Re: F**k China

There was something about this on Nightline a while ago which was similar to the following:

Even worse is in store for the animals of Xiongsen Bear and Tiger Mountain Village near Guilin in south-east China.

Here, live cows are fed to tigers to amuse cheering crowds. During a recent visit, I watched in horror as a young cow was stalked and caught. Its screams and cries filled the air as it struggled to escape.

This sentence is going to sound insanely stupid, but one of the reasons more people don't know about this is because of ignorance.

People don't want to know about these things.

The saddest thing is that there's animal abuse elsewhere in China that makes the above seem insignificant.

It's not stupid at all. Sadly, ignorance is one of the main reasons why cruelty continues to be so. The same thing can apply for all kinds of animal cruelty that a thing isn't done about it because either not enough people know or they don't want to know, hence the care factor is minimal. Battery hens, inhumane animal traps, pointless testing (especially cosmetics), breeding neglect, etc. China might have a horrid record in regards to animal welfare, but take a look at our backyard - and we're not so flash either. For a country that not only prides itself on the humane treatment of all animals, and finds cruelty morally unacceptable - we're doing a pretty lousy job.

To brush up on your point though, such things happen everyday with people feeding small animals to lizards, live. A lot of the times purely for their amusement rather than to sustain their pets... besides, pre-killed or dead meat is better. The prey animal doesn't suffer unduly and the actual pet isn't attacked/bitten/scratched/killed.

A lot of the time people don't need to feed live - not only is it immoral (in my view anyway), but it's illegal here anyway (unless it is absolutely necessary).

Your post actually reminds me of this thread in the Society board - and I think it's the perfect example of how some cruelties are not further prevented due to ignorance or indifference. The OP there really hits home on how some people can be incredibly cold and callous towards animals with the capacity to suffer.

It's a shame really. No animal deserves torture, and if it needs to be killed, it shouldn't be slow and painful. :(

I also recall reading an article in the newspapaper a few months back about dogs being taken from their owners whilst out walking, with the dogs then being beaten to death. I think it was due to some type of disease being spread, surely it could have all been done in a more humane manner though.

Yes, it seems that when the word "disease" is involved, all moral consideration suddenly vanishes which I find absurd. Next those sort of people will be saying "oh but they're only <insert animal here>, who cares" to justify something that is obviously wrong.

Point is, if an animal feels pain - it should not be subjected to prolonged suffering. Not necessary at all. In fact, I don't know why people would defend the use of inhumane means when the humane and quick option is there to be used.
