Toast Chris Scott

I think the best thing i can say about Chris Scott is that he stuck to his word. He said at the start of the year players wouldn't be playing because of their past success but that the team would be chosen each week on players form.

He stuck to this even if it meant the tough call in sidelining Mooney and Milburn for the Grand Final. I'm sure many coaches at AFL level wouldn't be able to do that and i know i wouldn't have been able to if i was in his position. He did the best thing for the team and deserves a lot of credit for making the hard calls.

And most importantly he loves and respects the player. Who wouldn't do their best for a boss like this, always talking you up, praising, acknowledging, never blaming.
Our players must feel like magic after years of a mean nasty boss.

And to think he ran a close second to Primus for the Port job....

I picture him waking up in the night in a sweat, having dreamt that he was both in Adelaide and Ports coach, and then the euphoria that it was all a nightmare and that he indeed become a premiership coach.

Wow thats weird to say, Chris Scott; premiership coach. Weird, but Great.

Seriously, he have to be the most popular person in the city of Geelong right now. Even opposition supporters who live in Geelong would realise the financial bonus a premiership brings to the city and the flow on effects from it.

Chris Scott, premiership coach. Love it all ready.

Loved reading the earlier posts on Scotty! I really enjoy listening to both brothers talking about footy and their teams. Very intelligent bros. Of all those who have spoken about the win on Sat, it was Chris I was looking forward to hearing from the most, a bloke who stands up and genuinely appreciates the position he finds himself in. Has brought a new flavor to a team who many thought didn't have another flag in them. I am so grateful that the Cats snapped him up!

mooney's words on him during the ch 10 pre-match showed just how highly he is rated...

Just love the guy's passion for the club, players and supporters after only being at the club for a short period...

I'd love to see a compilation of all the coaches' box footage during the game and his reactions on the boundary line in the last five minutes (I am untalented and have no idea how to make compilation vids). Some classic facial expressions which mirrored what we all were feeling. I just love the man. He was so self-deprecating in his post match interviews, but he really was a Godsend this year, and you can see how much the players rate him. Thank you to Port Adelaide for not hiring him!

Saw it at the game when it happened, saw it again when I watched the replay of the coverage.

That final few minutes, the camera panned to Chris Scott. When he noticed that his face was on the big screen, let out a big cheer and raised his hands up. That stuff sends chills down my spine!

Congratulations to Chris Scott. Well done!

Happy Anniversary

Exactly one year ago today Geelong announced Chris Scott as its new senior coach. Twelve months and a premiership on, it is obvious the Cats decision makers knew what they were doing and made an inspired choice.

But love this quote from the end....

Scott was true to his word in every way, and the Geelong Football Club was the winner. Today is certainly a happy anniversary.

I disagree purely on the basis that Primus was an inside voice; he brings no perspective to a myopic club, is probably using the bones of Choco's gameplan and most likely retained the same preseason training outline. I'm not saying Scott would have made them an instant top-4, but he'd definitely have done his best to revive the old guys on their list, and given them maybe 2-3 wins more than what they have now.

Funny that you mention how Primus is an inside voice at Port Adelaide, and brings no perspective to a myopic club.

I heard that part of the reason that Geelong appointed Chris Scott, over Brenton Sanderson or Ken Hinkley, is because he was an "outsider".

I have noticed that our last few coaching appointments (Blight, Ayres, Thompson and Scott) are all from outside and all are dual premiership players during dynasties.

I was at the B&F and when Scotty got on stage to announce the Coaches Award winner, the crowd gave him a lengthy standing ovation, and when he gestured for it to stop, it continued.

He was left very overwhelmed, as evidenced by the somewhat embarrassed smile on his face, but you could tell he was well aware of the high regard the Geelong faithful now hold him in.

Just an inspired choice. I was thinking probably Hinkley at the time but when Scotty got the gig I couldn't be happier. Tough as cheap steak on the field but very well spoken and respected off the field. Cookie is the master, you can't question his choices.

