He never was a strong mark or a good kick

never a good kick? he used to be the best finisher in the game!! you just need to watch the video put up by happyeagle. It covers all his goals yet could easily be mistaken for a highlights package, he kicked goals from everywhere sprinting at full speed, field kicking was fine as well.

many Vic clubs felt spurned when Juddy shopped himself around.

IMO its contributed to his unpopularity

As a hawks supporter I can see that we later got Burgoyne, who is now essentially conrtibuting waht judd does - for less than half the price, both in trade ans in salary cap.

For Juddy, Imagine how he'd be going if the had Mitch, Lewis, Sewell watching his back ???

--Mind you, he still wouldnt have Big Cox feeding it down his throat !!!!!!

Issue in my mind is lack of midfield support. Gibbs has been a non factor this year and Murphy is out. One player doth not make a midfield. Carlton are suffering from injuries and their midfield depth doesn't go that far down.

Take Carazzo, Murphy and Scotland out of any team (along with Gibbs completely out of form) and any team will suffer. Judd is a lone hand and will struggle to have his normal output given the situation.

Expect improvement as their mids start coming back.
At west coast he was very well supported by Cousins and Kerr with a hugely underrated inside and blocking role by Rohan Jones (He did all the heavy lifting). This adds wieght to the arguement above and also the clear superiority of Ablett who is able to be brilliant with the Cats and no thw Suns.

dude, get serious, Judd has always been an average AFL kick. He can't kick the ball off the line he runs in so he has to stop and prop and try and turn his hips to get the ball off. And his depth touch with his kicks is just terrible.

But for now, Judd is trying to play as an inside midfielder but all he does is free his arms and rake handpass the ball 10m sideways or forward and the opposition clean it up. He doesn't have the deft 2m-3m handball you need to break open packs if he's going to play that style. Dunno what he thinks he's doing, he just doesn't have enough tricks I suppose as his sprint running is declining.

I am not sure what to make of him at the moment. I don't think I have ever seen him play a worse month of football, and that has now stretched to 6 weeks. Usually after a down game you can be sure he will kick back and dominate the next, but at the minute he just doesn't influence the game like he has in the past. Not only that but his opponent is flat out beating him.
Is it the lack of Murphy and Carazzo?

I guess that is interpretation.
Three of the last five games Judd has been good or better (StK, Adel & Geel).
His games against Melbourne and PA left a lot to be desired but over the stretch since he missed that week I can only think of one better performing Blue, Mitch Robinson.
Certainly he is not to the standard of past but then again Carlton are really struggling at the moment.
Last night he started poorly but was probably Carlton's best player after quarter time.

I don't agree with your interpretations.
St.Kilda I will say he was close to good, the other 2 he was not.

Judd is a fantastic player. Any side would love to have him (money aside). And if you still don't rate him, don't tag him next time your side plays Carlton and see what happens...

Maybe not at his absolute best at the moment form wise but he is still a champion.

The tide always turns for the great players.

He will rise again.

This is part of the problem at the moment. Teams are not tagging him, they are letting one of their mids hurt him the other way. Usually what you say is 100% correct, or at least it has been in seasons past, but not this season. Duncan playing on Judd had arguably more impact on the game than Judd. Especially on the scoreboard where he kicked 2 goals to 1.

I can't believe Duncan wasn't playing a tagging role even if it was a loose tag. If I'm wrong I'll cop it. If not, he must be injured- maybe his OP is playing up again, but he's forced to play due to Carlton's other injuries. Either way, he's allowed to have some flat patches- granted 6 weeks is a long stretch, but I think people are way too quick to write blokes off on BF. It's that whole Spud or Brownlow mentality.

Everyone gets older and everyone gets slower. Some slow down gradually over several seasons after they hit their peak and others virtually slowdown within a year once their body has had enough.
Juddy may be the latter?

They're tagging Simpson, and before that it was Murphy because Judd shovels out handballs and it's predictable and stoppable.

Was very good in terms of finishing as an Eagles player, much of that however has been on the declination at Carlton.

Turnover king. Got on the end of nice passages on play last night but undone his team mates work with shocking disposal.

Funny, the big 3 from that draft, Hodge, Judd and Ball all play hard in the clinches type football and now are all suffering because of it.

Don't think any of the 3 will have much more to give after the next couple of years.

..as i earlier said, it's a combination of things that on their own aren't a reason but together they're what's contributing to his 'form slump'.. ..truth is, he's playing a solid game.. ..not champ status, but it's cos he's been a champ of the game since he began that he's held up to his own very high standards..

..it's very hard for onballers to dominate without a proper pre-season these days as well..

He hasnt been the same since he left the eagles... Let me rephrase that he has not been the same since he injured his groin at the eagles.

I don't know if all the vic supporters even saw many of his games at the eagles he was better than Gaj, who is currently the best player.

Judd used to be the goal finish king, I'd love to see his stats on goals kicked per game joining the blues.

His best asset was always his burst speed...as soon as he starts losing 1/2 a yard of pace he was always going to come back into the pack. Will always be a great player but will fall out of the "Super Star" category earlier then alot people expected

This proves to me that the media have brainwashed some people about Judd. He was NEVER a good finisher. Best in the game ... lol.

I presume you watched the video of the 146 goals he kicked. Kicked numerous goals from outside 50 without difficulty. Kicked them from acute angles, snaps around the body and a lot on his left foot, and his field passing wasn't too shabby either. Being a West Coast supporter, I haven't seen much of him since he left, but if people think pace was his only asset when playing for the Eagles, then I don't think they've seen enough of him at his best.

Agree with this-he was superb pre groin in WA, but still think he has been terrific at Carlton overall and definitely worth the trade.
He has a lot of years in his body in footy years, takes a toll in the end. His latter half of last season was not great but thought he started off well this year. Declined again lately but expect him to still show up.

Show me a highlights package of Judd kicking goals and I'll show you a lowlights package of Judd shanking goals, and shanking kicks, and handballing to nowhere, and dropping marks, .....

He may drop out of the "Super Star" category but if he does, I think he may just drop a rung to "elite". Absolutely no reason why he can't still continue to be a gun contested ball winner that farms it out to the "pretty boy" outsides. We don't think any less of Watson, Kennedy etc.. do we? So Judd loses a bit of pace and moves down to the rung that includes those types of players. Still one of the best going around.

P.S. yeah yeah I also don't like using those categories. Seemed the right thing to do in this instance to keep the ball rolling.

Judd is a champion, does the midfield support affect Gary Ablett Jr and his output?

Being a lone hand and now not being tagged in an ordinary midfield, one would expect a player of Judds ability to be ripping it up individually even if the team is struggling.

Ablett and Judd are very different players in that Judd these days is an inside mid who extracts for others. Those kind of players are only as good as those around them and the support they receive.

And Ablett's teammates look for him at every opportunity. He gets many possies that don't mean much in the context of the game. And I'm not saying this to talk Ablett down as I consider him the best player in the comp. I just no longer rate him as the most influential player in the game. But definitely the best. Can play mid and forward and be equally good at both. Who does that remind you of...Leigh Mathews anyone??

If Carlton were smart they'd manage him very carefully once their top 8 chances fade. In fact I wouldn't even play him after round 14/15. Give the responsibility to the rest of the mids, get his body right for next pre season. He can be 100% come next year, with a group of midfielders who won't be relying on him like they do now.
