Our late Staffy Bear was good with our previous chooks. When Bear died we got a Staffy pup Jessie. Jessie is not chook friendly. One night in a storm a branch fell and knocked the gate open. We let Jessie outside early, then when we went out to feed the chooks it was a massacre, dead chooks everywhere and our 4yo at the time walked out the backdoor straight after me.... Tears.

Anyway, she loves chooks and asked us to get new ones. The gate is now double latched.... and a little deterrent to keep the dog away....

I'm not really into chickens.
But how did you go with a new puppy and how long was it after Bear passed ?(RIP Bear).
Some people wait ages before getting a new dog Or puppy.

I went to our local fish place and got a bag of off cuts skin, meaty bit and giving a bit of that to them twice a day...

I bought a bag of meat meal for the first time ever time recently to stop the cross breed pen eating eggs (which has mainly worked). Sussex don't seem to like eating the stuff though.

Didn't know there was a chickens thread.

We brought 3 chickens about a year ago for the kids to grow up with and get the eggs etc. Originally purchased a smallish pen (box to sleep in with about a 1mx1m area to be in during the day). Have since attached 2 additional open play areas for them to roam in if we keep them locked up (especially if we go away). Purchased a 20m long net fence that I have setup around the pen so they can be out during the day, they love the open space.

Originally were locking them up every night but got lazy and eventually stopped locking them up (we live in a suburban area). Did eventually lose a chicken to a fox in the middle of the night. We managed to scare it off before it got the others but had to bury the dead one. Another was attacked but fully recovered in a week or 2.

Eventually got another one, should have got 2 as it was attacked a little by the 2 original chickens, all get along fine now though.

Get 3 eggs a day but just recently one of them has been laying a rubbery egg that isn't fully formed. Anyone have an idea why this may be happening? We just feed them Golden Yolk feed and kitchen scraps.

If we go away, I feel a bit guilty and usually buy grass to put in their pen for them to eat (along with normal feed). Funny thing is I can be gone for 3 weeks and when i return I open the pen, within 10 mins they are back in the pen. Not the brightest animals haha

Similar story here. We live in downtown Maroubra, a stone's throw from the SCG, and we lost four chickens out of five in one night to foxes. Didn't hear a ******* thing. I just got up the next morning and found the yard full of feathers, four headless corpses and our buff orpington looking at me, completely unscathed. * knows how she survived.

We've since increased the flock back to five, but now I'm absolutely paranoid about locking them up at night.

Our flock: a buff orpington, a light sussex, a barnevelder, a french marans and a bantam ancona. Two are off the lay so we're averaging about two eggs per day.

My mum had a chicken and she loved it.

It used to follow her around the yard and was also best friends with her dog and they would play together.

Unfortunately one night a fox got it and Mum was devastated

Anyone recommend a grit or shell grit..

One of my girls eggs have a fragile shell, I free range them but obviously lacking calcium

I’ve dried out some eggshells and ground that up and putting a bit of that in some oats, but any reco on shell grit

I have been buying eggs from this op shop that are the biggest i've seen. Every egg has a double yolk and they are delicious. You can check out their website to see that the chickens are fed well and free range (happy). They can't sell to supermarkets because the eggs are too big.

These eggs cost $5 a dozen. Brilliant value.

Anyway if interested they sell them at helping hands 66 oakover road preston.
