Phantom Draft Chris25's 2009 Phantom Draft

good effort mate :thumbsu: but there have been about 50-60 players delisted & not 1 has been mentioned  reckon after picks 50 there will be a lot delisted & mature aged players.. or some teams will pass :D

I mentioned earlier that I did my draft on the basis that the teams use all their picks, and don't pass. Which obviously wont be the case.

I think a few delisted players will be picked up, but not a heap like some people think. Kite, Hooper, Tenace and Buckley are chances, as well as the obvious ones in Ball, Smith and Macdonald. But I think the PSD and rookie draft will be where most recycled players get picked up. Also, with the change in rules I think most of the mature aged draftees will be rookie picks rather than in the national draft.

So I said I would post my updated phantom draft after there was a clearer picture in regards to how many picks each team would have, and here it is.

A few things to note before reading it....

- I've tried to focus a little more on each clubs needs, so hopefully it will fit what you think your club needs. And it is the extra focus on needs, which has changed my draft from my previous attempt
- I haven't included delisted players, just because there is no way of knowing if they will nominate for the ND or just the PSD
- Before anyone mentions mature aged players, I don't think that many will be picked up in the ND, most will feature in the RD
- It will need a bit of a touch-up after the final list lodgements, but I've done my best to have each club with the right number of selections
- And I was hoping to get in before some of the more seasoned phantom drafters, but it looks like Snoop has beaten me.....

So anyway, enjoy....

First Round

#1 Melbourne - Jack Trengove
There is very little separating Trengove and Scully, and if Melbourne didn't have the next pick too, it woud be near on impossibly to choose between them. Trengove gets the honour of being #1 just because he will probably have more of an impact straight up and will be handle the pressure well.

#2 Melbourne - Tom Scully
It's the obvious pick, and there really doesn't need to be much of an explanation. Melbourne will have an awesome midfield for the next decade.

#3 Richmond - Dustin Martin
Again, it's another obvious selection and Richmond have essentially committed to taking Martin already. I'm sure everybody knows about him by now....

#4 Fremantle - Anthony Morabito

Another obvious pick, and the draft is pretty uneventful at this stage. I'm a big fan of Morabito, and I think he'll definitely realise his potential and become a star player. Whether that is as a genuine midfielder or a CHF, I'm not too sure.

#5 North Melbourne - Ben Cunnington
I rate Cunnington very highly, higher than Martin in fact. He'd easily be one of the hardest working players in the draft, and would also be one of the toughest. Unlike a lot of hard at it midfielders, Cunnington can actually have an impact in the air and on the scoreboard. Obviously nobody is a guaranteed A grader, but I'd be very confident with Cunnington.

#6 Sydney - Kane Lucas
With White and Johnston already on the list, and the likelihood of Bradshaw joining them, Sydney should be looking towards a midfielder. And Lucas is the best one available. He works hard, can run and has good disposal. I don't think Lucas will ever get the credit that he deserves, but that'll just mean he will fit in with the rest of the underrated Sydney midfielders.

#7 West Coast - Lewis Jetta
If Lucas was available, they would take him. But with him out of the picture, Jetta would be the next name on their list (although they should be very tempted by Butcher). Personally, I think it might be a tad too early for Jetta but I can see why a team like West Coast would take him here, especially given as he wont be available at their next pick. He'll add speed and skill to their midfield, even though he will probably start off of half forward. Jetta should be able to uphold the tradition of Pick 7 being one of the better players taken.

#8 Port Adelaide - John Butcher
How Butcher has slipped out of the top 3, I have no idea. He is clearly the best tall in the draft, and he has been all year. His supposed weaknesses should be fixed with proper training, and anyway nearly every key forward in the AFL is an inaccurate kick on goal. Butcher will be a big steal, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him having a real impact right from the start.

#9 Port Adelaide - Koby Stevens

Despite taking Butcher with their first pick, in my opinion the Port Adelaide midfield is their biggest problem. They have some decent midfielders, but they do lack some consistency and they just seem to be lacking one or two real quality midfielders. Stevens would offer them this quality, as well as a high level of determination and hard work.

#10 Essendon - Andrew Moore
Probably the first real surprise of my draft, with Essendon drafting Andrew Moore. He has been likened to Ryan O'Keefe and Andy Otten, but I would say he is more of a midfielder than both of those guys. But it is this versatilty that makes him such an attractive player, and he could fill a number of positions, whether it's up forward or running through the midfield. I could imagine some Essendon supporters complaining, but he has all the tools to be a very good player and is right up there in regards to being the best available.

