Is the hype warranted for this bloke?

As a key fwd do his numbers stack up? Tom Hawkins prob has similar averages.

How does he go in the big games against the top sides? I've never seen him dominate or stand out.

Agree that he is probably good for the Pies fwd structure but at a struggling club I think he'd be found out.

Take the $500k if it's offered Chris and run for the hills.

Collingwood fans are the best.

If he is leaving for better money Collingwood will not get a much better offer than pick 12. Maybe you can trade that for a ready-made, but it would have to be one who you can fit under the cap. Who knows, maybe Thomas' odd strategy of pressuring the club with his implication he would leave for GWS HUGE money has forced them to dish out more.

Hell if Collingwood isn't careful they could lose 1/2 good players then have Jolly, Johnson, Tarrant, Brown and so on retire, all of a sudden losing a group of good premiership players.

Speculation of course

Not really.

I personally loved the thread on Paul Bower & Carlton supporters reactions in that. Let's face it, when you've been as mediocre as Carlton have been, trade week is your Grand Final, year in, year out.

Yep your right. Us potentially losing a promising KPP for a third round pick according to some punters is certainly not outrageous, especially when considering I suggested Collingwood would get a mid first rounder for a guy in a similiar scenario.

Well Cloke was - clearly - in the top couple of key forwards all year and 'apparently' Dawes was clearly better.

I only watched five (Rich Ess Geelong Carl Melb) of those... but in just about every one I thought Cloke was far, far, far, far, far, far better.

2/2.5 months is an exaggeration, but through the first 5 weeks Dawes was clearly our best forward, then picked up a knock or two and hasn't returned to best form since.

The thing is Dawes is probably the most misunderstood forward in the AFL, simply because the TV coverage would have you believe he's a stay-at-home FF who's supposed to be kicking tons of goals. He's nothing of the sort. His strengths lie in his hands below his knees (best of any tall I've ever seen at Collingwood), his disposal and decision-making (when he touches it we usually end up having a shot on goal) and his tank (one of the best 5 runners at the club despite being 100+ kg).

He struggles for speed and overhead marking, which is basically all people look for in key forwards, so he'll always be criticized, but he's an extraordinarily smart and effective player despite that. Would be devastated if we lost him.

Very much agree MDC. The amount of "clever" things he does goes unnoticed, even by many Pies fans. For those who don't believe, watch the GF replay & watch him closely. You'll be surprised how valuable he was that day & is to us overall.

This. First 5 weeks Dawes was in better form then Cloke then picked up some kind of niggle and dropped off. Cloke was pretty good in those games too but he got better and better as the year went on, Dawes just exploded out of the blocks racking up 3 goals and 20 touches a game. It's easily forgotten since it's been a long, long season but in thbose first few weeks people were talking about Dawes being our most important forward, which was a kneejerk but goes to show what kind of form he was in when the season started.

Everyones judgement is clouded me thinks as his last 4 or so weeks have been terrible as his lost confidence since comming back frmo a fractured knuckle, and the 7 weeks prior to that he was out. So noone has seen him in decent form for agessss but his a very good young player normally, great kick good attitude and normally a good mark. FAR better than tom hawkins

I reckon it would be a case of pick 16 or ibbotson/ griffen + 2nd round pick

There is no way Dawes will be traded, far too important too the team.

But hypothetically I would think he would be worth about pick 16 and griffin.
Quality tall forwards like Dawes are hard to come by, and he's only just turned 23 so plenty of room for improvement. Pick 16 in a weak draft could be very hit or miss and Griffen - while he's shown signs of being a good ruck - is still relatively unproven.

He did start well so I decided to have a look at his season..

1st 6 rounds against Port, Nth, Carl, Rich, Ess, WB
Games: 6
Disp avg: 17
Goal avg: 2.3

Against top 8 sides
Games: 9
Disp avg: 12
Goal avg: 1.3

Against top 4 sides
Games: 5
Disp avg: 10
Goal avg: 0.8

Understand he's had an interrupted season and injury may have skewed some of the numbers above but he only booted 30 goals last year (breakout year?) and bar the start of the year against a fair few mediocre teams has struggled to get his numbers up.

Smart player, most likely, but in a lesser side i think the risk would outweigh the investment. Would need to see more before committing.

if we don't get clark, i would love this bloke. would pick 16 + ibbotson / griffin do it?

Don't want Ibbotson.

I like Griffin but I would be hesitant due to him a: wanting to head back to Adelaide apparently and b: injuries.

The guy seems to change his mind alot. Did he not recently want to head to Perth FROM Adelaide and now wants back again? Strange guy.

Would probably leaning towards no unless Griffin can work his shit out.

Dawes would go well at the swans their got a good history of turning good players into great players, with their young forwards like sam reid 19, gary rohan 19 and players like spangher, mcglynn and goodes

willing to trade moore and bevan for him and mabye a late draft pick aswell

haha..

No but really.. HAHA!

Why do people think that a fringe player and a late draft pick will get them a Key Position player or a quality player.

A premiership key position forward at the age of 23 is worth a little more than Moore or Bevan and a nothing draft pick.

Remember was having a very good year before he broke his knuckle and was sidelined for 8 weeks. So don't let post injury form cloud your judgement.

Who could possibly think this is a fair deal? In any way?

Why dont Collingwood chuck in Pendles to even it up?

IMO Dawes will stay but if he has to go surely a deal can be done with our first pick aswell to get Sam Reid from Sydney or perhaps Jack Gunston and a 2nd round pick from Adelaide for Dawes.

Both are young and would give the club a bit of salary cap space.

I think we need to keep in mind that Dawes is not a superstar, well at least not yet, but the club won't let him go easy cos he is a VERY important structure player.

I think Collingwood will be able to keep Dawes so long as he doesn't hold them to ransom, although it will probably have to come at a small sacrifice. They will probably have Tarrant, Jolley and Davis off their books by the end of next year (end of 2013 at the latest) which will free up a fair bit of cap room for them, it may just mean 1 or 2 of the 3 have to retire a year early.

I think Dawes will only be effective at a club which already has a quality KPF. He is a very good 2nd fiddle, don't know how he would go as the main man.
