he looks to be more a Goal kicker than Tambling and more a midfielder than Rioli.

I think Adam Goodes Would be a fair comparison.

From what I've read and seen

Threads such as this just confuse me more and leave me wanting Yarran so much that I'd be pissed off if he's picked before our pick.

You don't want another club getting him.

Then I think about what Hartlett, Hill and Trengove would bring to our side.

I hope it comes down to need if we can't split Yarran and Hartlett.

Yarran could play forward in 2009 and give us another X factor goalkicker to partner up with Betts.

I would love to see Walker, Yarran and Betts working together in the one team.

Walker, Yarran, Judd, Kreuzer, Gibbs and Murphy playing on the ball. :thumbsu:

Carlton are in a beautiful position leading into this draft.

They should have any one of Yarran, Hartlett or Trengove/Hurley available at their pick.

It's just up to them, what kind of player do they want?

Yarran should be a number 2 pick, no doubt! I'd be stoked if he was available at our pick, really it's a coin toss between Hurley and him. This man has some serious ability, he's the Cyril Rioli in this draft.

I will say a quicker version of Chris Lewis back in his heyday.

Yep, that is the comparison I have been making for over a year now. Forget the Burgoyne comparison, he reminds me so much of Lewis, the stalking the ball and ball carrier style, but possibly with a touch more speed and better overhead.

EMMa Quayle was on SEN again today and is willing Yarran to Essendon.

I know you can't have enough talent, but of all the clubs in the competition, I would have thought Essendon are the least likely to need a player like Yarran (type wise, not talent wise obviously).

They've already got the likes of Jetta and Davey running around their forward line, do they need a Yarran?

I would have thought that the biggest weakness for Essendon would be their midfield - and whilst Yarran could end up a phenomenal midfielder, I would have thought it would be a risk that Essendon, in their current position, wouldn't be game enough to take.

I guess we'll see Sat!

The perfect world:

Pick 1- Watts
Pick 2- Natanui
Pick 3- Hill
Pick 4- Hartlett
Pick 5- Rich
Pick 6- Hurley
Pick 7- Ziebell
Pick 8- Vickery
Pick 9- Johnstone/Sidebottom/Swift/Trengove/McKernan
Pick 10- Yarren :D

It could work that way but Yarren will be gone I'm pretty sure. Even if he is available I doubt we'd even take him... we seem to rate McKernan and Trengove very highly. However, you never know, we'll probably pull out something else cause last year we had no clue that Dangerfield would be our pick, everyone was going on about Ebert etc... but I'm more than happy that we took Dangerfield now. Bring on Saturday.

While that is true to some extent, what about if we believe he is the best player we could possibly pick at # 5 and will be a star?

I see no reason why he has to be pigeon holed as a small forward, even early in his career and i'm sure he could play a wing role or even a HBF quite well to begin with.

He could also allow us to rotate Jetta and Davey through the midfield more while still keeping a dangerous crumber and defensive pressure in the forward line.

He could also have stints at Bendigo, assuming he does play seniors early, where he could be used as a true onballer to build his tank and confidence.

I don't see him as any more of a risk than any other player nor is our midfield as much of a concern as many think it is.

Knights has stated he plans on putting Jetta in the midfield once he builds up his fitness. Yarran could also push up the ground and add class.

Personally, I love the thought of having Yarran, Davey, Jetta, Dempsey and Lovett in our team. Good luck trying to catch us!

No need to catch them if they've got no-one to actually win the ball in close in the first place.

Watson is a top clearance player and with Lonergan and McVeigh winning their fair share, it isn't a big issue.

Essendon were actually leading the clearances at certain stages this year, until injuries took over.

Stoppages are also not the only place you get to win the ball either, although it is a major part of the game, especially when playing the Swans.

This is not a concern for Essendon. Watson, Hille, Lonergan, McVeigh and Welsh win plenty of hard ball.

how old is mcveigh out of interest? Will he be there for Essendon's next tilt at the flag?

If not, time to future proof the midfield and pick up Hartlett if he slides, Sidebottom or Ziebell. Even Hill to add real pace through the middle.

Yarran will add a lot, but arguably with Davey, Jetta and Lovett...there is enough X factor on the list.

Also, as tough as Welsh is, he has never been and probably will never be an out and out midfielder. Played a lot of his footy behind the ball in his early years...and came back to either play forward or tag in 08. Seems a bit flat footed to be a real gun inside midfielder. But he is truly tough as nails.

28 at the start of next season, I imagine we will be contending 2010 more likely 2011 so year. If Lloyd and Lucas keep up form they could be there for it. 3 years is a long time in footy.

yep agree McVeigh at 28 has plenty of footy left in him. If anything his best footy has come in the 2nd half of his career.

Agree he has improved with age, but he was always a good player, just didn't get the exposure playing as a small backman, he was rarely beaten.

One of the best aspects of Welsh as a tagger were his efforts at getting the ball out of the middle.

His clearance work, on top of his ability to beat his man, were his two major weapons.

The second game against Collingwood he abosutely smashed the clearances.

yer he was unreal in his game against Collingwood. I've liked him for a long time. But i still would not call him a genuine midfielder...more of a utility. Plays the role the team needs him too. Not going to be a 25+ possession a game player consistently.