#11 Melbourne - Nathan Vardy

In my opinion, Melbourne need a quality ruckman and none of their current ones have shown all that much (although Jamar looks to be becoming a fan favourite). Vardy is the best ruckman in the draft, but I don't think he will be around at their next pick. So I think Melbourne could pull a surprise and jump at him here. Having said that Vardy is still deserving a pick this high, because he does look to be a very promising young ruckman, but the lack of talls does help him in this case.

#12 Carlton - Jake Carlisle
Carlton going tall is no real surprise here, given they lost their only decent tall forward during trade week. Carlisle will finally offer them that young key forward they have been crying out for, but like all their other talls will offer some versatility in that he could play down back too. Short term, Henderson and Waite will go forward but long term I think they will both move down back and Carlisle will take over up forward.

#13 Adelaide - Gary Rohan
Everybody has Rohan going in the top 6, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I think he is a tad overrated on these boards, and will have a tough time living up to to the hype that is surrounding him. He is a half forward who rarely gets 15+ touches, and I have my doubts over whether he will ever move into the midfield. But a defensive half forward is exactly what Adelaide need, and really he is a perfect player for Adelaide and their game plan.

#14 Sydney - Daniel Talia
This seems to be the common pick for Sydney nowadays, and it's pretty obvious why. Sydney need a key defender and Talia is the best one available, I can see Talia and Grundy forming one of the better defences in the coming years. I did initially have Black going here, but with Bradshaw set to join Sydney in the PSD it seems unlikely they will go for a tall forward.

#15 Western Bulldogs - Luke Tapscott
Simply the best available here for the Bulldogs, and that player is Tapscott. He is a genuine possibility to go in the top 10, so it is a bit of a steal for the Bulldogs. Tapscott is a midfielder/forward with a pretty big body for a kid his age, and could potentially have an impact straight away. He might not be the crumbing forward the Bulldogs might want, but his long kick should definitely appeal to the Bulldogs, even though he is sometimes lacking a bit of accuracy.

#16 Port Adelaide - Brad Sheppard

Port should look to continue stocking up on midfielders, and again Sheppard is the best available. He has decent skills and always attacks the ball head on, which should get him some fans down at Port Adelaide. Sheppard has played primarily off of half back and can play shut down roles, but I see him developing into a very good wing/midfielder.

#17 Geelong - Sam Reid

A bit of a bolter in my draft, but Reid is deserving of a first round selection. Reid is an athletic tall, who is capable of playing either forward or back. He can take a strong mark, and did perform exceptionally well at the draft camp. I see Reid developing into a defender moreso than a forward, but his versatility and athleticism is what could see him going in the first round.

Second Round

#18 Melbourne - Ben Griffiths
Aaron Black is still available, but Griffiths offers something different to what Melbourne already have in Watts and Jurrah. Griffiths is a key forward who stands at nearly 200cm, and he can take a strong grab. He has had some injury problems which has kept him out of a fair chunk of football, but he has a lot of potential. He could play the Koschitzke type role, and allow Watts to lead up the ground like Riewoldt.

#19 Richmond - Aaron Black

Richmond should be rapt with Black lasting until their selection, as he could even go in the top 10. Richmond have some depth in their forwards, which should allow Black to develop in the VFL for a year or two before he is ready for AFL. And he will need that time to develop, but after that he should become a very good key forward for Richmond.

#20 Fremantle - Troy Taylor

I've taken on the role of #1 fan for Troy Taylor, so obviously I have a high opinion of him. But I think he is being overrated in some phantom drafts, with some people just focusing on the 'x-factor'. And I think the 20-25 range is more like it for him. There is no doubting he has the talent to become a star player, but it will all depend on consistency. Short term, he'll stay at home inside the forward 50 where he should be given free reign, but I can see him eventually pushing up the ground and having stints through the middle.

#21 North Melbourne - Jake Melksham
They got an inside midfielder with their first pick, and now with Melksham they have a player capable of playing both inside and outside, with decent pace to match. I think he will play off a wing where he can use this speed and agility, but he is quite good in the clearances too, so that is something to think about for long term. After his TAC Cup Grand Final he could very well go earlier than this, so this is a bit of a bargain pick for North.

#22 West Coast - Mitch Duncan

After taking Jetta with their first pick, the Eagles would be looking for something a bit different and they get that in the utility Duncan. Duncan can play up forward, through the midfield or could play across half back, and I think he will do well in any position. He has good skills and decision making, and is strong overhead. And with West Coast only having 3 selections, a player with his versatility would come in handy.

