...this hard man, this lauded representative of a counter culture was, for ten years, a police informant. A dog. A lagger. The lowest of the low. A give up.

Yeah. One of the worst things in the criminal world (and in many other aspects of society) is being a grass. A lagger. A snitch.

Then again, whistleblowers in society are loved by some, demonised by others. Perception is key, and it's a funny thing to boot.

His relationships with compliant coppers merely extended his criminality. Let us not forget that the last Royal Commission into corruption within our police occured in 1934.

Haha, now I can't help imagine you as this guy:

The man was despised by other Melbourne criminals. Not because he was successful with the books he had other clowns write on his behalf. Nor so much that he chose as his victims of extortion those who would never go to the cops, because they were as bent as him (though this was bad enough). No, it was because this hard man, this lauded representative of a counter culture was, for ten years, a police informant. A dog. A lagger. The lowest of the low. A give up.

Yeah he was an informant. But if you look at some of the deadset scum (Keith Faure... wait, am I even allowed to print that name?) that hated him, and what he endured in H Division, you've got to admit the odds of him not being a recidivist were pretty low. Its a good story, and an indictment on our social system that a guy like Chop even ended up in prison in the first place.

And sticking up/extorting drug dealers is part of the game. If you sell drugs its just accepted as an occupational hazard that there are guys who make their living targetting dealers. Happens all the time, either from bent cops or standover men. That's their job. Just like a dealer's is selling drugs.

Image is blocked here, but I assume its of Omar Little? It damn well better be! haha.

Definitely still happens anyway - a neighbour of mine had some plants in his basement, got tied up, bashed and robbed. Neighbours saw him trying to hop out of the house (feet and hands were bound) so they called the cops, cops then found what was left of his operation.

So lost his entire operation to some robbers, got bashed, then got convicted for stealing electricity and running a growhouse.

So yeah, it definitely happens. Can't imagine guys who do it for a living are too popular in jail - but then, Chopper didn't seem to phased by it.
