Choco on 5AA

Just heard Choco on 5AA talking about delistings. Got the following impressions

Koula survived because he is still under contract, altho Mark did concede his last 5 or so games with West (Bs) were good and that if fit he could make the side.

We will go with a short list next year because of salary cap pressures. This impacted on Alan Murray and Bassett (altho he also pointed out Bassett had been at the club for 6 years and hadn't made an impact, so maybe he needed a different environment).

McKenzie missed out because he broke his arm in the last minor round game - that would mean substantial rehab time for a "skinny player" who probably needed maximum time in the gym to build up. Again a short list made carrying an injured player a luxury.

Barham was unlucky because he couldn't get a league game with Centrals despite kicking 70 goals for the year in the 2s. Apparently the whole Barham family was frustrated by this, and Port couldn't take a punt based only on reserves form. So he will nominate for the National Draft again.

He said Wanganeen wasn't eligible for the veterans list because he wasn't old enough  I thought the age limit for Port was 28 and Wangas is 30 next year. Anyone know for sure?

He was very pleased to have Brett Ebert on the list, and not just for "symbolic purposes" as Cornes tried to suggest.

That's it off the top of my head.

The veterans list capacity was 28, but it might have been changed to fall in line with other clubs.

This makes some interesting reading, this is from the AFLPA website:

Collective Bargaining Agreement 1998-2003

Part D - General Matters

26. Veterans List

26.1

a) An AFL Club may nominate for each AFL Season up to two eligible Players to be transferred from its Primary List to the Veterans List or to be classified as a veteran on its Primary List, provided the transfer or classification occurs by 31 January in the relevant AFL Season.

b) An AFL Club who classifies a Player on its Primary List as a veteran, may, at a later stage, but no later than 31 January in the relevant AFL Season, transfer the Player to the AFL Club’s Veterans List. A Player who is transferred to the AFL Club’s Veterans List cannot be transferred back to the Primary List of the AFL Club.

26.2 A Player is eligible for inclusion on an AFL Club’s Veterans List or to be classified as a veteran, if:

a) the Player has been at the AFL Club on the Primary List for at least ten (10) years; and

b) the Player is 30 years of age or older.

Provided that in the case of Adelaide and Fremantle, a Player will be eligible if he:

is 30 years of age or older; and
has been on the AFL Club’s Primary List since inception of the AFL Club into the AFL Competition.

And in the case of Port Adelaide, a Player will be eligible if he:

is 28 years of age or older; and
has been on the AFL Club’s Primary List since the inception of the AFL Club into the AFL Competition.

Once an AFL Club to which these exceptions apply has been in the AFL Competition for 10 years, the exception will cease to apply to that AFL Club and thereafter the provisions of sub-clauses 26.2(a) and (b) will apply.

26.3 Once a Player has been included on the Veterans List of an AFL Club, the Player’s name shall remain on that list until the Player leaves that AFL Club.

26.4 The Veterans List of an AFL Club must be finalised by that AFL Club by 31 January in the relevant AFL season.

So if this is all correct why can Wanganeen not be added?

Hmm, no idea.

Of course, you'll note he doesn't need to be elevated until January. This may just be a cunning lie for contract negotiations.

Re: Koula
He is definitely incredibly lucky considering all factors, but the contract excuse is really incredibly thin. I know he will do well next year and all, but seriously? There's more going on. There has to be. Or he would've gone.

Re: Barham
He should've been kept on the rookie list for another year. He's done fantastically well and been consistent, and it's not like he's just taking up space on the senior list.

Re: Bassett
Unlucky indeed, there were a few who probably should have gone before him.

It could be a cunning lie for contract negotiations but I would think that the Player Managers would see straight through this, they would know if Wanganeen could be added or not to add some more room.

Yeah, true. I have no idea what they're playing at.

The Gavin Wanganeen Veteran Issue came up as a topic with KG and Graham towards the end of the show and they said they would look into it tomorrow.