#23 West Coast - Jack Fitzpatrick
I think Fitzpatrick gets treated unfairly on these boards, for some reason people just don't seem to like him. He is tall and has more potential than proven performances, but that is common for a KPP. Fitzpatrick has all the tools to be a very, very good player and he could be developed into any number of roles. And long term, that could well be rotating through the ruck and forward line with Naitanui. With Kennedy already at the club, who I rate as the best young KPP in the AFL, the Eagles should be happy with a versatile player in Fitzpatrick.

#24 Essendon - Ryan Bastinac
Bastinac is certaintly a desirable player, in that he is an inside midfield who is strong around the stoppages but he can also run all day. He wins the contested ball, can move in traffic, has good foot skills and is a strong tackler. He isn't a flashy player, but he is solid and should find a spot in the Essendon midfield.

#25 North Melbourne - Matthew Panos
North were always going to look to draft a tall forward at some stage, and should be pretty happy with Panos being available here because he could go much earlier. Panos is more of a classic full forward, in that he is smart, leads well and is good shot on goal. He should form a good partnership up forward with the ruckmen Hale and Petrie, and should offer North a more reliable avenue to goal.

#26 Essendon - Jordan Gysberts
With this pick, the Essendon midfield should be fairly well complete and they have some real versatiltiy in there too. Gysberts is another smart midfielder who uses the ball well, and he could also play across the forward line. I think Gysberts will offer Essendon some real class through the middle, and should find a home playing off of one of the wings.

#27 Brisbane - Travis Colyer
I've never rated Colyer that highly, but he did perform very well at the draft camp and should have cemented himself as a second round selection. He is an attacking small midfielder, almost in the Brent Harvey mould. His speed and defensive pressure could see playing in the forward line as that small forward Brisbane are lacking, but he could also add that extra dimension to the Brisbane midfield.

#28 Geelong - Allen Christensen
I like Christensen, and would have liked to have fit him into the first round but it wasn't to be. So Geelong should be very happy with nabbing him here. Christensen is a small midfielder who likes to run the lines and does rack up the contested ball, plus he is pretty goal around the goals. He has been compared to Daniel Kerr, and there is a bit of Kerr in the way he moves. Should be a good fit for Geelong, and will offer them something different in the midfield.

#29 Adelaide - Jesse Crichton

I don't think Adelaide have any real weaknesses in their playing list, so they will just go for the best available. Crichton is a good solid midfielder, and can play both an attacking or defensive role, so he should fit in well at Adelaide. He'll need some time to develop and fill out properly, but Adelaide can afford to give him as much time as he needs, and I'm fairly confident Crichton will repay them.

#30 Collingwood - Josh Thomas
After Beams last year, this just seems like the right pick to me. But Thomas is actually deserving a top 30 selection, so it's not just the Queensland/Gold Coast factor. Thomas is a very promising midfielder, and wins plenty of contested ball. I haven't seen a lot of him, but by all reports he is one of the better players to come out of Queensland in recent years.

#31 Western Bulldogs - Jasper McMillan-Pittard
Jasper has increased his standing in the draft in the last month or so, and now looks to be a second round pick. He plays primarily off half back, although he can push further up the ground too. Run and carry is a feature of his game, and that should make him appealing to the Bulldogs and their game plan.

#32 St Kilda - Daniel Menzel

Menzel is a hard working, running defender who can also play shut down roles. His decision making and foot skills are a real strength, and he does play that quarterback role with success. By drafting Menzel, the Saints will be able to play guys like Goddard and Gram through the midfield more often than they have been, while also getting a possible midfield option in Menzel too.

#33 Essendon - Max Gawn
Personally, I think Essendon need another ruckman, even though some Essendon supporters might not agree with me. Ryder and Hille are quality players, and Bellchambers has shown a bit of promise. While by all reports, Bock is still a fair way from being physically ready. Gawn is the tallest player in the draft by a long way, and is also one of the better ruckmen in the draft. This is Essendon's last pick, so I can see them going for a developing tall.

Third Round

#34 Melbourne - Callum Bartlett

Firstly, if I have done my calculations right, Melbourne will need to delist another player in order to have this pick because at the moment they only have four spots. But I can't see Melbourne finishing their draft before this pick, because it is still relatively early. Anyway, I rate Bartlett pretty highly and it is only because of injuries that he has lasted this long. He has all the attributes (speed, agility, foot skills) to be a very good midfielder and he should add a bit of flair alongside of Trengove and Scully. Injuries are the only question mark on him.

