Roast Chris Yarran

I think they are actually all very different to be honest.

Garlett - while an awesome crumber, is actually also covering an awful lot of ground and spending quality minutes in the middle.

Eddie - Strictly a forward pocket for mine, but doesn't mind leading up a bit, and is also a good centre clearance guy.

Yarran - I see him as more of a lead up Half Forward/Wing, isn't even close to Jeff/Eddie at getting to the loose ball in the forward line. Is actually very good overhead, just not put in the situation enough.
Agreed. Their games are totally different, but it would take years of watching them to really be able to see the nuances of their football - which is fair enough, and no crack at Show Some Fight.

I was sitting in the opposite pocket from where the kick was taken, but it seemed like the ball had to go over that contest by a good 15 metres. Henderson was between a rock and a hard place, though, so you can't be critical.

EDIT - I've just watched the replay, and Yarran was in the contest the whole way, but made a very, very poor decision.

Nevertheless, Yarran is not, and should never be a sub. He is a touch player that will stay quiet for periods of games but can turn games on their head and catch fire. Giving him a quarter to work in, especially when the pressure is that immense, is just foreshadowing disaster.

I still think that the error for Lucas was super critical in a low scoring game. We got burnt on from kick-ins far too easily, as well.

I still can't believe how much our judgement suffers in tight contests. How many times did we sit it on Kreuzer's head from deep in defence despite the far superior aerialist Ryder being in the vicinity? There's nothing wrong with putting it on Brock's head if he's better overhead than his opponent.

Timing, it was the timing when Lucas missed, it would have stalled their momentum.

It was the easiest miss of the night.

Other wise I thought Kane was good.

They erred with the sub, yarran as a sub was stupid rwice this ear they've stuffed it up, mclean v pies.

When the game was in balaln e, judd, murphy and gibbs where good...maybe the coaching staff may need to look at howmthey coached because i think this is where it was lost and between our ears
regardless of how many goals and touches he gets they will always be offset by his continuous missed tackles. I reckon everygame he plays he misses at least 4 of what should be standard tackles. really hurt us last night.

Kane tackled Heppell hard right before Crameri marked Zaharakis's kick in the last quarter. Isn't cooked like the haters want to believe. Criticism reminds me of the bake Robinson was getting before he received AFLCA votes against Brisbane and Port. Thank God the coaches see it differently.

Your continual efforts to retro-fit skills to a player completely stymies any real current assessment of their progress.
What does that even mean?

:p

I guess it's unfair to ask why Melksham and Myers were free inside 50.

The continual amnesia of supporters adds nothing to discussions about players. See it all the time.

I heard a remark on 3AW that alluded to a 'reason' why Yarran was the sub last night and then missed the follow up.

Did anyone hear it ? Sounded like Mike Sheahan was hinting at a discipline issue ???

Every small sucked tonight with the Bombers flooding back and denying them space.

I thought Garlett gets a pass mark for last nights game, aside from th brain fade in the 1st quarter.
He had 15 touches and 10 marks. His run down the members wing in the second quarter was sensational.

Garlett was good but does need to work on his set shot kicking and kicking penetration from 40+ metres.

Seems to not have enough momentum in his long distance routine to punch through the ball, something I have noticed at times over the past 2 to 3 years.

I think Malthouse is trying to push Yarran to be in the top 20 of AFL players that he can be and I think making him sub last night was a test to see if Yarran was mentally tough enough to accept being given the green vest and when told to come on he'd give the team 100% commitment.... Yarran failed that test badly and Malthouse will need to drop him...

Article today how GWS is seriously considering trading their number 1 pick... I would offer up Yarran in a package with an Ellard or Hampson or something like that..l we have an abundance of good smalls in Armfield, betts, garlett, Buckley and menzell... There are some great young forwards in the draft and that number 1 pick will be valuable

And second.

Passage of play where he marks and looks up the line, sees a 2 on 1 so tries to switch the play, it's not on so he comes back by which time we have a player who has made space 30m away in the centre corridor, with plenty of room to get and go. Under no pressure he then bombs to the original option by which time it's now a 1 on 3. Was pretty annoyed with that one.

They weren't dangerous inside 50. Similar to the Geelong game where our smalls were denied space, yet they had more room to move when they switched the ball and rebounded out of the backline. They're not locking the ball in. Lucas, Betts, Garlett, Yarran, Armfield, Murphy and Robinson laid eight tackles between them. Garlett didn't lay a tackle.

He's one of the only guys I watch that I WISH would take on his opponent and run around them a bit more.

Bit hard on Yaz there RK.
Yet Judd had 6, Gibbs had 9, McLean had 5, Cachia had 7 and Curnow had 5. Even Kreuzer had 6.
So looking at that, our pressure through the midfield was excellent, yet our small forwards weren't effective in this area. But when you break it down, Betts was well held by Fletcher and looked rusty after being out for 3 weeks, Yaz played one quarter, and Garlett did push up the ground a bit.

Wrong, the kick was supposed to be longer and to advantage, the coach was filthy on the kick...

Question, Lucas running into goal, misses from 3 meters goes up the other end for a goal and then another within 30 secs. Don't you think THIS was the turning point of the match and what ultimately cost us??

NO! the Judd miss just before it was..........

Yeh apparently he cracked it because he was told he was the sub and didnt do any warmups

That's just not true. Saw him warming up in the vest with my own eyes.

MM did suggest in the prematch interview that Yaz was unhappy though, saying that some players think of being sub as if they think of behind dropped. Fairly clear indication that Yaz didn't take it well.

Interesting.. Geez these types of players are difficult. Tough love pisses them off, and cuddling them makes them too comfortable. Malthouse's specialty is getting the best out of these types of players, fingers crossed he does it with Yarran.

Its time for me to stop living in denial, sometimes I think his heart is genuinely just not in it, and doesn't have the mental toughness and work ethic to make it as a top 20 player, and he might be worth trading back to WA. But who knows, he is an enormous talent who just needs to get his shit together.

If you saw that doco that included Yaz (screened 2/3 years ago) it would urge patience. He is a work in progress, has made some good progress and will reward the investor at some point, properly. (That said, if GWS #1 pick was on the table ...)

Yeah, have heard about the doco but never seen it. Poor lad. I really hope he does reward the Blues and himself.
