Mostly agree with that but in the era of the small quick forward and huge amounts of space being created in forward halves I think speed in a modern defender is increasingly becoming more important.
Maybe. I'd prefer the speed to be utilised in closing down opponents. Fast ball movement out of defence by foot beats running it out ten times out of ten.

U cannot be cereal. Selwood was ordinary and had pretty well no impact on the game. Nothing to do with 'high standards'. Its about getting a kick and making a difference, and being a leader-all things he generally does very well. He didn't yesterday. Bartel was calm and solid all game. Worked hard. Didn't lose his head once, made sound choices, showed good skills. As he has all this year after a couple of average years. Great to see.
Yep, I'm serious.

Bartel is severely overrated around these parts, as is most of our side.

Selwood in part prevented a 10 goal loss in the last half.

Again agree, but my reference to speed wasn't so much to do with running it out rather than being able to run back in time to defend.

The backline is in shambles, throwing Bartel back there just compounds the problem.

Bartel taking marks might look nice on his stat sheet but we just have no run and carry.

Offensively it is terrible, the ball just gets stuck there then it gets chipped around and turned over down the line with the inevitable 50/50 contests.

You just cant have 4 Key position defenders, Mackie, Bartel and Enright. It's just not going to deliver a premiership.

Need to take at least 2 of them out and replace them with younger faster players with good disposal.

I would use 2 of Guthrie, Ruggles, Cowan or Lang, possibly even Duncan.

Get the structures right and the team would be more consistent.

Yeah in 2011 we had a slow defence but the game was much slower then too and there were hardly any goals being scored out the back in the fashion they are now. A good defence now has to be agile and quick to cope with and protect the inevitable out the back type situations that are created more and more these days rather than big bodied, and plodding like defences of the past.
Hawthorns back 6 in last years GF

Stratton Lake Frawly
Birchial Gibson Burgoyne

That's a slow defence .

Your living in the old days were defence was all about a sides back 6 . Today defending is all about 18 players , not 6.

We were let down by the mids yesterday not the defence.

The same defence (well mostly... Odd change here or there) when we put a 100+ points past Hawthorn, Adelaide and West Coast.

Birchall is fast mate. Very fast.
Burgoyne is also fast. He has multiple gears.
Stratton, Duryea and Gibson are three others who are certainly not classified as 'slow'.

You do watch Hawthorn play don't you?

Frawley is another one. Believe it or not but he'd be quicker than young Kolodjashnij.

Work rate, hardness at the ball, pressure and turnovers are what lost us the last two games.

We look tired and disinterested. I read a stat where Geelong average the fewest rotations a game which could have a small part to play.

Some player Jim. Simultaneously underrated and overrated!

I guess the club's wrong too :D You might have a question for Official Cats now ;)

Neither of which is purely or mainly a problem for the defence. Our forward 50 pressure is seriously lacking and we've fallen away in the clearances.

The rotations must be by design. That can't be a coincidence, there'll be some logic behind it somewhere... Another question for Official Cats ;)

If the club continue to lie about Mitch Clark and other areas what makes you think I wish to ask them any further questions?

Bobby is this as reliable as when you said Cady wanted to go to North because posters on the North board said so ?

Birchall is fast but that's it,Burgoyne is not fast anymore. No Frawley is not faster than Kolo and Stratton and Gibson are no faster than Mackie and Enright .

In fact none of our back 6 are actually slow , sure not a lot of speed but none of them are slow.

Like I said above defending is 18 man effort in todays game.

Pretty fast defence with good disposal, compared to ours

Lonergan --> slow and cant kick
Taylor --> fairly slow, good kick
Henderson --> fairly slow, average kick
Mackie --> fairly slow, very good kick
Bartel --> slow, cant kick
Enright --> fairly slow, average kick
Kolo --> fairly slow, average kick

we might be the best in the comp when the high ball comes in but when our midfield is getting soundly beat and the opposition has time to hit up targets we get smashed, even worse is when they apply a lot of pressure when we try get it out of defence

i'd rather we lost a bit of advantage when the high ball comes and have a better ability to get the ball out of defence easier

Chris doesn't seem like he can coach us to a premiership. doesn't have "it"

(yes i know he already has but anyone could have coached that side to a premiership)

Current midfield woes is more of a concern at the moment for me than our backline. But our 'plan' from kick-ins and just in general getting the ball from deep in the back pockets up forward is atrocious. Not sure if there's not enough movement up the ground or what leads to it, but if we have the ball deep in defence it just generally stays stuck there and we have no easy outlets. Need to string easy passes together rather than just attempting to hack it out to the boundary every time.
