And assaulting a guy with his hands up.

Everywhere else in the country, people were allowed to march, and have quietly dispersed without incident. This is what Minns' wanted though because the bridge protest bruised his ego.

NSW Labor (and Police) again showing themselves to be the most rotten in the country. Absolutely sackable to be bringing MAGA rubbish to this country.

Labor and Liberal, just like Democrats and Republicans in the States are both two cheeks of the same zionist behind.

yeah some nasty footage coming out of NSW

there were clashes in Melbourne with people being pepper sprayed and some arrests but I've not seen footage just reports

doesn't sound like anything like what we've seen in NSW today which isn't surprising

today is only day one too

Very hard to fathom what the police strategy was. Crowds were always going to gather tonight around Town Hall regardless of the court verdict. The area was already blocked to traffic. Making a show of trying to “move people on” in that context was pointless and thuggish. They should have been trying to keep everyone safe, not throwing a tantrum.

their strategy is to try and stop people from coming the rest of the week

this was meant to discourage people

that's NSW cops thru and thru tho.

Its more likely to radicalise people.
that doesn't bother them

budget increase

plus more violence justifies their violence when the media and politicians are behind them

and they can point to the radicalised people as a threat to the rest of the country as reason to further increase draconian laws to "protect them"

I was there at the start of the rally at 5:30, but had to leave early at 6pm to get to Newtown by 6:30pm.

I work over the road from the Town Hall and can see it from my office window, so saw from around 2:30pm hundreds of police everywhere. When I arrived at Town Hall for the protest, because it was designated as an "event" they had some absurd crowd control measures that meant I needed to loop around the back of the Town Hall to get into the square next to it. It was very full, but peaceful and spirits were good.

When I left early I saw the police had blocked off anyone else entering the area around the Town Hall. I could see empty parts fenced off that people couldn't get to as I walked to the station on the footpath. Because people couldn't get in, there were hundreds of people and growing up Bathurst St who were standing around unable to get in. When I got to the train station it was closed off, and the police officer blocking the entrance I asked about transport to was a bit of a prick in his unhelpfulness.

It seems the issues then became this growing swell of people outside the protest area who, by law, weren't allowed to march, combined with the fact that when people went to leave after the speeches there was nowhere to go. Perhaps this could've been solved with allowing a march, but no.

I'm sure the response of Minns and the commercial media will be that there were a bunch of hoodlums who the brave police put into place, but really, his stated aim for containing this has proven an enormous failure, and the claim that this visit is some unifying moment of post-Bondi cohesion for the country, putting an end to these 2+ years of division, has been shown to be the bullshit that it always was. Disgraceful.

What a bunch of ****ing cowards.

They make it very easy to be cynical about their motivations.

I got Dark Knight Rises and American History X flashbacks from the footage I've seen of the police brutality last night. It's scandalous, these coppers are unhinged! Coppers are saying the videos lack context, what a load of shite!

he looks like a guy very much in damage control (and from a distance he looks like hes struggling with it)

all his own doing so .........
It would be so easy to take the heat out of the situation by not simply lying, bald facedly to the public and trying to blame protesters.

Sure the media would happily give him a leg up normally, but with that much footage and damning accounts from actual members of parliament who were on site, it's hard to try and manufacture consent and not have the public absolutely blow up.

The "don't believe your lying eyes" from both Minns and NSWpol responding to questions on the footage is such a political error, beyond being a gross but expected moral failing. Wonder if they'll keep making it worse.

Just spotted Minns' comments on the Today show this morning (via Reddit). To say that he is a little tone deaf would be an understatement. It's incredible that he's hosting Herzog in the first place but to publicly back police using excessive force on citizens shows that he is not fit for the role of Premier.
