I have been hearing for 30 years that place X or place Y is the new Silicon Valley and will takeover from them. Silicon Valley hasn't been about manufacturing for 25 years or more. Globalization means the factories move offshore but the real brain power and creativity stays there.

Its about creativity. Its about software over hardware. The Valley attracts tens of thousands of technology specialists from all over the world every year. Silicon Valley attracts the best, brightest and most creative of Americans every year and hundreds of their university undergraduate and post graduate programs are linked in. Its that brain power and creativity that Shenzhen and other cities don't have and that they will not take over or be able to match for over 60 years, as basically that's how long ago Silicon Valley started with the Fairchild Semiconductor opened, with William Shockley having invented the transistor in the Bell Labs on the east coast just after the war, then led a team to invent a silicon semiconductor, basically the first silicon chip in San Jose.

The Chinese don't have the creativity and can't until their government takes off all their controls on the internet, facebook etc as well as personal controls over basic thinking different to the politburo. They might be good at writing software code to crack thru firewalls of international governments databases, there in Shenzhen and at Huawei labs there, but they have a long way to go to get close to those other cities trying to be Silicon Valley, let alone Silicon Valley itself.

Yes Cringley knows that the yanks wont be the world power they once were. He's a realist.

spot on

As you know I run businesses in Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Australia, US, India, UK and China. We work with wonderfully educated and experienced management and operating teams.

The technical skills in the developing nations is often HIGHER than Oz, UK and the US but the critical thinking, creativity and initiative needs generational change (or several generations of change).

Shenzhen is where 90% of the world's electronics are manufactured by companies like Foxconn. It's not a big stretch to suggest that the next stage is for those innovatative start ups to say "Let's move our headquarters to Shenzhen so we can be on top of the latest gadgets and innovations and incorporate them into our own designs".

I'm not saying that it will be Chinese companies that drive innovation, but rather International companies that see a benefit of doing business at the coalface of where the world's highest amount of patents are registered each year. Alibaba (Alipay) and Tencent (WeChat Wallet) had the equivalent of Apple Pay before Apple even came out with it. Innovations with VR? Shenzhen.

They can do this because tech in Shenzhen has an open source policy - it's all geared around creating something better, rather than the litigious company secrets model of the Valley.

They don't need to take controls off of thinking - they just need to attract the right people from outside and get them talking in RMB instead of USD. Which is exactly what they are planning to do.

What do you defines as electronics? Consumer electronics? If you look at consumer + industrial electronics its not even close to 90% and I have my doubts its even close to 90% for consumer electronics. And where are the majority of original patents for these electronics from? China? USA? Europe? Elsewhere?

Silicon Valley stopped making more silicon chips than Taiwan did in the early 1990's. Manufacturing is different to design, innovation R&D. Shenzen is about manufacturing. How many Americans, Europeans, Australians, Indians etc want to move to Shenzen compared to Silicon Valley or the US? It will be decades before that trend flips over and people from these areas are won over by the Chinese lifestyle and RMB over the US lifestyle and USD. All those multinationals can set up branches there to tap into activity but they wont be moving HQ and people there for a long time if ever. Shenzen will become more important over the years but they will lag behind Silicon Valley.

Now moving this to footy, this discussion on Shenzen shows why the Gold Coast are thick as pig s**t. As I have discussed with Lockhart Road a few times GC have had Huawei as their technology partner for several years, they signed a 5 year deal a few years ago and they are their home ball sponsor, so they should have gone to Huawei's Shenzen HQ and built up a closer and deeper relationship with Huawei and then piggybacked off that and dealt with the tech companies in Shenzen. The GC should have looked at doing clinics and footy development stuff there. There is plenty opportunities there for them. They should have said Port has Shanghai we will look at taking on Shenzen. But no they did bugger all with Huawei and Shenzen and only did a little bit of footy stuff in Chengdu the capital of Sichuan over 1,800 kms away from Shenzen. Lockhart Road reckons we should keep them away from Shenzen as the South China AFL which we now help run, is hoping to set up a footy team there.

