Healey commented on how hard he was hitting the contest and I'm not sure he avoided any contests from what I saw. Softness was not one of the knocks on him as a junior. Maybe you were watching the same game as my mother in law who accused Masten of taking Rosa out. :p

Yeah as I said, it wasn't a consistent thing, it was just a couple of times I noticed him back out..

Then again I'm always focusing my attention on him when he's out there so I'm probably digging for negatives there.

Not taking anything away from his performance, which was very good :thumbsu:

watching from the stands I noticed him doing a hell of a lot more work off the ball than I've seen before, both defensively covering space and/or players, and then spreading to give an option and calling for it when we got the ball back. Definitely the best attitude and performance I've seen from him this year. Just hope he's finally realised that the no.3 draft pick doesn't get him a guaranteed spot, and he's gonna have to work bloody hard to stay in the side from here on in

I was super impressed with his work.

Although, from where I was sat, he really did avoid some contests that he should have hit harder.

A couple of times I looked to my old man and we both shook our heads at his softness, which is worrying.

put up a great contest against two bigger opponents in the last and brought the ball to ground allowing nico to kick his 6th

I can't recall ever seeing him taking a bounce at AFL level?

I accept he has been an inside mid for most of his career but has found himself on a HFF and wing quite a bit in the last two seasons.

Why doesn't he run and spread? He has good endurance and a nice kick so not sure why he hasn't adopted a more outside role which he has obviously been instructed to develop.

He skirts around packs and is often too stationary, and still too weak to influence the clearances. Run and spread and link! Now that Rosa is out, this is his chance to offer the team something, if he can't cement his place this time in I reckon he is almost done, has been in the system a long time now and still not able to find a place in the team.

If he doesn't figure in finals football this year he will be trade bait if anybody wants him.

Needs to get bigger still and stick those tackles, but the talent is there.
Has exceptional hands.

could it be that he gets confused whether to play inside or outside? Masten's instinct might be to go in, but then the structure has him needing to be outside and sometimes it can lead to be in two minds.

him being soft was never an issue so it cant be that in my opinion.

Could definately go with that.

Just watched Chooseday night football on Fox Sports, WCE vs RICH round 12 at Etihad in 2009. Nicnat's first game. Very interesting seeing Masten, Ebert and Selwood out there as second year players and Swift in only his second or third game. Ebert and Selwood have come on in leaps and bounds since then, but watching Masten was interesting. He was quite impressive in this game, skills were sharp, very slick hands, seemed to be everywhere around the ground (even if he didn't get the ball, he seemed to be around every contest) and I saw him run and bounce a couple of times (to the poster who mentioned he hadn't seen Masten do this at AFL level). I remember at the end of 2009 Masten hit some really impressive form, I just hope he gets a decent run at it before the end of this year.

Masten is a very good depth player at worst.
We have great depth this year with many young Eagles performing week in and week out in the WAFL.
This has been one of our great strengths this season.
Posters on this site would be better versed on determining just who to delist to make room for new draftees rather that trying to destroy a strength .
Everybody should know by now that the Eagles don't ditch young players like some clubs. They give them every opportunity and have reaped the rewards.
Over the years I have seen posters call for the head of Glass,Embley,Lynch, Nicoski,Mckenzie, Schofield, Ebert,Rosa,Priddis and the Selwoods.
Someone must have known better beceause if i'm not wrong , all these players are top 22.

that was his 20th odd game, as a 19 year old, and the start of an amazing couple of months of great football before being injured.

It's entirely possible that masten will be that 1 footballer in 1000 that plays his best football as a teenager. Maybe he won't ever play that well again, who knows? Stranger things have happened.

I think it's very silly to write him off, though

Biggest weakness IMO.

Rosa is a great kick streaming into the 50 for a wingman he could probably up his goals per game though.

please.

rosa is not a "great kick" in any situation, and he's the king of i50 up and unders.

masten can, and has pulled off some damn nice worm burners. much better kick than rosa.

Yep that could have been said of Rosa two years ago with impunity - not anymore. His kicking has really come on - he's an excellent kick now.

He's not an excellent kick at all. He's an adequate kick now that is all. 2+ years ago he was a poor kick and his kicking was below what was required to be a consistant AFL player. It has improved significantly but will never, ever be better than average at afl level. Hurn's kicking is excellent.

Average kick or great the fact is that he has been hitiing teamates on the chest recently. Early on in his career he was running with it more but now he takes afew steps then delivers which really works well for him.

i would rate rosa as a good kick. hes below the hurns and smiths but hes accurate, good under pressure, has a left boot, and has enough power and penetration that he can bomb a goal from outside 50. hes in a group at the eagles with nicoski (left foot only), lynch, hurn and kennedy who are all dangerous from outside the arc

when he arrived at the club, his kicking was terrible, the sandbag floater was his only kick.

he is a great example of what 6 years in the system can do for your kicking.

dont forget Cox...and the coach.

whatever it is with masten, and swift...i guess more will be revealed, one way or another, next season-and curiously,it all has a way of sorting itself out!

masten could still be anything with enough consecutive gametime under his belt..hasnt settled into a role-or hasnt had the chance to..i agree at worst he could be a GOOD depth player..then theres swift, stevens, hams, sheppard, strijk etc weve got plenty of potential+depth..in a way weve already got our cuzznjudd replacements in gaffashuey..so if any of the above step up and take the game on (incl.masten),well, to coin a much overused term - "we'll be awesome" (dude!) :D

ps-never had a problem with rosa-could always see his potential-he seemed better back when the old team was around-or playing in a more settled team-same could be said for a few players? but he's much needed now,and i love those big goal bombies he does-i recall a great one he did in 2007? when cuzz was around.. cuzz was running past expecting the handoff-instead rosa steadied and let sail-bit like a nicoski-long high stinger missile, exploding amongst the cheer squad? GOAL!
