Lots of threads and posts here on our performance pointing fingers at weak efforts, poor coaching, poor drafting, poor everything.

What about our Captain? Is he doing enough on field to lead the team? Is he setting the example for others to follow?

I'm not sure he is.

Look it's easy to go on a shooting spree after a massive loss, but if we're conducting the review that the coaching staff won't, I'm suggesting we critique the Captain.

I dont doubt his desire and intensity. From the very beginning of his career he has always been a great model of a footballer.

Being a good kick will always allow a player to stand out but he has limitations in regards to his ability to really impart himself on a game.

Not his fault that he is our best option for captain. Im sure he would be happier in a team where he was further down the pecking order where he could play his natural game around game breakers without critisism.

Something about his performance this year is just not up to last year. I can't put my finger on it but he just doesn't seem to have the same desperation and selflessness for me

Houli is now playing his role ,he should IMO playing within our midfield . It's been very evident the last two weeks sides have put alot of time into closing
the space either of them have when they have the Footy .

Chris needs to shut up with the stupid comments such as "being impatient with the tigers". If you're so impatient Chris then do something about it. You were almost invisible against carlton. Too much talk not enought action at this football club.

He has been very average all year. I think a move into the midfield could be a go...even as a tagger who can hurt the other way as Houli has replaced him.

Perhaps you should read the article. The headline is sensationalist, Newman never actually said that

Blame has to start at the top.

All his career Newman has escaped criticism for a massive amount of anonymous games, while fringe players get torched for far less heinous crimes - we're talking about a captain who never got fit enough to work himself into the game when he's not getting it on a silver platter in Bowden country down back. He's a shorter Jason Cloke.

Good bloke or not, Newman as a footballer is an appalling role model...a bloke who came into the game with one good skill and many deficiencies, and will leave the game with one good skill and many deficiencies - and no more able to properly run out a match now than he was when he first arrived at the club.

He came through in an era where you could get away with being anonymous, selfish, and largely useless, because others were worse more often and importantly, far more visible being worse.

Newman's good reputation as a footballer relies heavily on the fact that people 'don't remember him doing anything too bad' when we lose. They forget that's because he did nothing and was anonymous - yet again.

Captain's in any sport at any level aren't supposed to be anonymous 16+ weeks a year.

I don't care what he said. I'm sick of the verbal crap this club spruiks to the media.

Just shut up and get the job done. That's all we want.
spot on and its not as if these players captains especially arent schooled in what to look out for in a line of questioning by journos, simply talking abt that rubbish in the lead up to a massive game is PR suicide. Stupid

Still don't know what that has to do with this article
It was a story on Newman being the current AFL player with the most games having not played a final.

Ok, so who gives a stuff? Why does he need to speak about it? Did his performance on saturday go any way towards addressing it? I just think focus and energy is being wasted on things which are irrellevant. I couldn't give a rats arse how many games newman has played without finals. It's not about chris newman.

He was interviewed very briefly in an obligatory interview that a club captain cannot avoid. Simply said that he was getting impatient in regards to finals.

I want to know that these players are unsatisfied without playing finals and not content to retire financially secure and able to visit the clubs bubble in the future where legends are blokes who have hardly tasted finals.

I see Jack Riewoldt on the footy show and think to myself, Play a final first and then sit next to Jonothan Brown on the footy show. Newman is a shrinking violet next to him. In Reiwoldt I see a bloke more likely to make it about himself.

Cant help what the media focus on. If they want that answer then there are questions where you cannot avoid that type of answer.

BTW - If or when we make finals, I hope that someone else is ready to take over as he is not the man who stands up in these games. I think people are confusing the fact that he does not really impart himself on big games with his off field handling of captaincy. The first I find flat and uninspiring, the second is impeccable.

Ever thought that a jounalist decided to ask him about it?
It's not exactly the type of puff piece that the club would want to put out
Discussing our history of failure for so long, yeah I can see why the club would want to put that out

I'd make Cotch captain next season. A young leader for a young team to develope together down a different path than where we've been.

Newman has been ok but would prefer someone who has more of an impact on the game.

it seems to me he just isnt a defender. gets mauled by the small and tall forwards. can use the footy so i reckon maybe into the midfield and tagging maybe the way to go

These two quotes sum up my problem with him.

I don't know what he's like as a bloke, nor do I care about the 'impatient' article, but he seems unable to lead by example on the field. Yesterday we we're crying out for someone to stand up and be counted, and he was nowhere to be seen. That's not good enough from a Captain.
