The theme of my post season review of Stiller will be "I come to delist Cheynee, not to praise him". In the tradition of Mark Anthony I will attempt to have the mob rioting by the end of the write up. Not sure if I can get in a line “And Voss and Kerr are honourable men, they are all honourable men”. But will try.

Nothing but great admiration for the bloke.
Likewise, i am sad it ended like this, but playing 100 games for us is a great achievement for him.I wish him all the best.Going out as captain of the winning NEAFL side ,was a nice finish here I guess.

Comments on Stiller from the 2011-12 off season

Adrian Fletcher’s end of season review 2011:
“Cheynee is low maintenance. You know he’s going to get the job done. He’s brave, he’ll go back with the flight of the ball. He can play long minutes, which you have to do in defence. He came on and was a strong contributor to that defensive six consistently.”

Doddgey’s end of season review 2011:
Cheynee Stiller epitomises the role of a foot soldier, “one who performs necessary but basic, often mundane tasks”. Every side needs these toilers, those who go out and give their all and provide a solid contribution to the team. They rarely provide brilliance and often go unnoticed in performing their roles. It is easy to under estimate their value to a side.
Real Footy season preview:
Cheynee Stiller - journeyman utility who has a knack of getting a game under Michael Voss. If the kids stand up, he may find himself relegated to a back-up role as a flanker.”

knaf’s evaluation – Stiller started his career as an on-baller where he collected a reasonable number of possessions without really developing a hurt factor. Later in his career he became almost an old fashion run with half back flanker. He was neither a lock down defensive player or a rebounding attacking defender.

So Stiller entered the last year of a two year contract as a benchmark player. He had been a solid contributor over the previous two tough year for the Lions. Could he hold his place in the best 22 as the team improved? Or would he be overtaken by more naturally talented younger team mates? Stated another way – if Voss was to demonstrate development across the playing group Stiller would be under the pump at the end of the season to keep his place on the list.
Stiller’s strengths and weakness have long been discussed on Bigfooty.

Strenghts – solid skills; brave; great aerobic capacity with the ability to run out the full hundred minutes of a match; professional and dedicated, team orientated; prepared to follow the coach’s instructions and stick to the team plan.
Weaknesses – One-paced; not strong, particularly in the overhead marking contest; cautious in his decision making and still lacking that hurt factor coming off half back

2012
Stiller started the year in the best 22 and had a very solid match against Melbourne. (19 possessions , 10 marks, 4 tackles).

However after the wheels fell off against Carlton, Stiller was dropped (12 possessions). I could not bring myself to rewatch this game to analyse Stiller’s performance, but the memory of Betts and Garlett running riot are still etched in my memory. My assessment at the time “Played a shocker last week. His normally fragile self confidence seemed shattered.”

The game against Fremantle could have been Stiller’s 100th, but the selectors were in a mean mood. The changes for the Fremantle game In: Brown, Drummond, Longer, Raines, Harwood Out: Black, Hudson, Stiller, Bewick, McKeever. Drummond the most like for like replacement for Stiller as Harwood still being tried as manly at mid-fielder at this point.

So it was back to the NEAFL for Stiller. Where he obviously took the dropping on the chin. I wont go through each game in the seconds but Stiller was consistently amongst the best.

After 12 games paying his dues in the seconds his persistence was rewarded - Round 15 against Sydney in Stiller, Karnezis and Crisp for McGrath, Golby and Polec. Stiller in for Golby down back I guess, (Beams a late change for Black).

A hundred games up for Cheynee.

However the celebrations are bittersweet. The eventual grand finalists put our improvement into perspective. And then Maguire is injured. McKeever tries to hold down full back for a quarter and the game is lost. I didn’t think Stiller was our worst but 14 possessions and no tackles is not a great return.

The next game is against the Saints. Stiller again feels the wrath of the selectors, maybe they are concerned about his pace against the Saints small forwards. Yeo appears to be Stiller’s direct replacement which is a bit of an indication about the future for Stiller.

So back to the magoos for Cheynee. Again he is in the best just about every week. Then is named on the wing in the NEAFL side of the year. However it is a bit of an indication of Stiller the player that despite being consistently in the best for the seconds for most of the year he only polls two votes in the Grogan.

Stiller plays OK in the NEALF grand final and collects a premiership medallion. Next week he is named captain of a cut back side that contests the NEALF both conferences Grand Final. Again bittersweet for Cheynee – collects a premiership cup on the same day his delisting from the club is announced. (and the presenter gets his name wrong)

So it is the end for Cheynee – a late pick from the 2005 rookie draft which is a bit of good recruiting for the club.

So what is the last word on Cheynee’s career. A limited player who was lucky to pick up 100 games during a very bad period for the club? A player who looked a bit timid on the ground but never shirked the contest? A player absolutely determined to get the best out of himself? A team orientated professional? Perhaps there is a bit of all of these.
For me I am rapt to think that in the locker room for the next 100 years the names Shaun Hart and Cheynee Stiller will adorn the number 32 locker to honour two players who built the culture of our club

Thanks for everything Cheynee, from every true Lions supporter.

Good get for them if it happens. Won't transform their list but will lift its professionalism and maturity.

He's an upgrade on JMac IMO.

Definitely. Think he fits the mould of what they're trying to build there, even for depth.
