Playing someone like a Masten or a Roughead isn't going to quell development - it's going to support it

This is what I think.

Having a few of these types in the team is a good thing. It's only a bad thing when there are too many of them... but having say one in each of the main positions of the ground - forward/middle/back, is good for supporting those young players that are on the field, and putting a strong body in there for when more developed teams try to bully them around.

You know. Taking a bunch of AFL journeyman rather then talented young kids is a pathway to success!

I think Mastem is better then everyone else.in that list. I think Mastem has left for one last contract. He's durable and an ok wingman. Could Do better. Can't do worse for a free agent pick up for 2/3 years.

I found that hilarious when you posted that. Brisbane bears in 1987 was made up of a lot of journeymen and old players. they were horrible from 1987-91.

Plus their recruiting back then was terrible too.

Also think west coast of 1987. They had a handful of players that had played from other VFL/AFL clubs such as Ross Glendenning, Steve Malaxos and John Annear. While the rest of the squad was made up of young players aged 18-21.


Masten isnt going to rob a kid of devlopment isnt he?

Regardless if he plays on the wing or plays off the bench, it wont prevent a club rotating kids off the bench

Not that GC want to pick up everyone's junk, but surely they could do worse than putting him on the rookie list for a year? See what happens...

Would/could be a break glass option and by all reports is a very good trainer. Was a bit of a dickhead early on apparently including by his own admission, but seems to have settled and could at least set some standards on the track and bring some good habits from a professional club that he played in finals regularly with, including a premiership.

Ed Langdon is already traded. Brad Hill is likely gone.

So basically what freo has left in outside mid stocks an Ageing and injury prone Stephen Hill and a few kids.

If Masten was victorian, he would of been looked at by 2-3 clubs on a 2 year deal as depth.

Funny thing is Crows cant get rid of Josh Jenkins. Crows make the mistake of giving a 5 year deal. if it was only 3 years, he would of been out of contract this year.

yes he would of been a free agent. That would of been easier to move jenkins out.

agree with both, masten is worth picking up for a club chasing depth for sure. Beats the heck out of a skinny 18yr old as a break glass in emergency type set up.

Surely GC take him with one of the extra rookie selections they have. The 10 rookie list spots they have could almost exclusively be used for state league talent and mature role players. He is a beautiful kick inside 50 and keeps his feet in the wet

Masten's a pretty terrible decision maker. Technically good kick, but picks awful options.

But they also did it with Barlow, Rischitelli, Rosa, Lyons (although he's an interesting case), Horlin-Smith etc.

It's not enough to just be a senior body.
