Them and Adelaide work to different paramaters.

Actually Syd draft OK players - they just seem to draft the wrong ones for them.

Since that date these are the blokes they've acquired with their 1st round draft picks

Ted Richards
Daniel OKeefe
Patrick Veszpremi
Lewis Johnston

And the players you have mentioned - which is a too early to tell - with perhaps the exception of Jetta who is older.

Richards the only one getting a game - and he's hardly a world beater.

Didn't cop enough whacks in under 11's did he? :p

Not nearly enough. ;) I've got 2 lined up for Wednesday night training for squibbing marking contests on the weekend. :):p

what I have been pushing for is not "outside" zippy players but elite midfielders ... there is a difference. Shuey for example has a very good chance to be one.

If that is the case would you go all out for this Western Sydney draft considering these players are predominately taken at the pointy end of the draft and it doesnt look like we will be getting top 3 picks any time soon.

I think we are already looking to do that. Obviously "all out" is an issue given that its a 17 year old who can't play until 2013 and will likely not contribute much until 2015 and beyond...

But if our recruiters are sure of a 17 year old developing into an elite mid then you package good for elite every day of the week ...

American sport is filled with examples of a star being traded for 4 players and a mid-range pick and the "star" generally wins the trade ...

We are short a couple of top line mids as it currently is Kerr then 2 kids who might make it. A lot of eggs in the Shuey/Gaff basket at the moment. Perhaps I am underrating Scooter because he still has some chance of being a Sewell type mid IMO ...

The funny thing is some of those kids were quite highly rated before they got draftd. Vespremi in particular i thought was very good. It seems they get to Syd and fall into a black hole.

Rather a circular argument I know, but I have had some doubts both about Syd's drafting AND their player development for some time. It seems that unless your body strength allows you to play a very tough man on man style then you are wasted at Syd

This I agree with.

I also back the coaches and recruiters to identify the talent we may pick up and identify which of our current kids are B graders at best and tradeable. If the WS pick will net us an A grader basically anyone not currently getting a game (except for Lycett, Sheppard and Waters) is tradeable.

You can never have enough A grade midfielders...

Paul Roos was fairly consistent in his criticism of the young players last year in relation to their attitude.

Seems to be a divide between the mature and junior players - last year at least

The West Coast hierarchy finally seem to understand that Chris Masten is not a first choice player. When he became available a few weeks back they did what they haven't done before, they left him playing with the Sharks. Prior to that every time he came back after injury he'd play one game with East Freo then be straight back into the Eagles starting lineup as though he belonged there. Problem is that he's shown nothing in 50 odd games to deserve that priority. He seems to get games SOLELY on his draft position as opposed to what he's actually done.

At the start of every season we read about how he's been tearing the track apart and recording PBs. That's fine, if you're running the 5,000 metres at the London Olympics. His issue isn't fitness, it's that he appears to lack the skills necessary to be an AFL player. He's a shocking kick, much in the Rowan Jones mould, where most of his efforts end up in opposition hands. He's not quick, is poor overhead and is an average tackler. Worst of all he has adopted another Rowan Jones trait, the parallel defender. By this I mean he neither attacks the man with the ball nor zones off to block the outlet kick, he merely runs parallel to the opposition player with the ball who rightly determines that if Masten won't tackle him he'll simply take a bounce and keep moving forward. Andrew Gaff has shown more in a few games how far he is ahead of Masten.

I'd trade him in a heartbeat and use his No 3 draft position as a selling point. Sadly recruiters are much smarter than me so we'd get nothing for him, but so be it.

Despite all I've said chances are he's a nice guy, despite that ridiculous mo. He needs to do what Brad Ebert appears to have done, show that you desperately want a spot in the team. Ebert seemed to flick a switch a while ago and all of a sudden was throwing himself into packs and being pro-active. Magically, or not, his play rose to another level. Chris Masten should watch and learn.

You left out a couple of important flaws in his game and his character that will count against him ever being a top line AFL player. He makes very poor and times panicked decisions simply because he shits himself. If he had 1% of the courage that Rowan Jones had he just might be a chance. I will be very surprised if he is on our list next season in fact I believe the decision to trade him has already been made and I agree that we won't get much for him.

I know it's too late for this year but is there any chance you can take over the senior job at Swans next year and replace the goose that currently has the gig??

2 touches in 1.5 quarters of garbage time against a depleted opposition...

...would like to see him get a full game in the guts against Brisbane or Adelaide to see if he's really up to it or not

I don't think he's worthy of a spot in the 21 at this stage.

Swift and Masten have both have multiple stints, I think Stevens deserves another bite of the cherry before the finals

I don't think there is any use playing with the team structure at this point, if a player hasn't proved themselves by Round 22 then the opportunity should only come through player unavailability (i.e. injury or suspension).

It was a very scrappy game, pretty hard for a half forward to get touches in that sort of game. He'll probably start instead of Hams next week.

The same people that want Swift in will be calling for his head after a bad game. Good supporters we have here.

This forum is bipolar.

It is a bit....There are the very PRO Masten fans that give him every benefit of the doubt (however small)....He's carrying an injury, he's played out of position, he needs match fitness, coming on as a sub worked against him etc....Then there's the ANTI Mastens- He's a spud, too small, got tickets on himself, crab, can't kick etc.....

I don't hate the guy like some seem to, but imo he is a good WAFL player without the physical attributes and talent required for AFL longevity.