Did we ever see Chinese TV ratings from our game in May?
Nope. The Chinese dont use black boxes like Oztam they still use the old fill in the book method. It took about 2 months to get the figures for the first live game last year, which IIRC was the Essendon Friday night game.

Are we still showing regular season games on CCTV?
Looks like the CCTV doco have finished and were only for 2016. See bottom of this page. 57 films were signed up to produce 25 doco's for 2016.

I'm not sure if we are still on CCTV5. Lockhart Road Port Woolwich do you guys in HK know? Do you have access to a CCTV5 TV guide.

The deal signed last year after the 2 games were broadcast in April ie Essendon and Geelong games was;

On the back of the initial success of Port Adelaide’s broadcast foray into China, CCTV and the AFL have entered a partnership to broadcast one game into the world’s most populous nation each week. One in three broadcast games will feature Port Adelaide and CCTV will also broadcast any finals in which the Power is a competitor.

The fact we had to sign a last minute deal to broadcast the Shanghai game live suggests in Shanghai and Guangzhou and across China live with out mention other stuff in 2017 suggest maybe not.

CCTV, the Shanghai Media Group and Guangzhou TV will bring the game to the Chinese population which, in combination with Australian broadcasts on Fox and Seven and international showings on the Watch AFL app, gives the game the potential to be the most-watched in the history of Australian Football.

Port Adelaide’s China Engagement Strategy worked with CCTV – China’s national broadcaster – and the AFL to beam matches across the world’s most populous nation in 2016.

Port Adelaide chief executive welcomed the announcement as a natural extension of the club's China Engagement Strategy.“This is a very welcome announcement and one that will put Port Adelaide firmly on the world stage,” Mr Thomas told portadelaidefc.com.au. “Since we engaged CCTV with the AFL last year, we have seen some fantastic viewing numbers and Sunday’s game certainly has the potential to be the most-watched game in the history of the code......

Thanks REH. I've still noticed the big Open To The World Banner on the hill. Hopefully that means we still are being Broadcast there, but perhaps not.

Saw Andrew Hunter walking down Grenfell Street with a young blonde around 45 minutes ago.
Hopefully going to close out some more China deals. :D

Lol that was probably Claire.

It's quite amusing really. The media and opposition club outrage, hysteria and negativity about us daring to play a game for Premiership points in China. Now everyone wants an overseas game
https://thewest.com.au/sport/afl/nic-nat-hopes-afl-spreads-wings-to-fiji-ng-s-1742735
As the AFL continues to look overseas in an attempt to grow the game, West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui hopes Fiji is not forgotten

well there was that st Kilda in NZ for two years before you went to China.

has there really though. or is that just how you folks are reading it. I havent noticed any particular "outrage".
You play on semantics by picking on the word "outrage" yet ignore all media and supporter diatribe, ridicule, antipathy, and the like. Carey, Lee Matthews, Ling, and the like, all publicly slamming the exercise. Social media hysterical meltdown, and all the deliberate negative press and "fake news" in the weeks beforehand downing the game. From fear of North Korean nuclear holocaust halting the game [Hello! Like that wouldnt halt games here too!] to lung-crushing pollution! [Even faked up with photo-shopped pics!]

Good Lord man, if you didnt see "the media and opposition club outrage, hysteria and negativity" as posted, then you have had your head up your bum for the last 6 weeks!

Fraid he's correct Wookie. The usual from the usual suspects here, and in Vic.

Probably not "outrage", not as strong as that, but certainly a strong anti-Ports feeling.

Of course Kochie didn't help with the jumper thing.

Thank you for being one of the many non-Port readers who continue to study this thread. It's been quiet lately but there should be some action soon, perhaps related to Team China coming Down Under next month for the 2017 AFL International Cup.
