All mentioned had long & outstanding AFL playing careers

...

I'm very confident Craig will appoint the best people for the job...
The fact that the people you mentioned had outstanding playing careers is relevant how to them being a good coach? I hope your not suggesting that being a great player = being a great coach, because it doesn't quite work like that! Otherwise, we would have the likes of Gary Ablett Snr, Tony Lockett, etc as the best coaches in the business.

Very true Kane. Great footballer does not mean great coach. Very different skills required.

Just getting back to the OP - McDermott just opens his mouth and lets the wind blow his tongue around. A few weeks ago he was saying the Crows needed to turn over 10-15 player, and more recently (If I recall correctly) he was saying you don't want to turn over too many in one year. His assessment of assistant coaching options has no logic or analysis behind it, it's just a list of almost every available ex-SANFL coach or player from Jonas to Mcintosh.

I wouldn't mind just disagreeing with what he says, if it seemed he had put some thought into it - as it is, he just frustrates me because I work for a living and he gets paid to write stuff that I could write.

The Ragvertiser and Mail pay this guy way too much.

McDermott has been knocked about one too many times on the footy field. Which might be part fo the reason for the crap that he continues to write.

IMO you are letting your anti-Port mentality get in the way of analysing the prospective candidates.
You can add me to that list also!
putting a port fella in charge of the Bays ruined it for me and I have no desire whatsoever to have any port people involved with the Crows.(i even have trouble with some of our players that have come through the port maggies, Sorry stiffy but its true)
I don't follow them in this years finals either!!! why? BECAUSE THEY ARE PORT!

BTW stephen wont take the job even if its offered.(and it wont be)

Club loyalty is diasappearing both at player, coaching, and administrative level - reason: MONEY.

If you remain trapped in the "old"era of only drafting Sth Aust, or only appointing Crows players in admin/coaching roles we will be left behind in this professional competition.

#1 rule - pick the best available, if he is a Power player, official or bootstudder, so be it.

Couldn't have said it better.

jc67, build a bridge and get over it. Its 21st century and loyalty and passion are still very much needed BUT if you let it cloud your judgment then you will be a celler dweller for ever.

Time to move on. You pick the best available and if they happen to be from Port then so be it.

Phew.

Had me worried there for a while:p;)
Being Victorian (ex SA) allows me to be more objective, rather than fish bowl environment of SA and KG and boys.

You really do see it from a differing perspective ;)

And far better too !!!

Rehn, Bickley, McGuiness,Hart,McDermott,Ashcroft,Scotty Burns,Mathew Knights,Shaun Hart all have more to offer potentially than Williams & would bring the very latest views on oppostion tactics & methods, without the massive COI that Williams has.

What about Jan Stirling - is she in the running? Crows ambassador K G Cunningham dropped the rumour recently about her joining Craigy as one of his assistants in 2005.

Anyone else heard that one?

As a Bays supporter Bone was one of my favourite players as a kid, but ever since he has taken up coaching, then onto the media he has lost the plot. Geez, I hope Ch9 find a better replacement for next year's footy segments.

Yeah, that's the rumour - her or Marg Angove, I think.

Being as objective as I can - if someone can offer the right set of skills for a role, why not? On the other hand, there's only so many seats in the coaching box and you'd have to make a bloody good case to convince me that Stirling or Angove are offering something that an experienced football person can't. Charlie Walsh on the bench as motivator is one thing - a basketball or netball coach in the box is another.

Can get pretty fierce on the basketball/netball court, so perhaps they are going to toughen players up for next year...

He is following the KG school of how to create a media career - be contraversial.
Didn't Naley attend the same school :o

It's one thing to be controversial, but it's quite another to be a complete tosser with numerous backflips.

Only room in Adelaide for one clown though
Unfortunately 5AA alone has more than 1 clown. What's the terminology for more than 1 clown?