#35 Richmond - Sam Shaw

I think Shaw pretty much offers Richmond everything they would be after. He is tall enough to play as a key defender or key forward, but he has enough pace to play through the midfield. I actually don't mind the Richmond defenders, but it seems some Richmond supporters aren't as optimistic. So that would be where I would develop Shaw, but it will probably take a couple of years until he fills out properly. But until then, he could easily play as a rebounder.

#36 Fremantle - Joel Houghton
I've had big wraps on Houghton for a while now, although I think a pick around 40-45 would be more his mark. Obviously pick 36 isn't that far off that range, and Fremantle should jump now to make sure they don't miss out on him. Houghton moves well for a player his size and can take a strong mark, plus he works hard on and off the field. There were rumours of a bit of a cocky attitude, but all the best forwards have this and I think Houghton will be a very good one.

#37 North Melbourne - Nat Fyfe
After drafting two midfielders and a full forward, I can see North looking to draft some excitement with this pick. Fyfe could be anything, and I could see him going much earlier than this in the real thing. He has been compared to Brett Burton and for very good reasons too. The height of Hale/Petrie, the football smarts of Panos and the excitement of Fyfe makes for a pretty damaging forward line.

#38 Sydney - Josh Cowan
Best available here for Sydney, and I think that is Cowan. So far they have drafted a key defender and a quality midfielder, so they should continue replenishing their midfield stocks here. Cowan is a winger who likes to run and carry the ball, and does actually win a fair share of the ball. Plus his decision making is generally pretty good. Cowan will add to a developing list of young midfielders at Sydney.

#39 Hawthorn - Roland Ah Chee
I think Hawthorn need a key defender, but that can wait until their next pick, particularly given that Ah Chee is still available. Has a pretty good mix of flash, with genuine ability. He played through the midfield in the U18 championships and collected the most possessions of anyone, and used the ball pretty well too. He had an excellent state screening, and could potentially go higher than this. Ah Chee is a midfielder, but could potentially play up forward at the start of his career.

#40 Geelong - James Craig
Geelong should be rapt that Craig is still here, because he could go easily go inside the first two rounds. Craig is a developing ruck, and was the best at the U18 championships. Height could prove to be a problem because at 195cm he is a tad small, but he has a good leap and shorter, mobile ruckmen seem to be the rage at the moment. Long term, I think Craig could be developed into a very good Daniel Merritt type full back, and should give Geelong another option down back if needed.

#41 North Melbourne - Jo Dare
Dare is a country boy who has come from nowhere into draft calculations. He is 188cm, but does play taller. I can see him being a replacement for Gibson, but unlike Gibson he is composed and has awareness of what is going on around him. Has very good hands, and is a tough player which North apparently like to pride themselves on.

#42 Geelong - Marcus Davies

Davies plays through the midfield and across half back, and is very much a power runner. This was shown through his excellent beep test and time trial results at the draft camp. Davies was interviewed by Geelong, and apparently performed well in his interviews. Given time to develop, and the Tasmanian could be a very handy pick up at this stage of the draft.

#43 Carlton - Anthony Delborello

Small/medium forward who is particularly strong when it comes to the contested ball. Kicked 14 goals in 6 Colts game this year, and was one of the standouts in the new kicking test at the draft camp. I rate Carlton's midfield pretty highly, while their defence is looking pretty good particularly with Russell playing down there. They have some flash up foward with Betts, Garlett and Yarran, but Delborello would offer them a real level of hard work up forward. A better version of Simon Wiggins.

#44 Richmond - Andrew Hooper

Richmond have drafted a quality mid, a key forward and a key defender so far, and now they pick up a small defender. Hooper could well go anywhere from early third round to the rookie draft, but I see no reason someone like Richmond wont take him. He has good agility and speed as shown at the draft camp, and he does play an attacking style. But he also has the temperament to play a shut down role, and could eventually push into the midfield as a tagger.

#45 Adelaide - Ryan Harwood
Like with their last pick, Adelaide don't have any real needs. So I see them going best available and that is Harwood. Harwood is a developing midfielder, and he will need time. But he has a lot of potential and could be an A-grade midfielder. Adelaide have the midfield depth to take him, and their midfield stocks should be complete now. The only other think I would consider is a tall defender, but it's not exactly urgent.

