With each day I think it's getting closer to a 2018 game. We leave it too late and the preparations and attendance by Australians will suffer. Not that the Australian attendance is what they are after here. Still - need plenty of time to promote and prepare.

Yep as the big sticking point is the $4mil cost. They don't have to have everything ticked off until just before the 2017 draw is released so I don't think these things are the real issue. The CBA should be resolved after the 2017 draw is released and before the 2018 draw. I reckon if the players only get 23% instead of 25% of industry revenues the AFL will announce a 2018 game 2 weeks later.

I think the 2017 fixture release is our deadline for a 2017 game. If we don't have everything sorted it'll most likely be a 2018 game.

Those close to the negotiations between the many parties involved in the political, business and sport negotiations have told The Australian they believe the announcement could come as early as the AFL grand final. The venture has had the enthusiastic backing of the AFL Commission which has effectively guaranteed the match will go ahead.

Gold Coast have offered to play Port Adelaide in Shanghai as a home game, allowing Port to adhere to its stadium contract with Adelaide Oval.

The match is set to be played in late May at a stadium which is part of the Jiangwan Sports Centre in the Yangpu District of Shanghai. The keenest of AFL footy fans might remember it as the ground where Brisbane and Melbourne played an exhibition match in 2010.

At the time, the stadium had a capacity of 30,000 but it is now heritage-listed and will be restricted to around 15,000.

Late May??

Yes Travis Auld said there's a small window and it's late May. He said the fixture could be worked around it too for in the travelling for the 2 clubs etc. Will be interesting to see if the $NAFL are as accommodating.

People in this thread were saying it has to be Round 1.

We better get the Thursday night game the week before and the bye after.

Originally they thought around June July with the bye, then they thought first game of the season but the climatic conditions and ground prep suit May.

Didn't KT say on 5CC that it has to be early in the season because of the climate?

Late May they're starting to have high 20's to low 30's temp wise. The ground doesn't have lights so can't do a night game.

After this year from hell, just imagine if that game is the success we ultimately want it to be. The massive media exposure, the sponsorships, Port being the saviour of the Gold Coast Suns ;) (Shame about their colours though.) From the depths of despair, we come up smelling like roses despite the expected months of ridicule and destructive attempts of the media (in particular the SA based Ambassadors and a few Vic clubs.) It would be delicious :) I shall daydream about this :)

The AFL is about to deliver what looked at best wishful thinking and, at its glummest, the impossible. It has moved to the brink of giving its blessing to the first league game for premiership points in China.

Those close to the negotiations between the many parties involved in the political, business and sport negotiations have told The Australian they believe the announcement could come as early as the AFL grand final. The venture has had the enthusiastic backing of the AFL Commission which has effectively guaranteed the match will go ahead.

It is a major achievement by Port Adelaide who, under chief executive Keith Thomas and president David Koch, have driven the idea and the strategy behind it that is far more intricate than one game a year. When announced, the bold experiment had more critics than the end-of-season bye.

There is the matter of improving the ground surface up to the required standard for AFL football, in terms of playing as well as broadcasting. Initially it was thought grass would have to be flown in to improve the quality but it is believed grass can now be grown in-situ. Time is limited as the weather is cooling and will not warm up again until February.

The ground is 250 metres long. Obviously it will need to be shortened but the extra space allows the AFL to overlay the ground and the occasion with promotion, colour and goodwill.

“Right now, it’s a year-by-year proposition, but we would certainly consider this as an ongoing venture,” Suns chairman Tony Cochrane said. “I really rate David Koch and the job he’s done as Port’s chairman, so it’s a good fit.”

The Suns are seen as a good fit for Port because of the heavy investment by China in Gold Coast real estate.

Broadbent to gold coast confirmed.
