He could kick 34-40 goals in the VFL
How many goals did he kick in the VFL this year?
20, from 18 games, four of which where he registered donuts...

Yep a whopping tally and definitely see why people are saying he will kick 40 next year in the AFL against better opposition...they have a solid argument there.
Or Ty VickeryLuckiest player in the AFL.

Let's not be too logical.I was all for recruiting Mayne last year when I thought we were getting him on a minimal contract as a FA. When I heard we were offering decent money over 4 years I was mystified. I thought he offered nothing over Blair and that turned out to be right.
But that's done now. We can't get out of paying him, so he might as well be on our list and being as well supported to contribute something back as is possible.
someone suggested on here (can't be bothered going through the pages) that he be trialled down back next season.
We've got him for 3 more years like it or not, no harm in trying this I reckon. If he's quick and is a reasonable kick then I can't see why he couldn't do it. If Liam Jones can transfer successfully then Maybe should be able to become a decent small defender.
It's his lack of pace that counts against him. Could likely live with it if he was 195cm.
I never wanted him recruited but I honestly feel for the bloke who has done nothing wrong. Was offered a contract, accepted, not really what the club needed. Best for all if we all move on. Try to find him a new home, even if it means we're paying the lion's share of his contract, draft a kid with potential in his spot. Even if we can't find a home for him we'd be better off trying a kid in 2018.
Blair is quicker and more agile, a better crumber, a better ball winner and a better though traffic. If Jarryd Blair can get games as a small pressure player then surely Mayne is more equipped to play than Blair. He's a better mark and generally kicks the ball better. I wouldn't write off a miraculous turnaround from Mayne but he must be given an extended run before it's too late and we will be wondering what ever happened. A forward line with him contributing on the scoreboard is going to benefit the side no ends, and I wonder how he will be seen when he does start to play well.
Looked good in that vfl final

Mayne is undersized, has no experience in defence and isn't a particularly quick thinker when he's got the ball. Trying him in defence is destined to fail. He's spent his whole career playing one role and the skills learnt in that position do not transfer well to other positions. He's in the conversation for the most one dimensional player in the AFL.