#46 Hawthorn - Dylan Grimes
So it's no real surprise that Hawthorn need a full back, and Gibson doesn't help with that at all. Grimes is a tall defender at 192cm, and he has the attributes to be developed into a real solid defender. Grimes can read the ball well and has good closing speed. He wont be a ready made player, but give him a year to develop and he should be good.

#47 Brisbane - David Astbury

After trading away Henderson, who was one of Brisbane’s few good young KPP’s, Brisbane will surely look to strengthen their talls with this pick. Astbury is a KPP who can play forward or back, and I think Astbury will develop into a solid key defender. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them draft a ready made player though as clearly they want that premiership now, and Astbury will probably require a couple of seasons in the gym, but you can't only be looking at the present.

#48 Fremantle - Chris Luff
Fremantle need a full back, and Luff is the best available. He is just a good solid player, with decent agility and skills. Like all good defenders he reads the play well and can take a strong mark. Luff performed very well in the U18 Championships, and I can see him being a very good but underappreciated full back.

#49 Fremantle - Josh Donaldson

I wasn't too sure about this pick, and still don't really know how I feel about it. Fremantle have gone very tall in this draft with Morabito, Taylor, Houghton and Luff already. Fremantle need genuine midfielders, but a developing ruckman/tall could be good to pass up on. Being a WA boy helps Donaldson here, and he is one of the better ruck prospects despite being a bit on the shorter side. He could also be developed into a key defender or key forward, so that versatility could seal the deal here for Fremantle.

Fourth Round

*Melbourne - no more spots, finished drafting*

#50 Richmond - Tom Hill
I think Richmond might be tempted to go with another midfielder here, given Martin is the only genuine one they have drafted. But Hill may be too good to pass on, given the potential to be developed into a KPP or ruckman role. He has all the attributes you could want in a tall player, but has had some injury problems. Like I said, a midfielder might be more accurate here but I think Richmond might take a punt on Hill.

#51 Fremantle - Pass
Fremantle have commited to taking part in the PSD, so will pass with this selection.

#52 North Melbourne - Anthony Long
Long is a skilful running defender, who has been injured at stages during the season. Potentially, he could go a lot higher than this as he is a very good player. Has speed and agility, and works well in traffic too. I could see Long playing off a wing or across half back, and his speed and skill should be appreciated at North.

#53 Sydney - Pass
Sydney no longer have enough room for any more picks. And if they want to draft Bradshaw in the PSD, then they will have to pass on this selection.

*Sydney - no more spots, finished drafting*

#54 Geelong - Jason Tutt
Geelong have picked up another selection after the retirement of David Johnson. Having already drafted two talls and two smalls, I think Geelong will continue to build their midfield depth. Tutt is a highly skilled half back/midfielder from Canberra, with good speed. Geelong were one team to interview him at the State Screening, and with his speed and skill he would offer something different coming off half back.

#55 Hawthorn - Myles Sewell
I don't think a lot of mature aged players will get drafted, with the majority probably being picked up as rookies. But Sewell is one that I think will get picked up. He really is quite like his brother in style, in that he can play both attacking and defensively. And Sewell should offer Hawthorn a relatively ready made player.

#56 Hawthorn - Kyle Hartigan
Hawthorn pick up another draft pick after the delisting of Mitch Thorp. And in Hartigan they get a replacement for Thorp. Hartigan is quite good athletically, and has the versatility to play either down back or up forward. Hawthorn would be feeling pretty good that at least one of Grimes and Hartigan will make it as a key defender.

#57 Carlton - Pass
More likely that with rookie promotions, they wont have room on their list for another pick. But they could look at saving a pick for the PSD too.

#58 St Kilda - Serhat Temel
I think somebody was bound to take the chance on Temel, and the Saints are in a good position to do so. They don't desperately need a tall forward, so Temel will be given plenty of time to develop in the VFL. And I think he will need the time to develop more dimensions to his game. But I think he could be a handy pickup at this stage in the draft, and could develop into a classic stay at home key forward.

#59 Adelaide - Derick Wanganeen
OK, so I said before that Adelaide's midfield stocks were done. But there aren't a lot of tall defenders left, so I went best available again. Wanganeen is a midfielder/half forward, who can the read the game very well. He is very small, but moves well in traffic and can play as a small crumbing forward too. He'll take a while to become physically ready for AFL, but is a good project at this stage of the draft. I think Adelaide will take both a key defender and ruckman in the rookie draft though.

#60 Collingwood - Ayden Kennedy
I think Kennedy could go in the third round at some stage, but could also slide to the rookie draft. I think Collingwood will look towards a forward at the back end of the draft, but there aren't a lot of options. Kennedy is more a lead up forward, but he is a good kick on goal and is athletically pretty good. He is a bit like John Anthony, but I think they could work well together and will be hard to mathch up on.

