The chief judge of WA’s District Court has called for an independent inquiry into the embarrassing collapse of the multimillion-dollar trial of two brothers alleged to have been harbouring scores of illegal workers at their northern suburbs tomato farm.

Lawyer Denis O’Haire, appearing for Minh Canh Le, listed a catalogue of Commonwealth failings — including losing evidence, deporting key witnesses and the non-disclosure of thousands of phone calls and texts — that he said meant the case was fatally flawed.
