C JUDD - 3 VOTES !!!!!!!!!!

Chris Judd no ump's pet

SENIOR AFL umpire Shaun Ryan says the league's whistleblowers are so serious about the Brownlow Medal they can take up to 40 minutes to award their votes.

And he declared the umpires did not have favourites - not even dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd.

Collingwood star Dane Swan was the beaten $1.70 favourite last year, but Ryan believes Judd simply stood out more in his side's wins.

"There are no umpires pets, but I suppose with Chris (Judd), when Carlton wins, he generally plays well," Ryan said.

I'm not sure that there is no such thing as ump's pets. There's a couple of teams in the AFL who seem to be able to get away with murder. However, I wouldn't say Judd is an ump's pet either. Some people, particularly Pies fans, like to bitch and moan about how Judd is an ump's pet, when he really isn't. Yeah he gets Brownlow votes, but ask yourself why: maybe, just maybe, it's because he's a flat-out superstar who tears games apart. I think that has more to do with why he is so highly regarded rather than simply being an ump's pet.

The thing some people need to realise is that the umpires may very see/ hear things that we simply can't in the stands/ on the tv. i.e. Judd's 25 disposal game may be seen by the umps as far better than Swan's 40 disposal game because of his leadership and/or the way we wins the ball. Where to the fans, the stats seem to tell the whole story.

Firstly they are going to have a field day with those one over on the bay.

Secondly Swan may pick up 30-40 possesions a game, but he recieves the ball rather than going in and getting it himself like Judd does. Infact Pendlebury will win a brownlow before Swan does.

The fact that the umpires feel the need to deny this tells me that they are aware of the accusations, and it may in fact sway them the other way ... i.e not award votes where maybe they might have previously.

Human nature being what it is, I think the mud will stick and Judd is up against it.

Look no further than free kick stats to know that Judd is no umpire's pet. As our number one inside mid who is almost always tagged heavily, he has 16 free kicks from 10 games this season. 1.6 frees per game. How many times do you reckon he is scragged or impeded per game? He has also given away 9 free kicks. So a free kick differential of 8 in 10 games given the inside offensive nature of his game is nothing to write home about.