#61 Western Bulldogs - Matthew Scott
Scott is a medium sized defender/midfielder, who attacks the ball hard and is generally pretty good by hand and foot. He is the best player available, and could potentially go 20+ spots earlier. I haven't drafted a tall for the Bulldogs, and this is their draft done now. I don't think they'll be too worried about their forward line, and they do have a number of tall defenders. I think they'll be looking at taking a developing full back in the rookie draft, along with an exciting crumbing forward.

#62 St Kilda - Pass
With Dawson a certainty to get elevated, that will take up this spot, so come the final list lodgement they shouldn't have enough room for this pick.

Fifth Round

#63 Richmond - Alex Carey

I've had Carey as high as the second round, but he just kept slipping and it wouldn't surprise me to see him last until the rookie draft. But he is a good solid inside midfielder, with a focus on courage and tackling. He wins plenty of the ball and generally uses it well. Is also a very good cricketer, and currently holds a rookie contract with the Redbacks.

*West Coast - no more spots, finished drafting*

#64 Hawthorn - Pass
Hawthorn still have room on their list for one more player, and I think they'll be looking at drafting a ruckman. Groenewegan, Hannath and Milne are all options, but I think they'll draft a mature aged ruck in the PSD.

#65 Richmond - Luke Thompson
After the delistings of Hughes, Pattinson, Polak and Putt, Richmond would be looking at another tall with this pick. Thompson is an athletic tall defender, and like most new draftees he is pretty versatile. Simply the best tall available at this point.

*Essendon - no more spots, finished drafting*

#66 Brisbane - Gerrick Weedon
Weedon is a medium sized forward/midfielder from WA, and he could potentially go inside the top 50. He has good football smarts and doesn't seem to get too flustered. I think he is probably the best available here, and should offer Brisbane something a bit different up forward.

*Adelaide - no more spots, finished drafting*

#67 Collingwood - Nicholas Winmar
Winmar is a medium/tall forward who could also be one to go a lot higher than this. He is strong athletically, and his good both on the ground and above his head. He will need time to develop, and to work on his endurance in particular. But I can see him developing into a more than handy half forward who can push up to the wing. Winmar could prove to be a big steal this late in the draft.

#68 Western Bulldogs - Jack Hannath
So the Bulldogs have apparently committed to putting Eagleton on the veterans list, which means they will get another selection here. The Bulldogs will be looking for one of two things; a ruckman or speed. So in the end I've gone with a ruckman in Hannath. He's a young, developing ruckman from SA who moves well around the ground. Hannath could well go as early as the third round. While the Bulldogs might need some speed, that will be easier to get during the rookie draft than a quality ruckman.

Sixth Round

#69 Sydney - Pass

Sydney will pass here, and take Bradshaw in the PSD. The one thing I didn't have Sydney draft was a small crumbing forward, and I think it might be worth Sydney looking at someone like Bradley Palipuaminni in the rookie draft.

#70 Brisbane - Robbie Hicks
About the only thing Brisbane didn't trade for was a small, crumbing forward. Hicks can play this role, while also capable of pushing into the midfield. At this stage of the draft, any selection is quite speculative but I think Hicks does have some upside and potential as an AFL small forward. Again like Sydney, one of the NT small forwards could be the go in the rookie draft.

#71 Richmond - Charlie McAdam
Another pick for Richmond, and again they go with the best available player. McAdam could well go much earlier than this, and it wouldn't surprise me if he did. He is a creative half back flanker, with pretty decent skills. Ultimately he could well be a replacement for Oakley-Nicholls, although one drafted much later so he wont have as much to live up to. I'd actually be pretty confident of McAdam making it, despite being drafted so late.

#72 Brisbane - Mark Hutchings
I considered Gordon with this pick, but decided to go with an inside midfielder. With Colyer, Weedon and Hicks they have some speed and versatility, but Hutchings will give them a genuine midfield option who unlike their other draftees could have more of an immediate impact. I also considered another tall here, but Brisbane have no rookies so they can take the punt on plenty of talls in the rookie draft.

Draft Summary

Adelaide

Gary Rohan
Jesse Crichton
Ryan Harwood
Derick Wanganeen

It was a midfielders draft for Adelaide, and a pretty good one in that. They still might need another tall defender, but they can get that in the rookie draft. With the pending retirements of Goodwin, Edwards, McLeod and Doughty, Adelaide should be feeling pretty comfortable with replacing them.

