I'm just glad that currently, if there is a way back to the AFL for JA (and by rights there should be) it's not through Dawes. Dawes is keeping his spot, playing well, improving our forward line structure and there is no easy answer there for MM in dropping him. :thumbsu:

As impressive as Dawes was, I don't get the Rocca comparisons, or talk of him being a Jonathan Brown type. His contested marks were mostly where he was either holding the defender off with one hand, or pushed them away completely. I have yet to see him take a strong mark overhead where he has a defender right on him bashing his arms (he often drops them without that pressure), or for that matter come anywhere near taking a pack mark, which the likes of Rocca and Brown take in their sleep.

Basically his marking style to me seems identical to Cloke, but atm Cloke's hands are better.

#28.

Was considered a reach at that pick. Burgatron had him going to us at #63, which ended up being Tyson Goldsack in reality.

I can see the physical comparison and the kicking action. I agree he has a way to before he's anywhere near Rocca in presence or output.
I really thought today was a good progression from last season and last year though.
Only his second game for the year, so I'm not expecting world dominance just yet.

I am wondering if it was Anthony or Sav (maybe both?) that really struggled to use their size and muscle early on in their careers. I thought Dermie and Molloy (sp?) helped them out alot with that....

I thought Dawes used his strength really well at times and given his age he should only continue to improve in that area as he gets more confidence and experience.

The best part is that he's finally figured out he's built like the freaking Hulk, and uses it to his advantage. Seeing two Calrton players struggling to tackle him and unable to take him off his feet was a joy to watch.

Sav can't have struggled too much with using his strength early on. He kicked 151 goals in the 50 games he played before Brereton came to the club in 1995, including 73 as a 19-year-old in 1993.

When he just pushed White to the ground, took the mark and slotted the goal from close to the boundary was great too.

Never been a fan of Dawes, but he seems like he might be starting to show something.

As the OX said, there's a little bit of Anthony Rocca in him by the looks of it. Size, moves in a similar fashion, and even has a similar kicking style.

Really good signs again. He really presented hard and well. Still has a way to go but was our best foward today.

As mentioned he is a "confidence" player and he has had a really good first couple of games into the senior side in terms of the game style. Lots more space then is generally seen in modern football and our delivery has been very good. It should hold him in good stead. His marking will still need to get better, people aren't harping on his weaknesses for no reason he is going to get more attention, less space and better defenders and he won't be able to take them on the chest as often.

With that said his over head marking whilst still not convincing looks to be slowly on the improve. He is getting a decent bite on most attempts and just needs to start getting them to stick.

Before doing his knee was the #1 contested mark in TAC. Was rated as a pack busting, contested mark machine. Might just be one of those guys who takes a while to settle in to each step up the ladder.
Or he might just settle for games like this, oh well......if thats all he can do i'll live with it:D

there was lots and lots of man love yesterday for this guy
Lucky then that there is lots and lots of man to go around.:D:thumbsu:

He looked huge on TV when I watched the replay, bigger then in person at the game, which was good to see.

Love the fact the commentators compared his kicking style to Anthony Rocca, shows big ant has been teaching Dawes for years I'd say.:thumbsu:

Hope Dawes keeps Leroy brown in the VFL for the rest of the Season

That was because of his Stuffed Knee and Burgan said he was most likely after that a Rookie Pick. He also said us and the Saint where the 2 teams Interested in him

Well he should play in the AFL so he can get use to playing at that level with that Pressure and Attention and then he can work on gettting use to it like he did in the VFL