You could tell that there was instant respect from the playing group as well.

Does remind me a little of Moons too. Has that touch of "I am calm now but may just snap you in half if you look at me the wrong way" about him. Love the passion too, like big Cam he wears his heart on his sleeve and rides out most games in a similar manor to us passionate cats fans. When he pumuped his firsts victoriously in that last qtr it just felt like he was the bloke next to you that knew the ultimate victory was in the bag.

We haven't heard much from CS this year, but every time he is interviewed , I am so impressed by his respectful , knowledgable replies, and the way he thinks about what he wants to say.

Today's interview was classic. When asked about Hawks and Pies being all the rage as favourites this year, his reply was stunningly clever and appropriate. Wish I had the ability to download, or whatever you people do, the interview. Sure somebody will.

Under the radar...I love it, and so does he it appears.

And for that specific bit about the Pies & Hawks:

Sorry to intrude on your board, just interested in your opinions on Scotty as a coach compared to Bomber?

I'm a huge fan of Chris Scott, goes about things the right way and seems like a great guy. What do most cat fans feel about him compared to how they feel/felt about Bomber Thompson when coaching?

Both premiership coaches but seem to be very different people.

Bomber set things up (on field). Scott has the task of maintaining the high standards. So far so good!

I'm not sure what Bomber brought to the table as a coach, but 2 flags says something clicked. But as men, CS typifies everything I respect. As a coach , so far,he seems to have it together. After 2011, could he achieve anything more? Back to back with a win against Hawks in 2012 GF would be sweet.

Bomber,?? Glad he came, and then glad he left when he did. He was right for us when he arrived. Geelong has got it right with both these appointments.

As a coach, he is difficult to classify like another.

He has the respect of his players as they all seem to rave about how he came in and took over but not in a way that was destructive... more constructive..

He can be a players coach in that he is so soon from the game that there is a relatable level of what he is asking them to do.

He is unassuming in his approach but clearly deliberate in what he does

Above all, the players buy into what he is doing.

Kind of a nicer version of Bill Bilicheck from the Patriots....

He doesn't play to the media and buy into the games - he is always very concise and considered with his answers but oft aloof at the same time.

He even allows the hype to wash away from him and focus on others ( see Hawks and pies) with respect to them.. ultimately allowing less pressure externally and allowing the pressure for performance etc to be created and controlled from within..

Great hire and we could be witnessing the best Geelong coach in recent history at work....

Go Catters...

Looks to me he is again looking for the Empty Bandwagon . As GW put it last year

A Season To Remember
Gerard Whately

In US politics there's a phenomenon called the Lonely Landslide. The President that sweeps to the White House but doesn't carry his party to Congress.

In Aussie Rules the equivalent is the Empty Bandwagon. The team that keeps on winning without ever carrying public opinion or acclaim.
This was Geelong of 2011 - the Empty Bandwagon.

The night after I first floated this theory on television prior to the halfway mark of the season the coach politely but firmly asked that I refrain from drawing further attention to it.
At a more intimate gathering in the week of Round 15 I pressed my belief that Geelong was the best team in the competition. The President smiled and gently rebuked that sentiment stating the official position of the Club was that it was perhaps the third best team.
And thus the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

I think CS is more than happy with the Hawks and the Pies having the front running. I suspect if was the jock on Black Caviar he would be quite happy to let the others have the lead till the last 100. He comes from Brisbane and they never finished top. In golf - you drive for show and putt for dough and in footy, September is where the putting is done !!

What a great line, and what a great article.
I'm a big fan of Gerard Whateley.

Great line from a great movie . Im sure Kiaiser Soze could hold down a position on the Wing for us.

Occasionally I feel I have been able to put a word together in a reasonable manor. Then I read something he has writen Id realise how crap i am. He is a gun and he follows the Cats. Lucky for us.
