So this got lost in the fast moving trade thread but what happens if we sign a UFA/RFA now? supposedly the AFL says the net value will downgrade our compo pick right? but we have traded 23 to Hawthorn already so is that like a workaround for the system that you can trade your picks before they are downgraded when signing free agents?

You would think they have thought about this and maybe made the clubs sign something when trading the compo that says we cannot get any free agents but this is the AFL we are talking about so who knows what actually would happen

No, they simply would not recognise the transfer of the Free Agent once you have been compensated for losing one.

They are no longer FA or UFA as that trade phase is completed . They can now become Delisted FA, and there are no restrictions about recruiting them.

Nah that post was from before the period ended, the ruling would be that you wouldn't be allowed to sign a RFA/UFA if you already traded out your compo pick from losing an RFA/UFA

This is an interesting read when it comes to the bit about Mayne. Gubby Allan offered Mayne 4yrs at $500000 while Hines was going to offer 3 yrs at $380000.

Some questions are being asked at the Pies it seems.

Boy did Freo luck out.

Looks like the Pies have finally read all the facebook comments what a spud this guy is.

Bad enough giving up a 2nd rounder for him, but to pay him $2m is even worse.

They didn't give anything up for him - we got our 2nd rounder as a compo pick. Every club paid equally for it (i.e all clubs' picks after 22 went up one spot)

Club's don't own compensation picks in the first place so can't 'give them up' and $2m is only pocket change at the big end of town eh!

So after last years shitblokedness, it's fair to say GWS are actually good blokes? Amazeballs McCarthy trade and now Gubby's generous Mayney deal. Thanks GWS - we owe you big time

I overlooked the news that Mayney may return to us for a coaching role. I was always a fan of his high-pressure attack role, especially at the height of his goal accuracy. Was sorry to see him go at the time. Against the odds, tt was great to see him turn things around and do well at Collingwood, even almost win the granny in '18 against the scum. All the best to him!

Chris Mayne in talks with Fremantle Dockers about assistant coaching role with a twist

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Mayne has started talks with Fremantle about a return to the club in a assistant coaching role with a twist.

Mayne called time on his 14-season AFL career at Collingwood and Fremantle this week, saying “the time is right, personally and professionally” for him.

The West Australian understands the 32-year-old, who has aspirations to become a senior AFL coach, is a strong chance to end up back at Fremantle as a player-development coach.

Discussions have been around the potential of combining coaching duties with playing for the Dockers’ WAFL affiliate Peel Thunder, where he will help the development of the young AFL-listed players.

Mayne has made no secret about wanting to return to his home State, with his wife Brittany and two young children, after he finishes up at Collingwood at season’s end.

He also hinted that his playing days weren’t totally over, saying he wanted to “continue trying to get a kick at some level next year”.

“From a family perspective, Britt and I have two young children and we want them to settle and share more time with our families in Perth,” Mayne said in a club statement this week.

“From a football perspective, I don’t feel that I can squeeze much more out of myself. “I still love the game and want to continue trying to get a kick at some level next year but at the highest level I recognise it’s getting tougher, not easier.”

Mayne has played 245 games to date, 172 at Fremantle and the last 73 at the Magpies including a grand final appearance for both clubs in 2013 and 2018 respectively.

He was drafted to the Dockers from Perth with pick 40 in the 2007 national draft and made his debut in round two the following year.

West Coast and Mayne’s original WAFL club have also enquired about his services, but Fremantle appear to be the front-runners at this stage.

Mayne has a good relationship with Dockers coach Justin Longmuir, with the pair at Collingwood together for two seasons when Longmuir was their defensive assistant.

He spoke highly of Longmuir’s influence at the Magpies. “He was really good to me because he knew probably my value to be able to play a role through wing and half-back,” Mayne told SportFM 91.3.

Mayne also played alongside the club’s executive general manager football Peter Bell during his early days at Fremantle.

“I loved my time at Fremantle, the club knows how much love I have for the club given that I’m a life member there and they allowed me to start my journey there,” Mayne said.

I think there is a points system that WAFL teams have to be under and when they pick up ex-AFL players who haven't previously play for their club - its the most expensive acquisition - but I'm not sure how it works with an AFL aligned club like Peel. Probably harsher restrictions.

I heard ex-eagle Schofield say the other week that he wasn't going to play on in the WAF after a back injury put him out a month or so ago - so maybe that's a way that Peel can fit Mayne into their list.

*Absolutely* the *exact* type of person Freo should have on board mentoring and coaching. Passion and professionalism. Huge admiration for him and in fact all quiet achievers like him.
In fact I reckon him coming to the above type of role is bigger news than that other bloke going. What was his name again? I forget.
