Week 1 Mega Update:

Geelong Links & Players

Ablett:
Talks have remained positive, Geelong 2018 1st for GC 2018 2nd + Ablett was last GC offer. Deepest Sympathies with the Ablett family during a terrible time.

Motlop: Signs 4 year RFA deal at Port Adelaide, reports range from 500k-600k on deal. Offer likely closer to 4 netting band 3 compensation, Pick 34 at this stage, although some remain hopeful of a slim chance of recieving Pick 19 as compensation.

Sam Lloyd: Multiple sources report he will now be remaining at Richmond despite Geelongs Interest.

Watts: Multiples sources Jack Watts has selected Port Adelaide as his preferred club. Geelong consided this week it would have been unlikely to get a deal done for Jack regardless of his choice.

Stringer: Management & Player have both conceded deal may be difficult to complete, from the get to WBD did declare that if a suitable deal for the forward could not be reached they would retain him. This was stated on day 1. Seems unlikely now with other clubs not willing to help Essendon get the deal done.

Lang: Reported that we are in the final stage of negotiations with North on trading Darcy. Best we can hope for may be a pick upgrade. North currently have selections 22 & 44 in the draft.

Menzel: Club and player are happy for him to explore his options, manager stated he's chasing a multi year deal and Geelong offered one, Club has stated there is a guaranteed contract for him here should he choose it. Limited interest from other clubs. Looking like potentially staying now.

Ruggles: Currently out of contract. Preference to stay in Geelong. May receive contract offer after trade period.

Completed Trades & Ratings

Lever:

Melbourne Receive: Lever, Pick 35, 2018 3rd.
Adelaide Receive: Pick 10, Future 1st, 2018 4th.
Melbourne get their man, looks to have a bright future but I still think they may have paid more than they needed to. But if you look at trades like Burgoyne to Hawks when similar calls were made, it was well worth it. I still think we effectively paid less than Melbourne have here to attain both Dangerfield and 2E but I still think Dee's fans should be hopeful, they've been stockpiling young talent for a while and value draft picks less than other clubs may right now due to their list profile, they cant be in building mode forever. Adelaide got what they wanted in 2 first rounders so the feeder fans will be thrilled. Talk of a few SA boys in the top end of next years draft so the crows would love one to fall in the range of this newly acquired pick.

Smith:
Essendon Receive: Smith, Pick 24, 2018 2nd.
GWS Receive: Pick 11, 2018 3rd.
Essendon amazingly get a trade done early, and I believe come out on top, Smith was crying out for midfield minutes and its an area where Essendon are lacking, being able to pick upgrade next year gives them the slight edge. GWS will be happy to be back in the first round after having this years pick stripped from them due to the Whitfield saga. Lingering concerns over a degenerative knee condition with smith seem to not concern Essendon at all. He was quoted that any talk of him coming to Geelong was a fairy tale, for all those of you with a hot tip earlier in trade period.

Impey:
Hawks Receive: Impey, Pick 67
Port Receive: Pick 33, Pick 61
Not a huge wrap for Impey, but seems to fulfil a need for Hawthorn, looking like a Hartung upgrade. Fringe player in and out of the side at times, Port did well to pry a second round pick for him in my opinion. Clarkson has helped players find their role previously to great effect, but that halo has been damaged recently by Ty Vickery.

Crozier:
WBD Receive: Crozier, 2018 4th.
Freo Receive: Pick 40, Pick 82.
Quite like this for the Dogs, although they seem to be a team of half forward flankers as it is. Rate crozier more highly than Impey and dogs have paid less here. Freo have been pretty quiet this period, may be looking to package pick 40 up for some moves late in the piece.
