Who’s angry now? If you want to start an argument on a public forum then you should be prepared for others to jump in, and also be prepared to have your argument destroyed if you haven’t done your homework properly before mouthing off at others.

Accept that you were wrong and stop resorting to personal abuse. Christ, I’m not even a Mayne advocate, but I trust the tackle stat more than your hyperbole.
You are the one name calling without knowledge, I've had previous arguments with Finnishpie the phd man before yet you chose to jump on board blind, did I call you any names? Did you watch the game? there is no way he had 9 effective tackles, my arguement is still as strong as it was before, watch the game.

Yes, I watched the game. I suggest you re-watch it, because really, your argument has no real substance other than “I don’t think that the stats are right”.

Seriously man, relax. We’re all pies supporters. We all want what’s best for the team. It’s okay for people to disagree, but let’s just be calm about it? And use logic and argument rather than invective.

That is a very reasonable response.

The wing references are basically to highlight that he is not playing the same role that Fasolo would play.

The meters gained is a bit chicken and egg for mine...if there is no option for him to kick to, isn’t it smarter to hold up and go laterally try and feed it to a dasher?

Some posters have just decided that Mayne isn’t up to it...any mistake he makes is what people remember. EVery thread suggesting changes basically has a default Mayne out option.

He was fine yesterday, top 3 for pressure acts and tackles...whilst also having more score involvements, disposals and meters gained than Varcoe and Thomas.

That game just proved he is still AFL standard...not a star, but will do his job

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but this is all completely contradictory. He is not doing his job. The job of a wingman. In my opinion the ‘dasher’ is the wingmans job. I.e carrying the ball between the arcs.

If he’s not a wingman, I’d love to know what other position he is trying to play in the team.

And yes the direct comparison between him and Fasolo might not be accurate, it doesn’t have to be.

Fasolo enables the team to have other options. He plays forward, can be creative and kicks goal. Which sure as shit based on exposed form Mayne can’t.

It also allows a player such as a WHE and even Stephenson to push up the ground to the wing and provide ‘dash’.

.
We shift the ball out to the wings and flanks and then try to feed it inboard to runners streaming through the guts.

Based on that rationale I’d argue he is performing a completely superfluous and unnecessary role.

Why do something in 3 steps that you can do in 2?

Unless of course we actually want the opposition to fully set up their zone...

Because the zone shifts across to better cover down the line. Giving you a bit more space in the corridor and opening up the other side of of the ground to exploit.

Sounds very similar to the well orchestrated and executed manoveours detailed in the infamous Collingwood 2016 / Essendon 2018 playbook.

Perhaps I didn’t really word it properly, but the point is that people need to stop comparing Fasolo to Mayne.

Mayne just had 25 pressure acts and 9 tackles, whilst playing well up the ground and doing plenty of grunt work.

He also got involved offensively and was involved in six scoring chains, and was a good link option.

He played a good game, if you are omitting players based on performance against the Cats, Mayne is not even in the conversation.

WHE, Stephenson, DeGoey and Crocker are guys playing a role that I think the club want Fasolo to play.

The first three ARE kicking goals.

DeGoey can play in the middle too, and is just a quality player who needs to find consistency.

WHE, Stephenson and Crocker are some of our hardest workers. Against Geelong they were 3 of our 4 best in terms of ground covered...they work hard both ways.

Our opponent Geelong, early in the year were kicking 100+ points with Menzel kicking bags of 4 and 5...yet the Cats were lucky M.Gawn missed a sitter or they would have been 0-3.

They subsequently lost Menzel and Ablett, to injury, but then dramatically improved defensive structure and have been rattling off wins based on an improved defensive structure...it isn’t pretty, but from a coaching perspective it is much better to win a game 80-50 than to lose 100-110.

If Fas still isn’t doing the requisite hard work at VFL level and responding to his coaching, he won’t get a game. If he is, for mine he comes in for Crocker.

Because I'm sick of gutless trolls on here who hide behind their keyboards, poor excuses for men, I bet they wouldn't be game enough to say the shit they say to peoples faces. I know about the demotion of the stat it's the keyboard warriors who claim they know it all , to even contemplate that Mayne is a good footballer is enough for me not to take these trolls seriously

I've not seen any posters suggest this. Its more recognising that at best Mayne is currently a stop gap, and his performances are serviceable. There is angst about him keeping younger players with potential out of the side, and I share that angst. But Mayne doesnt select himself, and if picked to play we expect to see him play as well as he can within his currently limited range. Meanwhile he was involved in some reasonable defensive work on Sunday, for which he gets a tick; but with our best and most promising players fit and available, he wouldn't normally be selected on that alone.

This.

I genuinly feel sorry for Chris. He looks a player completely void of confidence. He's having a crack and I thought he played reasonably well against the Cats but he made a few errors where he just looked like he didn't want the ball in his hands. It's hard to blame him, imagine moving jobs and instantly becoming the whipping boy where if he makes a mistake hes a dud, when nearly any other player makes the same mistake it hardly gets mentioned. I'm not defending the contract, or even the decision to recruit him but give the guy a go. The amount of crap this bloke cops on social media is unparalleled in the AFL. Depression is becoming a major issue with AFL players.. Its not hard to see why.

How long would it take you to earn $500,000? Chris gets this every year. Let’s not forget that.
Personally I earn about $30,000 a year after tax. It would take me about 15 years to earn what he gets in one single year without having to do as much work.

If someone offered you $500,000 a year to do the same job as you do now but at another company would you take it?, or would you be honest and say, sorry guys but I'm not worth that amount..... I don't believe he hasn't played as well as we had hoped because of lack of effort, I'm sure he's giving it everything he has. No one on this board would have turned down that contract. It's not his fault it was offered to him.
The contract is what it is, lets give the guy a go because hes not as bad as most on here make out he is!

So now Mayne's a tax cheat as well?

I’d take it and I certainly wouldn’t care wether people felt sorry for me. I’d have the best life with $500,000 in the bank.

If Mayne keeps getting 25 touches a game like last week he'll hold his spot in the team. And who knows? With a bit of confidence and regular senior games he might even start having a few big games. Given that we've got the Saints and the Dogs over the next two weeks he couldn't ask for a better opportunity to play himself back into form and get up a bit of momentum and self belief.

You should check out Olympic Gold Medalist Dean Lukin. Great weightlifter.
But he made millions at tuna fishing.

Might be something for you?

A couple of months ago I was jogging on the beach with my 17 year-old son. After a leisurely 20 minutes he said 'do you want to race?'

I immediately took off without answering, hoping to crush his spirit with a big initial lead.

Within seconds he had flown past me, possessing leg speed that had left me some time before WW2. Of course my ego was dented. Age is cruel, taking away our dignities and powers.

And on Sunday I watched Chrissy Mayne spinning in sand as he tried to close-in on a Geelong backman. I saw in him a kindred spirit. A man whose physical best is in the rear vision mirror who valiantly rails against the dying of the light (Arts degree metaphors). Keep fighting Chris, I'm barracking for you.
