Gil needs to get Stephen A. Smith to talk to these people who want to be in the marquees when the game is on.

I guess when we are on the end of a home pounding at least our fans are seated, but just reclining with arms folded.

So... We make money, Saints make money and the AFL gets a few bucks in as as well, in everywhere else that isn't here it would be deemed a success but no "lol-de-lol crowd numbers" :drunk:
How much is St Kilda really making? Lets say its net is $500k, $500k for the game + $200k new sponsors then less extra costs ie marketing the game over 6 months and upgrades on the standard flights and accommodation Port/AFL are paying for, but what would they have made if they played the game at Docklands?

Do they charge their fans 10/11ths a normal membership or still the same as if that game was played at Docklands? Does the AFL give their supporters a catch up game at an away game the Saints play at Docklands to make up for the missing home game? Does the AFL give them access to corporate, advertising, signage income they would have earned at their home game to the catch up away game??

Unless the AFL fully explain it, the opaqueness of the set up means the numbers Gil talks about are rubbery. Its like the AFL never admit they have made a mistake, or if they do, its a few years later so its hard not to be skeptical and cynical when they don't explain the whole financial picture. Koch's $500k profit figure is also rubbery.

The AFL and Port should have the guts to say this costs us $nil financially as we are in a JV and we raise sponsorship to cover match costs, anything we pay up front gets reimbursed out of this pool of these funds because Mr Gui underwrites it to be break even, provided we raise a minimum of sponsorship $$$. And both AFL and Port say these sponsorship $$$ we raise for the game wouldn't be there if we didn't play the game as its part of those organisations' marketing budget for their Chinese based activities. But they dont have the guts to say this publicly. Why? I have no idea.

I'm not against the game, I'm against the s**t house job the AFL and Port do explaining the set up of how it works to simple minded public and media. Sure its complicated and there are commercial in confidence deals signed but the big picture and the little picture can be explained a whole lot better than it has been.

You seriously underestimate the impact of PR in the real world. You've already witnessed the mouthbreathers out in force ready to attack the venture at the slightest opportunity, why give them any ammunition?

You seriously underestimate how bad the PR is around this game at the moment. Its not going to get worse by explaining the hows and whys.

Great leaders can explain things clearly and succinctly to people even if they have to explain it over and over again. Treat people like idiots and they will respond like wise back. Gil and Koch aren't great leaders.

Would still like to see more photos published that empathise the crowd. We hear about packed
Hospitality tents etc but we don’t see them.
It might help to stop some of the anti-China rhetoric if people could actually see it!!

Serious promotional failure from the PAFC.

The media should have been flooded with pics of every aspect of Shanghai.

It continues the failure to have OAK on screen in the coach's box during games and broadly Shanghai before and after.

Golden opportunities gone begging.

PAFC management have seriously dropped the ball but hey, trust us, play on.

Concur.

Been said before.

The Club must upgrade from ‘Media Department’ to a Communications Division run by a broad-minded experienced internationalist in a higher position than just a GM to compliment and broadcast its offshore marketing mindset, its achievements such as they are, and its growing ambitions.

But no, we persist with a ludicrously undermanned (three names) old-fashioned media team and wonder at the promo opportunities that are left begging and/or not even recognised.

Our chairman is allowed minus or in spite of protest to carry on with his Li’l Ole Blue Collar Swamp Rats Done Good pantomime ... so what should we expect from the rest of the organisation that reports to him?

I think I heard we have one of the leanest media departments in the AFL whilst the Crows have the biggest.

The majority out there base it on superficial factors like the "hurr durr the crowd looks empty" or delayed flights or players getting sick etc. They aren't going to bother analyse accounting results which are already highly subjective any deeper than the likes of Robbo or Ralph telling them it's in the red, take into account any growth or recognise the significance the game has in a tetchy political climate. At the moment one of the few things that does get acknowledged by those who will not see, is that the game is financially worthwhile for Port and the Saints, I don't think we or the AFL need to come out at this stage and add fuel to the fire.

Caro needs to do some digging around exactly just how much China is costing PAFC. And I don't mean just in terms of dollars. Whilst the whole administration is focused on 1 game, the rest of the business is falling apart.
