Why is Jaques considered next in line for an opening spot when this guy is making over double the amount of runs this season? Rogers has 638 and Jaques has 297. Seems odd. Thoughts?

First Class: 8646 runs @ 58.02
List A: 3820 runs @ 43.40

Nothing to do with NSW, he's a gun batsman. Plus he's only 27.

Of course they have. But to the many observers there is often a perceived focus on players from NSW ahead of a similarly credentialled player from another state. FWIW I agree with you about Jaques though.

Over his career Jaques has shown himself to be the better batsman and can be more dangerous. Rogers has done well this season though and is only a year or two older than Jaques.

Rogers has been underrated and consistently scoring runs for seasons, he should be the very natural replacement for one of Langer and Hayden

As for the perceived focus on NSW players - it's there. Why else would the selectors pick Michael Clarke for test matches when he had a FC average of under 40 at the time? OK, he did well so that one paid off - but there have been far more credentialed players from other states who either had to wait a helluva lot longer to get picked or didn't get picked at all.

NSW players in the past have seemingly been picked on potential, while others have to have years and years of more-than-solid results before they're picked (Michael Hussey anyone??)

Jacques has been consistent over a number of seasons. He deserves his chance.

If Rogers is good enough over multiple seasons he'll get his chance too.

You also have the consider the pitch conditions at WACA this year also. Pretty handy home ground for an opening batsman trying to make a name for himself.

Rogers hasn't just come about this year - he's been scoring runs for WA longer than Jaques has been plying his trade in Sydney.

7000+ FC runs @ an average that's over 50 (after the conclusion of today's match).

As for the grounds, I'd think it would be easier to score runs at the SCG and North Sydney with the size of their boundaries.

put it this way, if langer or hayden were to get injured i reckon the selectors would go for jaques right now as the replacement

all rogers has to do is keep making runs and all a sudden things could change if jaques struggles like he has in the past week

Maybe Jaques isn't the automatic replacement for Langer or Hayden that many assume he is.

Rogers is having an outstanding season (638 runs at 91) and has an excellent FC record.

Maybe Jaques and Rogers will get their chances at roughly the same time - can't see Langer or Hayden sticking around much longer after one of them goes.

Rogers is 29 and has red hair, so that might keep Jaques' nose in front.

Not sure of Rogers's stats over the past few seasons but he's had at least 2 good seasons out of the past 3 and is on fire this season. While Jaques is probably ahead in the selectors' minds, Rogers is making runs at the right time (which seems to be important following Voges' shock selection)

i still think the selectors arent a fan of Jaques' technique. i've mentioned it heaps and everyone seems to laugh at it. he has a crap technique and will be found out in no time, Rogers has a very solid technique a bit like JL.

So he is 93 not out overnight which takes his season tally to 731 runs from 8 digs @ 104.4, 6 of his 8 innigns are over 50 runs.

Jaques has 355 runs from 10 digs @ 35.50.

One would imagine Rogers has now overtaken Jaques for the next opening spot.

Bevan holds the record of 1,461 from 2004-05....
At the half way point (with potentially one more innings in this match, though that's looking unlikely) he is certainly on track.

I agree that he has to be first cab off the rank for an opening spot - Jaques started the season well, but his last 6 weeks or so have been fairly ordinary.