Brisbane
Travis Colyer
David Astbury
Gerrick Weedon
Robbie Hicks
Mark Hutchings

Mostly late picks for Brisbane after trading away their future for a shot at the premiership now. Colyer could prove to be a good pick, and Astbury gives them a KPP to develop. Weedon and Hutchings are also decent choices, with Hicks provided the speed.

Carlton
Jake Carlisle
Anthony Delborello

Just the two picks for Carlton, and they'd be feeling pretty good about getting Carlisle. And he should prove to be a decent long term KPP. While Delborello could be a bargain pick, and like Wiggins could be one of those players who is always around the mark.

Collingwood
Josh Thomas
Ayden Kennedy
Nicholas Winmar

A very promising midfielder with their first pick, and a couple of gambles with late picks. Kennedy was the best forward available, and will be hard to match up on alongside of Anthony. While Winmar, given time to develop, could be anything. I think they'll be looking at a big bodied forward in the rookie draft, and there should be a few option for them to develop.

Essendon
Andrew Moore
Ryan Bastinac
Jordan Gysberts
Max Gawn

Essendon finished drafting after the second round, and their list shows it. A solid utility, two promising midfielders and a monster ruckman. A pretty good draft for Essendon, and it should hold their midfield in good stead.

Fremantle
Anthony Morabito
Troy Taylor
Joel Houghton
Chris Luff
Joshua Donaldson

A very tall draft for Fremantle, and they are still lacking a genuine midfielder or two. But there are still some options left in the rookie draft, Hutchings for one. But with the two new teams coming in, Fremantle will have hopefully drafted their future spine.

Geelong
Sam Reid
Allen Christensen
James Craig
Marcus Davies
Jason Tutt

One of the big winners in my draft. Reid, Christensen and Craig could all go inside the top 25 on draft day. Davies has potential, and should have plenty of time to develop over at Geelong. And Tutt offers something different across half back.

Hawthorn
Roland Ah Chee
Dylan Grimes
Myles Sewell
Kyle Hartigan

After focusing on trade week, rather than the draft, Hawthorn weren't going to be big players. But they didn't do too badly. Ah Chee could be a very good player, while Sewell should be ready pretty early on. And there is something to work with in both Grimes and Hartigan.

Melbourne

Jack Trengove
Tom Scully
Nathan Vardy
Ben Griffiths
Callum Bartlett

With four picks in the top twenty, you would hope Melbourne did well. And they did just that. The two best midfielders, the best ruckman, a tall forward with a lot of potential and another promising but injury troubled midfielder.

North Melbourne
Ben Cunnington
Jake Melksham
Matthew Panos
Nat Fyfe
Jo Dare
Anthony Long

North would be pushing Melbourne for the best draft in my opinion. Panos and Fyfe will add a lot to their forward line, while Cunnington and Melksham have the ability to walk into the starting 22. And Dare and Long will help sure up the defence. It's unlikely that every draftee will be a long term player, and I think North might have the best chance of that happening.

Port Adelaide
John Butcher
Koby Stevens
Brad Sheppard

They stopped drafting after the first round, so clearly they would do pretty well. Port should have fixed both their forward line and midfield with their picks.

Richmond
Dustin Martin
Aaron Black
Sam Shaw
Andrew Hooper
Tom Hill
Alex Carey
Luke Thompson
Charlie McAdam

One of the bigger players in the draft, drafting a huge 8 players, and I have Richmond drafting a bit of everything. A tall forward, two tall defenderd, a small defender, a couple of midfielders, a creative half back and a developing ruck/key position player. Overall, not too bad from Richmond in my opinion.

St Kilda
Daniel Menzel
Serhat Temel

Just the two picks, but they have picked up a big key forward which they'll look forward to developing. Plus a half back/midfielder, who was the best available at the time.

Sydney
Kane Lucas
Daniel Talia
Josh Cowan

If I were Sydney, I would be very happy with the first two picks and I'd be pretty confident of them making it. While Cowan has the potential to be a good player too. Sydney will pass on their last pick, to draft Bradshaw in the PSD.

West Coast
Lewis Jetta
Mitch Duncan
Jack Fitzpatrick

Another team who finished drafting early. They didn't get the small crumbing forward they would be looking for, but that is what the rookie draft is for. Jetta will offer something different in the middle, while Duncan could end up rotating with LeCras. And Fitzpatrick has the potential to be the best tall taken, overall a pretty strong draft.

