It is hard not to conclude that at this point it is too late, we have already welcomed this technology in to our lives with open arms, it is all around us, and its use to control and monitor our lives will only become increasingly insidious. Anyone that thinks it can't get worse should think again.

It's better than pumping kids full of addictive pych drugs. Drugs that take decades off thier life's. Cause many diseases and damage the repuductive system.

I wonder why nobody talks about that?

It can definitely get worse - we only have private companies to worry about passively collecting data at the moment. Even governments passively collecting is one thing, but active government intervention? I really doubt we'll be seeing similar things in the west to what China is doing. The article in the OP is one small aspect of how they are looking to control their population - I can't remember the specifics of what it's called but there are cities in China running the trials of tech monitoring and scoring of citizens that affects their ability to access services. It's Black Mirror sort of stuff.

I remember laughing at anti-google sentiment from "tin foil hatters" over 10 years ago. Now in 2018, my android smartphone knows me better than I know myself. Fingers crossed that Alphabet Inc don't go all Chinese Government on us.

Just when you thought this couldn't get worse, there's this

Chinese schools enforce 'smart uniforms' with GPS tracking system to monitor students

Chinese schools have begun enforcing "smart uniforms" embedded with computer chips to monitor student movements and prevent them from skipping classes.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12...l-uniforms-monitor-students-in-china/10671604

Premature etrackulation, The technology doesn't work. Someone please tell me how.

If you think it's a problem you'd better hope there are functionally literate people out there who agree with you.

On a another forum there was this poster who was critical of the Chinese and a thier apparant social control. But when they become a moderator they used bullying and thier powers against posters who's opinion did not suit thier ideology.

With them being white and critical of Asians for doing the same thing they did. You would have to call them racist.

We could certainly be heading in that direction. Home Affairs are working towards a biometric facial recognition software. It's supposedly intended for criminal activities, but really who knows how far they'll use it. Really, it's the foundation for a surveillance state with social credit controls.

Um this is about china. I doubt it would ever happen in western democracies during peace time.

You could argue the invention of the camera was equally a foundation. There has been nothing implemented in the west to suggest we will grant peoples access to services based on social and community concepts. We base access solely on income, family status and now immunisation.

Lol people in the West have been voluntarily giving up their privacy for quite a while now.

Sally I think most people just don't care.
Piece by peace not enough for people to really care to notice!

I hear from Sinophiles China will be a more benign presence in world affairs than the US, so what are you people worried about?
That's because they are historically insular. I mean, how China was 1500 years ago is still relevant as they continue to invade areas and influence global politics, right?

That's because they are historically insular.

The have territorial disputes with almost every one of their neighbours and are claiming ocean territories that are nowhere near them. They may have been insular in the 50s but they are aggressive expansionists today.

But ultimatley it doesn't matter what country we talk about; any nation run by humans is going to be expansionist given the means. The reason why China is so dangerous is because it's institutions are designed in a way where they not accountable.

Im as left wing as anyone, but we shouldnt delude ourselves about China bring benign simply because over guilt that the US has done some nasty s**t over the years which we have benefited from.

No, you wouldn't... it has nothing to do with race. If it's gotten to the point where every time a person who happens to be white (you assume) criticizes a culture which isn't is deemed to be racist, then it's you who has the problem... and this is a reason racism as a term and an argument is becoming obsolete. It is incorrect, and often used incorrectly. You're saying this person is making this attack on Chinese policy simply because they're Chinese, and not because they disagree with what the Chinese are doing.
It is you who is making the ad hominem argument. Effectively, most of the time when racism is used as an attack, it amounts to ad hominem, and that situation has come about by overuse and abuse of the term.

But it isn't hard to get bogged down in this line of thought. It isn't hard to understand it. And it isn't hard to see the parallels and similarities between Chinese social control methods and Western ones.
The difference is in the Western ability and propensity to argue against it, and to prevent it as much as possible. We're way ahead in that regard, and that's largely the result of Western philosophy, not Eastern.

Sisyphus was not an Asian.

Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone

The former head of pbs was asked why don't they run stories on the true nature of pychiatric drugs. The response was that those companies spend millions on advertising. If they were to run these stories, that advertising would be pulled and moved to thier rival.

This is the sort of social control we should be debating. Once we have fixed problems like this, then we can be critical of others. On that same site when posters spoke about issues surrounding these drugs they encountered bullying and censorship from senior staff of that site.

On another site some posters had a rational argument against gay marriage. But because of the possibility of Google ads punishing that forum, these posters were bullied and sane rational debate deleted.

There's no opposition to absolute power in China anymore. It's been eliminated. The comparison to the US is a joke. The US has the House of Reps, the Senate and a President voted for every 4 years. China has none of that. It is in fact a rogue state.
