No, I didn't take him to the bloody hospital. Now, tell me this, right? Why would I shoot a bloke... bang... and then put him in the bloody car and whizz him off to the hospital at 100 miles an hour? It defeats the purpose of having shot him in the first place. What's more, it's bloody insulting... it's bloody insulting. Feel sad about this, and I don't like the people dancing on his grave.

First things first he's not a hero, and yes he spent a fair proportion of his life doing pretty despicable things to equally despicable people.

However, he was also a very funny man and legitimately a very good author. Pulp faction, which was one of his later, fictionalised books is a gripping read which IMO will age very well. His books are great reading not just because they are sickeningly violent, he's just a natural author- knows how to tell a story and wrote clear, direct, and often extremely funny prose. I really like how you can pick up some of those books and the dialogue is a snapshot of a lost Melbourne from 20 or 30 years ago.

He also seemed to more or less get his life together once he started writing and did something genuinely selfless and honest by turning down the transplant.

So,I guess in one sense he's someone who 25 years ago could have died having done absolutely nothing of value with his life, but as of now he's done a bit.

I don't think anyone idolises him. It's more that "normal" people are fascinated by what goes on in the underworld.

The collective obsession that the media has with crime figures is rather astounding.. I don't understand how Read has managed so much notoriety over the years -

I guess it goes into the same basket as the rubbish 'Underbelly' shows being so popular, and the tabloid newspapers who put the latest bikie war/shootings on the front page paper whenever something happens, which I think is stupid because there would be no bigger ego stroke for those blokes than to see their mugs on the front page of the paper...

People like crime stories. From Jack the Ripper, to westerns, to CSI. That is all. Some of the most highly rated shows recently include The Wire, Oz, Sopranos, The Shield, Breaking Bad etc. All shows that revolved around crime.