Western Bulldogs
Luke Tapscott
Jasper McMillan-Pittard
Matthew Scott
Jack Hannath

The Bulldogs ended up taking four players, and with their first three picks I've gone with the best player available. I would be pretty confident with the first two players, while Scott could be a find too. With the drafting of Hannath they've fixed one area, but will still be looking for speed and a key defender in the rookie draft.

Not happy with a pick? Then choose your replacement from the list of unlucky players....

Myles Pitt - lead up third tall, think Brad Fisher
Brayden Norris - hard running midfielder/half forward, equalled best ever beep test at draft camp
Simon Potts - young key defender from SA
Deon Gordon - NT half back, very good foot skills
Joseph Groenewegan - mobile ruckman from Tassie
Cameron Milne - developing young ruck, again from Tassie
Cameron Kickett - undersized ruck/winger, very good project player
Zac Ledin - no nonsense midfielder, wins plenty of ball
Tom Mackenzie - versatile tall defender, can take smalls or talls
Kallan Geary - midfielder who can run all day, very good endurance
Jordan Williams - midfielder/half back, good with contested ball
Justin Bollenhagen - medium sized midfielder with good skills
Chaz Sargeant - half forward with strong hands
Scott Taylor - inside midfielder from NT, dominated at the Champs
Mitch Taylor - tall defender, think Darryl White
Daniel Archer - young key forward from Tassie
Byron Sumner - quick small forward/midfielder with a big kick
Dylan Robertson - tall defender, perhaps not tall enough to play as a key defender though
Hayden Busher - CHB from WA
Dylan Jones - ruck/KPP
Josh Giddings - lead up forward from SA

Tapscott will go at 10 if still available.

9 is a bit high for Kobe Stevens. Tapscott or Rohan would make much more sense if still available.

Rohan I rate to go at minimum pick 9. Port loseing both Burgoyne's will be very keen to add some speed.

Geelong at 17 might be more interested in Bastinac or Melksham.

Hawthorn with pick 39 I would say will go with James Craig if available as he could play backup ruck or key position back to fill needs. Probably don't need Ah Chee as much considering they just got Burgoyne.

Nice work Chris, have enjoyed reading your draft and think you have a good grasp of the players.

From what I have seen of Mark Hutchings, he is certainly draftable, and I rate him quite highly, do you care to elaborate on him a bit for me?

From a Dogs perspective, you have got us selecting 2 blokes who I have in my top 15, so would certainly take that result!

Cheers

I'd think Port would be more inclined to go with Rohan or Tapscott than Stevens at 9, im pretty sure either him or Melksham would still be available at 16 which would make me happy :)

Would be nice to be able to pick young Byron Sumner up in the rookie draft, i reckon Port will pounce there if he doesn't fit in like you suggest he wont.

sorry but essendon wont pass on tapscott and if port did select him we would take stevens. Also melksham would be way ahead of moore for us.

do like the bastinac and gysberts picks if not maybe colyer cause of his beautiful speed and ability to win the ball. everything is good except the first round for the bombers.

Collingwood

Would be very happy with that draft

Tapscott should go top 25, and is a genuine chance at going top 10. But I think he might be a tad overrated on these boards. No doubt he has promise, but his kicking is not as good as everyone thinks it is. Although if he can find the accuracy to go with the big boot, he could be a pretty dangerous player.

I knew Essendon supporters wouldn't be too supportive of Moore, but that really doesn't bother me. I would be more than happy with Moore, but people do seem to have something against versatile players (Fitzpatrick for example). Moore is more midfielder than utility in my opinion, and I have little doubts he would be a good top 10 selection.

As for Hutchings, I think he could be a very good late selection and I was very tempted to send him to Fremantle at #49. He's a solid midfielder and will give his all, he might not ever make it to a real high level but he would be more than serviceable.

My favourite players from those who missed out would be Hutchings, Gordon, Bollenhagen, M Taylor and S Taylor. And I wouldn't mind Fremantle taking any of those players in the rookie draft.

Great effort mate.

I like your thinking regarding Essendon surprising people with picking Moore. Seems like a good player.

Essendon have a tendency to raise a few eyebrows with our first pick.

Genuine midfielders OR Talia at 10. No in between players, and we don't need any more "utilities" we have enough of them. Moore is a 2nd round selection, maybe very lat 1st round but that is even a stretch. There are just better options- Talia, Melksham, Rohan, Tapscott and even Critchton, are all better choices at 10.

Thanks for that Chris. :)
