Yep a whopping tally and definitely see why people are saying he will kick 40 next year in the AFL against better opposition...they have a solid argument there.

It is a bit of a stretch, isn't it?

I was all for recruiting Mayne last year when I thought we were getting him on a minimal contract as a FA. When I heard we were offering decent money over 4 years I was mystified. I thought he offered nothing over Blair and that turned out to be right.

But that's done now. We can't get out of paying him, so he might as well be on our list and being as well supported to contribute something back as is possible.

Let's not be too logical.
Let's not make the best of an awkward situation

someone suggested on here (can't be bothered going through the pages) that he be trialled down back next season.

We've got him for 3 more years like it or not, no harm in trying this I reckon. If he's quick and is a reasonable kick then I can't see why he couldn't do it. If Liam Jones can transfer successfully then Maybe should be able to become a decent small defender.

It's his lack of pace that counts against him. Could likely live with it if he was 195cm.

I never wanted him recruited but I honestly feel for the bloke who has done nothing wrong. Was offered a contract, accepted, not really what the club needed. Best for all if we all move on. Try to find him a new home, even if it means we're paying the lion's share of his contract, draft a kid with potential in his spot. Even if we can't find a home for him we'd be better off trying a kid in 2018.

what about a draft dump? I'm told they're pretty common in American sports

If Jarryd Blair can get games as a small pressure player then surely Mayne is more equipped to play than Blair. He's a better mark and generally kicks the ball better. I wouldn't write off a miraculous turnaround from Mayne but he must be given an extended run before it's too late and we will be wondering what ever happened. A forward line with him contributing on the scoreboard is going to benefit the side no ends, and I wonder how he will be seen when he does start to play well.

Blair is quicker and more agile, a better crumber, a better ball winner and a better though traffic.

I'm not saying Blair is particularly good in these areas either though.

Liam Jones is a freak athlete.

Mayne is undersized, has no experience in defence and isn't a particularly quick thinker when he's got the ball. Trying him in defence is destined to fail. He's spent his whole career playing one role and the skills learnt in that position do not transfer well to other positions. He's in the conversation for the most one dimensional player in the AFL.

Looked good in that vfl final

Looked good in the last quarter of that VFL final.

He's done that a couple of times this year, but failed to go on with it.

Obviously, he doesn't get the chance again this year, but let's not get sucked in so easily. Again...

Another huge blunder by our list management group with Mayne and you can write a novel of our screw ups in recent years .Mayne ,Wells,Greenwood,White,,Lynch,Young and not recruiting key positional players.
Certantly the list management team and the desicion makers should be the first to get the sack before anyone else.
Agree with most people here like it or not Mayne will be at Collingwood at least for the next couple of years which good on him he got a nice fat juicy contract , fingers should be pointed to the idiots that signed him.

Actually he did have a reasonably successful stint in the Freo backline. Not a huge success like Liam Jones or Howe but was regarded as serviceable. Doesn't hurt to try him there - he's contracted, I'd rather try something than whinge about how bad the contract is.

I would see Mayne as an insurance policy next year for the case where Cox does not work out as a forward. (I think he will, but we want the cover). Unlike many, I thought he was an OK get last year, and could well have gone on with things if he had managed to get those couple of goals early that he in fact missed. Football careers turn on small things sometimes. Think of Rhyce Shaw and one bad move in a final.
He is no champion, but nor is he inadequate as a player. He has a lot of good traits. We have him on the books, so we need to look for thte best value we can get from him. Carping about the decision to recruit him gains nothing.
