I wonder if Hawthorn FC will cop it on the chin ..or appeal? Is there grounds to appeal?..or is it better to move on and concentrate on Adelaide this week.
In the interests of both Brian Lake & a just & fair result I would have thought it to be incumbent upon the club to appeal on his behalf!....

Apologies for the intrusion...
Even as a North fan, I have to offer my sympathies, as I have alternated between bemusement and outrage at the disgraceful way the wrestle between Lake and Petrie has been reported. Ralph, Slobbo, Larkins and the other media parasites have been all over this like seagulls over a chip. Barrett even stated definitively the ridiculous notion that Petrie had stopped breathing (which amazingly didn't stop him flailing his arms about). FWIW, 4 weeks seems a ridiculous penalty given Petrie was unhurt. All decent footy loving fans must share your annoyance and frustration at the extent to which AFL decision making appears beholden to the flubbering of a few media windbags.

Well they rely on the medical report as regards the impact and the video evidence in general both of which in this case showed that Brian did nothing much. And yet, 4 weeks.... go figure
Come on now. Scott said he could not breath and could not see. He said something else but cannot recall.

Amazing to think that Maffew LLoyd. a former player famous for one of the biggest 'DOG' acts of all time..on Brad Sewell...not forgettin Josh Thurgood using a so called protective armguard would call it a bad look for football....Im sure your wife is proud of you loser....This club and its supporters must be realistic and see the media & AFL (one in the same) for its complete disdain for THE MIGHTY HAWKS...Buddy the Hawk...Undisciplined, inconsistent, too inaccurate...to Buddy the Swan...he can't do wrong...yes he frustrated us all....but he was a superstar 4 the Hawks even when he was all of the above and he gave us a 'X' factor money can't buy....so how did the media react..not sure they did.....Even this season with all our injuries we have got over the line with some new depth & the Hawthorn way....THE HARD WAY....yet with a ridiculous run home....Crows..Swans...Cats...Dockers...Pies again, and knowing that the Hawks defence for literally 3 yrs have struggled against the really big forwards..who will stand Walker, Franklin/Tippett, Hawkins, Pavlich....well it won't be Brian Lake. See why the media circus has engulfed an incident that literally had 1 yes 1 camera angle.....declaring that Lake should be basically hung.....the bias against Hawthorn is so evident its spew worthy....and how many times do we need to hear 'HAWTHORN LOST THE PLOT'...we go along getting the job done without seeking kudos or fanfare and they look for sensationalism....Oh Andrew Embley.. lucky you were not a Hawks player when you dropped your knee into Ben Stratton's back last season....you would have been forced to retire immediately...but you just got a week....

It's a conspiracy!
Lake only got 4 weeks because the Hawks play melbourne in week 4 !!!!!

lol.

Let's face it. It doesn't matter which team it is, or player.

If you weigh 100kg and have a 100kg guy holding your throat you are in deep shit.
It is bloody dangerous.

I thought 2 weeks. But no one can defend that crap.
I would have copped the two weeks no problems. The only way i would have copped the 4 is if petrie left the ground and didn't play out the rest of the game.

Aaaah, what a pleasant change. A North Melbourne supporter who is realistic and honest. There are after all, some sensible, decent people out there still. Cheers for the thoughts and good luck for the rest of the season. ;)

For somebody who was "almost choked to death," if you look closely at around the 49 second mark of the video when the pack forms, Petrie is doing a fine job of, what it looks like, trying to scratch Lake's eye out.

What a bunch of crap - his face is shredded for everyone to see - Petrie's fingers were clawing at his face and Petrie played the whole game and is not injured in any way shape or form. Seriously another player could break someone else's jaw and get a lesser penalty

what a joke

I'm still in shock that the Hawthorn QC (a QC for crying out loud!) didn't call Petrie for witness testimony.
The AFL Counsel also gave our QC a beautiful out clause that wasn't taken advantage of - he put it to Lake that Petrie was crying out in pain. I would have conceded that he was; and then used that as prima facie evidence that Lake couldn't have been asphyxiating Petrie as crying out would have been physically impossible for him in that instance.

Looks like he has gone 12 rounds. What a sad picture.
He got 4 weeks and looks like the one that's had the crap punched out of his face. A few weeks ago they were saying that Petrie should retire....I hope for the footy gods to reveal themselves with aplomb in due course...

Is this the same Scott who said the below qoutes after an incident last year against v Collingwood after Buckley made a public comment.

"Bucks should just keep his opinions to himself when it comes to decisions and things that will be taken care of by the powers that be.

"It doesn't help when a senior coach comes in and starts influencing things and casting dispersions (sic) on our players.

"If Bucks wants to call me he can.''

The Rules Committee: New rule 101 - It is permitted to eye gouge on the football field if in the following circumstances:
• In provocation
• In retaliation
• If your a North Melbourne player in all instances (Unless your coach doesn't agree)
• If you wear any form of red and white on your guernsey if you are within the top 4 on the AFL ladder
(Clause) If your name is in any form of the two words Brian Lake you will go straight to the tribunal for a penalty with a nominal loading applied

Unfortunately this won't be appealed.

That would mean that Petrie would have to give evidence - I dare say if he was put into that situation he would probably have to tell the truth. I think you might find that Brian and Drew had a chat - Drew said that he would say "my breathing was not affected" provided lake didn't appeal the sentence and didn't bring up the eye gouge as a reason for it occurring. Neither player wants to be known for either act - but Lake was clearly in the wrong for keeping on going with it.

He would have been better off if he just belted him and then claimed provocation, but the "choke" was an act to low and would never get past the court of Slobbo's, sorry public opinion.

If the Loch didn't choke Petrie you can be sure that there would be an appeal - who wants to be known for an act like that?

I said on Saturday night that Petrie went Lake's eys first and Lake reacted. Sadly for you all you have finally seen what the media will do to forcibly sway public perceptions and create expectations of punishment before hearing any side of a story. I sympathise with you and Lake, but thankfully for you it is one player and a few days. Try your entire team for a year and a half. Anyway I think they got it wrong, but welcome to our world! :(

I would like to club to appeal simply as a show that they're sick of getting the raw deal. The appeal won't be overturned because the media are running the MRP/Tribunal/Appeals board, but for once I'd just like to see the club come out and say something instead of copping it, going behind closed doors to the AFL and rightfully expressing their disgust, and then copping it again; rinse and repeat.

I could take the 4 weeks if Petrie got similar punishment, but for scratching at a guy's eye leaving a cut just below the eye and getting off for it doesn't comprehend with what Lake's punishment or lack there of was.

To quote Ray Tango:... this whole thing... ******* sucks! I mean, this is the biggest pile of shit I've ever...

Trial by media and the anti-Hawks bias is still as strong as ever, still jealous of our success. Some of the comments on SEN really were a disgrace and Brian has a fair case for defamation I would have thought, enough is enough.
