Might sound a bit knee jerk but as good as Judd is, I think he's become too one dimensional a footballer. Teams have quelled his influence with regularity this year - he's struggled to combat hard bodies mids around the contest.

Has he become too heavy? Obviously he's still a champion footballer but the balance between his inside and outside game looks way off. Watching the replay of the Eagles vs. Swans semi-final back in 06, he looked a lot slimmer and moved with far more agility. Now, he's become very much a straight line player and does not turn very well at all.

He needs to start padding out his disposals, using his explosiveness when he can't get on top inside. Ablett's been criticised for his handball receives but it makes him a far harder game to nullify.

Get on top of Judd around the stoppages and he has no plan B. It's keep battling and hope he breaks the tag. Has worked on one or two ocassions with massive quarters this year but the last month it just hasn't worked for him.

The Eagles structured their midfield around giving Judd a free run. He has lost a fair chunk of his pace which was his strongest asset, you can't expect him to burst free if his teammates aren't giving him a chop out.

An objective measure of consistency:
Was voted in our best 5 in:
65% of matches in 2009.
80% of matches in 2010.
54% of matches in 2011.

Many claim it's been his best season in Navy Blue this season but I just haven't seen it. If Murphy does not win our best and fairest I'll be shocked.

Did they? He played with Ben Cousins and Daniel Kerr and if he was the best of the three, there wasn't much in it.

Still won the MVP

Early on in the year was running the quickest since he came to Carlton, then he had a baby

However, going forward with his age he'll need more of a chop out from his teammates. Be great if he was played as our second or third best midfielder.

I really think he's only lost about 15% of his pace. He's just playing from Inside/Out instead of Outside/In like his best days. Needs to step back and trust his mates to get the hard stuff, sit off the pack and hit the ball at pace a bit like Kerr was doing all night long.

They blocked for Judd in the way that we don't.

They had more small players and hardnuts with Fletcher, Braun, Stenglein, Jones, Selwood and Kerr to complement Judd, Cousins and Embley.

And Cox, Gardiner and Seaby giving them an armchair ride at stoppages.

In spite of Ratten's comment, I still suspect that Judd is carrying an injury that has taken away some of his burst.

Judd had more toe earlier in the year.

On the last month of poor form, I seriously think he's carrying something which would explain why he's going for more marks; trying to impact the game in another way.

Perhaps...don't think I've seen him look as slow as he has been in the game last night and vs. Hawthorn a fortnight ago. Hasn't really once broken out into a sprint and too often blokes have burst away from him while he laboured after them.

I guess it's a trade off between size and agility but back with WC, he was a brilliant contested player capable of damaging outside the contest. Now, he's an unbelievably good contested ball player with very little impact away from the contest.

mainly the last few goals are the difference between judd then and judd now. However I would say the way he gets the ball out of packs for Carlton now is a lot more important than what he did for WC. We had Kerr/Braun constantly getting the hard ball gets and a full time Judd blocker in Rowan Jones who was literally in the team to protect Judd. His groin has definitely slowed him down and I think he's done well to change the way he plays

if he was slightly embarrassed to win the brownlow last year, would suspect he'd almost be annoyed if he won it this year. anyone refused a brownlow before?

Dumb is exactly how I would characterise this. His form detracted in the last 3-4 weeks of the H&A. Before that, everyone was saying 'just give Judd the Brownlow now'. It's funny how the memory fades. Now if someone like Goodes won the Brownlow then I would say it is a blatant disgrace

It sounds a lot "knee jerk" to me. Judd has been down since the birth of Oscar, there's no doubt about it, but to attribute that form to some wider issue is ridiculous. No-one had any complaints about his approach or his form 6 weeks ago.

What I do like about this form slump though is that it's put the "one man team" philosophy to bed completely. We've played competitive football against some of the better teams in the league in the weeks when Judd's been quite.

Next year teams will probably switch the hard tag to Murph and Judd's impact will be back to where it was.

Was supposed to be rested through the year but the hunt for top 4 meant he had to play injured...he'll be disappointed in his finals campaign and with a legitimate chance at a premiership next year or the year after he'll be giving his all.

In Judd we trust!

As I posted elsewhere - he must be rested every op we get ie whole or part games even if he could be losing Brownlow votes. He must come into finals fit and fresh

He's still not getting a chop out from his teammates, but for a different reason I feel.

If Judd gets the bulk of the attention, then Murphy gets away. Murphy's disposal is better at the moment so he is the main one we want freed up. Having said that, Murphy seems to be playing smarter and is finding it easier to get free of any tag.

They need to get Judd out of the stoppages when this is occurring as he was not effective in even getting first hands on the ball due to being held out of it constantly. If he is no longer going to be protected by the umpires, it is up to his teammates to fight for him or Ratts to put him on another line.

One thing that we see to be overlooking is that Judd was getting the chop out when he was playing his best footy. Now he is providing that to Murphy.

He draws the hard tag, week in/week out. If a team doesn't do that he cuts them to pieces. He draws players to him when he has he ball, allowing others to spread and for the team to move it forward, often out the fat side.

'give him the brownlow now' is also in reference to peoples own distaste for umpire/media voting as much as anything.

and my statements were in reference to his own humility. by his own admission i think he would say he hasn't had as good a year as last.

It makes me sick watching the close up vision of Selwood blocking his run and holding him. In the Hawthorn game is saw countless free kicks given to mids for being blocked at stoppages I just couldn't understand why Judd doesn't get those free kicks.

As much as I despise the Hawks we need to play with a similar style of hardness in our game. Watch blokes like Lewis and Sewell belt the taggers at the stoppages we need Ellard, Robbo and Carazzo doing this. We were doing this a lot more earlier in the year and then it just dropped off. I just want to know why we don't protect our best players?

Outside a 5/6 week period where Judd dominated, Murphy's been quite clearly our best player this season.

Football supporters in general have short memories, such as those claiming Goodes is Brownlow favourite. Could not believe Tony Shaw claiming he could not be tagged when earlier in the season he was restricted to multiple sub 20 possession games.

That said, I've watched Judd closely all year and it's obvious that if he's not winning the footy around the clearances, then he's very unlikely to influence the contest. Why not have him start 15 metres off the stoppages and be there for the handball, or at the very least hit the contest at pace?

His lateral movement, for whatever reason, seems very poor. Hence why his kicking for goal on the run is so bad. It appears he's restricted to running only in straight lines - whether it's due to injury or being too bulky, I don't know.
