Toast Chris Masten

He was OK at best. A "real impact" is mcginnity saving us with brave efforts against the bulldogs last week. Not masten coming on when we are pantsing the tigers and not mucking up for once.

Definitely don't think he warrants a toast. But thats just me. I don't rate him, sorry. Harsh i guess.

Watch the game again DS, I have, and tell me if your opinion is the same. Healey made comment about him going harder, as he should, but wanted the ball a bit more. If you still think he was OK and didn't impact, then yes, you're a bit harsh and dare I say, maybe a bit blinded. :)

It's the nature of footy supporters swannies. We excuse our favourites for mistakes that we would lambast others for. Masten had an impact when he came on and generally did pretty well so he should get credit for it. Shuey mad a couple of pretty ordinary passes into our forwardline but is still rightly considered to have had a very good game - if masten had have made those passes he would be getting hammered for it

I know. I had a chuckle at that. He did cough up two goals from bad kicks(indirectly) but overall was a very good influence for us.

He was not bad

Which is an improvement on bad

Woosha: Wow, Masten didn't play too badly. I feel so full of...what's the opposite of shame?
Sumo
: Pride?
Woosha: No, not that far from shame.
Masten: [quavering] Less shame?
Woosha: [happy] Yeah...

played like he was playing for his life!
looked like he was trying to be very enthusiastic in everything he did and to his credit he played well.

shouldnt take a top 3 pick to have to fighting for his spot to have to be that enthusiastic

im just sayin :)

Not OVERLY impressed. But it was a good showing nonetheless.

I just thought he came on with fresh legs when Richmond were asking for the mercy rule. Anyone showing effort at this point would win the ball you know...

He's got four weeks to show he can maintain that level of effort. Hopefully he "gets it" now after his stint in the WAFL. Was I mistaken or did he lose the fringe and mo? That's step 1.

Yeah, not sure this deserved a toast. Was OK, nothing more, nothing less. Don't think toasts should be brought out for games like this.

The main positive I thought was his confidence to break/shrug a tackle. In previous years (and maybe it was due to his OP) he would just get thrown to the ground like a rag doll.

IMO that's been the number one flaw in his game and the reason that Woosh has tried to use him up forward rather than in the middle. If he can stay fit and keep working on his core strength I guarantee he will be a very valuable long term player.

What, 12 disposals in 25% TOG? Thats a pretty good effort, plus he used the ball really well, his handalls in traffic were superb, setting up outside runners. I was really glad to see him in the middle for most of the time he was on the ground, this is where he needs to play.

Vey quick hands I noticed as well. One touch straight to a running player.
Could be a bit of a back up to Priddis in this regard.
But overall only played a quarter and a bit and was noticeable in a positive way.
Toastworthy, probably not. Recognition worthy, yes.

Are people really surprised that he plays similar to Priddis??

He was an inside mid when drafted. We knew he has quick hands and is great at getting the hard ball. Issue is, that is kind of a position we aren't lacking. He's been sent to the WAFL to develop other areas of his game. While he has shown he is not that good at these positions, he will still be a future gun inside mid. Despite what many on here think.

Yep, him and Swift both have very good hands inside, but can't/won't get a game there ahead of Kerr, Priddis, Shuey and the taggers (Adam, Scooter). So they are required to develop skills to play other positions on the field.

might get his chance to shine with rosa sidelined

has the potential to be a better player than rosa IMO
Disagree with this.

I think rosa has a better mark, disposal, work ethic, tackle breaking ability and is now capable of getting any ball, contested or uncontested. I think for now he's shitting all over masten.

Masten does have the ability to be more dangerous around goal though.

Masten is a better kick currently (even with Rosa having improved vastly from when he was about Mastens age), their work rate is probably on a par, and I think you should go have a look at the tapes and take note of Rosa's tackle breaking ability at 22 - pretty much non-existent.

I was super impressed with his work.

Although, from where I was sat, he really did avoid some contests that he should have hit harder.

A couple of times I looked to my old man and we both shook our heads at his softness, which is worrying.

Healey commented on how hard he was hitting the contest and I'm not sure he avoided any contests from what I saw. Softness was not one of the knocks on him as a junior. Maybe you were watching the same game as my mother in law who accused Masten of taking Rosa out. :p
