I would like to see a sustained effort (over a period of weeks) from Masten at AFL level before believing he has turned the corner.

Interestingly enough on last week's ABC Saturday morning Sportstalk Ken Judge said he was pleased Masten had 'earn't his recall for last week's game against Richmand. He went onto say he (KJ) thought Masten had received a bit of an easy ride in terms of being promoted back into the team after limited numbers of good performances in the WAFL.

As for rosa being up and under going inside 50 ... I'm fairly sure that's the game plan, setting up lines of marking players, kicking to either line. Contested marking has been a key and giving the forwards a run at the ball often pays off if nobody is in clear space.

Just watched Chooseday night football on Fox Sports, WCE vs RICH round 12 at Etihad in 2009. Nicnat's first game. Very interesting seeing Masten, Ebert and Selwood out there as second year players and Swift in only his second or third game. Ebert and Selwood have come on in leaps and bounds since then, but watching Masten was interesting. He was quite impressive in this game, skills were sharp, very slick hands, seemed to be everywhere around the ground (even if he didn't get the ball, he seemed to be around every contest) and I saw him run and bounce a couple of times (to the poster who mentioned he hadn't seen Masten do this at AFL level). I remember at the end of 2009 Masten hit some really impressive form, I just hope he gets a decent run at it before the end of this year.

Was there. Shame we lost.

I don't think he necessarily has to hit the scoreboard himself. I think his role will be a bit similar to those of Ebert and Nicoski, they don't always kick goals every week (although Nico's goals are a pleasant surprise every game) but the score assists and shepherds and tackles are all gold as far as this position is concerned.

for surely..same could be said about most in that zone..i just cant recall him ever kicking many goals..certainly not like ebert (and who wouldve thought?)
but nothing will get you more noticed than kicking goals..given the goalsquare is part of your turf.

but he's been left off the plane-tough to get a gig!
i actually think he's got a lot of upside to him, just need to get him to the next level..frustrating for all..

I still think his best shot of making it is trying to play the Braun role. Whilst Braun was obviously bigger (more muscular) it didn't really matter as he was a hard running, outside receiver with good finishing skills.

Masten has mostly been played in the centre and amongst the congestion and stronger bodies....It seems he just can't handle it as he's too light and too easily buffeted off the prune. Can't break or stand up in tackles either and he's not strong over the ball which means he isn't clean with his hands at ground level. Obviously a number of bigger, stronger players have leap-frogged him in there and Gaff, Rosa and Embley have the outside roles pegged.

So they want him to play HF now, don't think he is suited there at all....Not a strong mark and suspect under even a little bit of pressure from a defender....Defensive side and goal kicking also pretty average. Hams better for this.

So really he hasn't been good enough to nail any position and has a number of players in front of him in every position he can play......

This is just a gut feel, but I reckon the club and he will agree to part at years end.

^ Has hardly had a fair go in the middle though. When he does, from my memory, he has played pretty well. I have no doubt that if we persisted with him in the middle by now he'd be a best 22 player.

Dont think Masto has the size required for a HFF, but here's hoping he proves me wrong. Agree about his marking being suspect though, dont think thatll ever be a feature of his game.

ABC Sportstalk this morning Scott Burns said Masten was going to be sub again this week. The Match Committee then realised East Fremantle have had a disjointed extended period in the WAFL and Masten's recent game time is negligible.

Felt he was better served getting a full game this week with East Freo than spending 3/4 of the game warming the pine.

Makes sense

Makes sense

The way Burns said it it made very good sense.

Ken Judge made the comment that it was his understanding that the Eagles didn't want to use the same player as a sub two weeks in a row. (We did this with Gaff early, but since then I don't think we have). Judge's point then was that if Hams is the sub then next week he will either be in the 21 or back in the WAFL.

for those reasons, im not really happy with the sub rule.

makes it hard for those players to take their opportunity, most of the time they only have a quarter to make an impression.

postives of the sub rule outweigh the negatives.

should be two subs per game though IMO

Just remember that Masten is travelling to Geraldton now with East Freo to Vs West Perth.

So hopefully the hardened grounds of Geraldton aren't to much for him :D
