Similar to the "Slayer - Rating their albums" thread, I've decided to do one for one of my favourite Melodic Death Metal bands from Finland - Children of Bodom.
1 - Hate Crew Deathroll - (Underrated Metal album and one of the best in the Melodic Death/Thrash Metal genre - Highly recommended and easily my favourite.) Highlights are Needled 24/7, Hate Crew Deathroll and Sixpounder.
2 - Are You Dead Yet? - (I'm not sure why this album gets bagged a bit by Australian metal fans, but I love it. Clearly their 2nd best album in my opinion). Highlights are Are You Dead Yet?, Living Dead Beat and Punch Me I Bleed.
3 - Follow the Reaper - (Very solid album. 1st album of there's that has Thrash Metal elements in their music). Highlights are Hate Me!, Bodom After Midnight and Everytime I Die.
4 - Hatebreeder - (Not one of my favourites from COB, however, still a solid album. Probably their last album of theres that's solely Melodic Death Metal). Highlights are Downfall, Silent Night, Bodom Night and Hatebreeder.
5 - Blooddrunk - (Not their best effort but still have some very good highlights on the album.) Highlights are Hellbounds On My Trail, Blooddrunk and Done With Everything, Die For Nothing.
6 - Something Wild - (Probably their only disappointing album, which is their debut mind you, the album could have been better though). Highlights are Lake Bodom.
Live Albums
Chaos Ridden Years.
This is where Children of Bodom shine as a band. Their live performances are legendary from what I hear and someday, I would love to see them live. Chaos Ridden Years is an highly recommended album and it showcases the band at it's most brutal best.
Compliation Albums.
Skeletons in the Closet.
Another area where they shine is making covers. Their cover album "Skeletons in the Closet" is well made and one of my favourite albums and is quite fun to listen to. Looking Back at My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival Cover) and ...Oops I Did It Again (Britney Spears Cover) is quite a pisser. But there are some serious covers on the album too that are well done and the highlights are Talk Dirty to Me (Poison Cover), Somebody Put Something in My Drink (The Ramones Cover) and Don't Stop At the Top (Scorpions Cover).
Genre Debate.
I am not sure whether to classify CoB as a Melodeath, Thrash, Power or a Speed Metal band, but that is the beauty of Children of Bodom. My opinion is that they're a Melodeath/Thrash Metal band, if I have to put them in a genre. Where they shine is in their live performances. Alexi Laiho has a great stage presence. However, they are one band that keeps on getter better with age and only has one poor album and that's Something Wild in my opinion.
I'm looking forward to their next album, which is due out later this year or early next year and when they come out to Australia, I'm sure I'll be going to their shows.
Band Members:
Alexi Laiho - Vocals
Roope Latvala - Rhythm Guitar
Henkka Seppala - Bass Guitar
Jane Wirman - Keyboards
Jaska Raatikainen - Drums
Country:
Finland.