I emailed them after the show with the link to the AFLPA website that states what I have written above so hopefully they will be able to clarify it once and for all.

I don't know if I will be here to listen to the show tomorrow so if someone is listening and they speak about it could they post what the response is?

Or perhaps Choco hasn't read the rule book properly! Someone got his email address perhaps we could update him.

The Ken Cunningham and Graham Cornes Sports Show that is on 5AA from 4pm.

Surely you must have heard of them?

Sure I've heard of them. I just could never stand the idea of listening to them prattle on denigrating Port and praising the Cows. Anyway it doesn't really matter because I don't leave work till 5:00.

Shouldn't we have had him moved to another club if this indeed was the case. If it was good enough to move PAxman mid-year to North why could we have moved Barham as well? If they had have done that then their would be no need to take a "punt" of reserves form only, why didn't anyone at the club think of this earlier.

I'm starting to get the opinion that Choco thinks the SA football public can't think for themselves and takes what the advertiser/5AA say as law. A couple of the statements he made (if FF has quoted him correctly) seem to be a little off the mark with regard to certain issues. Does anyone here feel the same? Or do you just think he is trotting out the party line even though he knows certain things to be different and doesn't really care what those in the media think. For what it's worth KG & Cornes probably wouldn't have half the knowledge a few of the people on here have, which is a shame, you can thrown in Rucci with the other two for good measure.

Once a player goes on the veterans list he can't be removed.
It stands to reason that you would want the highest paid players on there for as long as possible.
When does Primus qualify?
Can a player be put on the veterans list part way through the year?
Our two most valuable players would have to be Primus and Tredrea.

Did "choco" offer any advise to other teams on how to choke in Finals?:D
Considering it'd only be Crows fans listening, I guess he figured they already had it pretty much down themselves.

Rucci & 5AA clan are about as believable as Jonny Howard ... but then again a majority voted him in ... it's scarey how many people out their struggle to utilise their own brain & make up their mind for themselves ... rather than follow like sheep. We're not in New Zealand for god sake! [End, Kane's preaching on the red wine for tonight]

That's what i think may be the underlying factor. Why put someone on there just for the sake of putting them on there, it will only mean that the list is less flexible in the future. Something could happen like it did to NM & Mick Martyn which was rather an unsavoury event. Better leaving it bear until Matty would would be eligible to be put on there as at the 12th jan 2003. Cut off is a player (for Port) must be 28 on the 31st Jan 2002 if i read what Scott posted correctly.

I listen to it when i can, when i know that something involving Port will be on the program, so i heard choco's comments and he was dead serious about koula, so koula would know that the only reason why he's still on our list is because he's still on contract and choco said that we had some salary problems, so that saved him in the end.

Why can't the club one day, do their own club radio show, because cow5AA is really biased sometimes and they are both cow supporters so it gets really annoying, i'll be the host of the power radio show, it wouldn't have to be every day, don't clubs do it on sports 927 or something in melbourne???

KG and Cornes are funny. I wish they still did webcasting at 5AA

diddums ... if you don't like the know-it-all duo, turn it over to the teenie-weenies, or whatever takes your fancy. You need to remember that commercial networks will cater for the majority to ensure ratings. ;)

Maybe Koula has been singled out for this year's "Choco's annual kick up the date!"

Past "winner's"
2000- Che ****atoo-Collins
2001- Jared Poulton

We all know what good years those two had the following year, i've already told everyone to jump on board the Koula bandwagon, i think this will help it gain momentum!

Obvious question - does that mean Poulton's 2003 season be as bad as CCC's 2002?

Perhaps getting Ebert & Dittmar to host one day a week would be good for ratings, atleast the reporting would be a little more accurate and the delivery would have to improve about 100%.

Realistcally though both clubs get pretty even air-time it is just that we think that KG & Cornes are a little biased towards the cows, possibly because they are.
