Noticed today at afl.com theres a full page write up on chrissy kangars, interesting for the website to do such a write up on a rookie, normally these honours go to the number draft pick. This guy is going to be a very good player, he is exceling extremely quick in his footballing skills and his athletisism is probably up there with the best playing footy right now. this kid is the one to look for in the future i reckon he will pay off as our best pick from this draft:thumbsu:

I was surprised that we didn't draft him in the national draft so for him to last for so long in the rookie draft was a real shock. If he can learn to read the game off the likes of Scarlett and Milburn he'll be a real assett. From the sounds of things he's pretty keen to prove a lot of people wrong.

hes known more as an athlete than a footballer is he not? if he can develop his footy smarts and disposal he should be very handy. he certainly has a good size body for the game.

Yeah mate, your spot on. Inface Kangas runs 400m quicker then Freeman does! His footskills aren't that great (Reason why he fell through to us in the rookie draft) so expect David Wheadon to work a lot with him over the next 2 years.

Running the 400 quicker than Freemen is nothing to get excited about. I'm no champion athlete and did that when at school!

I think you'll find most blokes on an AFL list could run sub 53 secs for 400m....

I think you'll find that Freeman ran something like 48 sec. at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. To run faster than that is impressive and i dont think you're telling the truth about running at that time, otherwise like Chris you would've been very close to running with the Australian national 4 X 400m team.

Sorry, my bad. I thought she runs around the 51 sec mark (which is what i ran at school) and so isn't all that remarkable......

If he's running 48 sec, that's pretty handy. I'd go a footballer over an athlete any day though. That's not to say that Chris can't pick the game up to the required level......just that few do.

I agree with the footballer over athlete policy and i think GFC do as well. There was a lot of hype around David Armitage before the 2006 draft, however Geelong went with Selwood ahead of him and it looks like that pick has already paid for itself.
On the point of Kangars however he is a freak athlete, one of the best in Vic for his age and at the pick we got him with (last in the rookie draft) was very good value as if we can teach him the game and drill in the fundamentals of AFL as we did with Egan we will reap the rewards with a player that may turn out to be similar to C. Cornes or Kouta in his heyday as these two players pplay CHB but use their incredible athletism to become one of their teams most attacking weapons.

He sounds great, if ever the opportunity arises where we need someone to get the ball in front of goals, run all the way to the other end of the ground, do a big turning circle and run all the way back to the goal line, he will be UNBEATABLE!

There is a world of difference between a track athlete and a tennis player. As a tennis player, Egan had to have great physical fitness along with fantastic hand-eye co-ordination, fast reactions and an ability to read the play to be in the right location. A field athlete only needs the physical fitness.

You reckon as a schoolkid you were as fast as Daniel Motlopp at 22?

No, i ran 51.9....so Motlop got me there.

To be competitive in the 400m, you'd need to get down to 45-46 sec mark. To drop 5 secs is pretty hard to do....especially when Motlop ran his time in pretty peak fitness.

He made the right choice....

True, however Egan wasn't playing for Geelong Falcons for a year before getting drafted. From what i've heard Chris has being playing footy for a while, his preferred sport however, was athletics. Egan was focusing on tennis until he was roughly 18/19 then started playing for the VFL side in 2004 having had no experience in the game, this makes me believe that Chris can have the same improvement as Egan did.
