We still have Harwood coming through in our mids, who is a good inside mid, however, i do agree that the Lions do need some more midfield depth. We do still have a few untried players with good potential in Green, Bartlett, Polec and to a lesser extent Harwood, but i think our mids lack pace. A mid setup of Rich, Redden and Rockliff sounds great, but none of these guys are overly quick. Lucky, Green Bartlett and Polec all have pace, but we can't put all our eggs in that one basket. I'd expect us to go for a couple of quicker mids as you have suggested Chris.

However, we do have pressing needs with our KPP as well. Clark is gone, leaving a 30 year old Brown and a largely unproven Cornelius and Retzlaff as our future KPF, and Bergs as the only ruckman on our list. I could easily see us using our first pick on a tall, although it does depend on what we get back from losing Clark.

Great mock as always Chris.

Yeah, Grigg is an interesting one. I still think he could be fringe first round material - because he is a good genuine footballer and I suppose Geelong have shown the value of actual footballers. But still, you do need some level of athleticism and commitment. And Grigg could definitely slide because of this.

There was never any question over his endurance though. Grigg can run all day, just not very fast. Although having said that, I'll wait for an official 20m sprint time because 3.4 doesn't seem quite right.

As for Grigg and Forster - you'll notice Grigg's kicking more especially over a distance, but looking back on the game you'll realise that Forster didn't make a mistake. Hard to say who is better, but ultimately both are very good.

Nice update, but I just cant see GWS taking a punt on losing Longer to Port. They would be happy with either Tyson or Hoskin-E, but walking away from draft day without their 10 year elite ruck would be a absolute disaster.

Also, Port (coach by a ruckman) have made no secrets they want Longer, and if they get Ebert in trade week then the need for drafting a mid lessons.

I see picking Tyson or Hoskin-E as a toss of the coin selection...Risking not getting Longer is certainly not a Toss of the coin move

:)

I would do it if I were GWS. I don't think Port would take Longer.

Port will trade for a mature aged ruckman, and they have some young ruckmen coming through at the moment. No stars, but enough to keep them from taking one at #6 this year. They'd be better off looking towards Brodie Grundy next year, who is just as good as Longer.

I'm sure they'll be talking up Longer prior to the draft. Whether the talk is enough to convince GWS to let Wingard fall, or if they just take whoever is left of Tyson and Hoskin-Elliot is the question. They'll be taking a midfielder regardless though.

Wouldn't it come down to what happens in TW?

What does WIngard's 13 in the beep mean for his chances fo slipping to Port?

And did you also notice that it seems like Sheedy has 3 picked already for 1,2,3 by the way he interviewed today?

Chris I know when I saw your initial list for north i wasn't that impressed. Luke Brown and Aseeri Rawasaka. Luke obviously will get pre selected by gws but aseeri has slipped down a lot.

The list you have put together for north now is beautiful and would be over the moon if we did get what you have put forward. If Ellis does slide that far I can see us picking him up in a second, though I personally think he will go between 10-15. I like all the other picks aswell and would have taken them over almost anyone else in their spots. Sheridan looks like he would bleed for the club he plays for. Seems to give his all and seems very mature aswell.

Jordan Kelly also has a lot to like and would love to see him develop at north melbourne, then Michael Mascoulis perfect size for an afl player and with pace and skills could replace daniel wells or slot into our troublesome backline

As much as I love East Freo boys getting drafted, Chad Sandilands won't be AFL reserves (ie NEAFL, SANFL, VFL, WAFL league) ready for another 2 or 3 years, then AFL ready for about 4. He has 1 year left in the colts I believe, but probably wouldn't be able to break into the EF reserves team. Almost the same as his brother at the same age but honestly has so much to work on around the ground, no leap in the ruck (none needed as height), but he has no confidence in his kicking ability and is always looking to give off the around the back handball.

Stats:

6 games
113 hitouts (Av: 18.8)
11 kicks (Av: 1.8)
18 handballs (Av: 3)
29 total disp. (Av: 4.8)
10 marks (Av: 1.7)
0 goals 0 behinds
4 tackles (Av: 0.7)

You don't need to tell me that. I've been telling people that Sandilands wont play league football in the WAFL for at least two years, and from there it's still a long way to AFL. But I don't think that will necessarily stop a team from picking him up in the rookie draft - very little to lose from having a raw ruck prospect on the rookie list, even for three years.

Did test well, don't see how he's a 2nd Menzel?

It goes back a few pages where Chris and I compared him.

Chris , just looking thru the vids on AFL.What do you think of Elliot Yeo. Seems to have a few moves on him, reminds me a bit of Menzel and Duncan. Same sort of size , skill set etc.

Yeah, I like Elliot Yeo. He is pretty underrated on BigFooty, and I'm probably a little guilty of that myself. He impresses me every time I see him play. Good skills, good overhead and just does the odd thing that really makes you take notice. And although he perhaps isn't as strong in the forward half, I do like the Menzel comparison......

I just like the way he moved in the vids , went back had a look at the SavWa match and didn't stand out , but really neither did Menzel. The testing result will give him lift I'm sure. The vertical for instance is a real positive for mine.

Xavier Richards? had a long chat to sydney...handy player? Any thoughts where he might go? He will get picked up i reckon.

I would think Xavier has a better chance at getting taken in the national draft, than not. He has typically been around the mark in my draft, but I've just ended up going with some other guys. But I'd probably look at him ahead of the likes of Gordon and Roberts. Third round wouldn't be out of the question.

Menzel #2 , Yeo , seems to have tested well. On the move up?

Yeah, Yeo had a very good combine. Had a nice combination of results too - kicking, agility, jump. Will be interesting to see where that places him now. Wasn't necessarily anything I wasn't expecting from him though. But he does look to be on the rise.

Adrian Dodoro and James Hird have come out and said Ess will be getting midfielders in the draft... doubt we will pick up Kersten at #19.. more like Grigg, Crozier...

Yeah, Essendon going for Kersten was never going to happen. But I would be quite tempted. Long term, I think Carlisle and Hurley will both prove to be better defenders than forwards. And short term, Kersten would provide a more immediate option than Steinberg - who I'm a fan of but doubt would play next season.

Even with Hurley at FF, Kersten would be a great foil for him as the second tall. Allowing Crameri to get the #3 defender, and you wouldn't have to waste time with Reimers anymore.

But like you said, it wont happen. Could see Essendon taking McKenzie or Ellis if they last, otherwise they might go with Docherty even though that would be a bit too early for mine.

I'd really like to hear more about Ellis-Yolmen, I know I asked before but I was wondering If you could elaborate further?

What's his kicking like? How high could he go in the first round? Could you see him going to the Tigers in a Conca-esque fashion?

Honestly, I don't know just how high Ellis-Yolmen will go. It seems that everyone who has seen him play is a big fan of his, but there aren't a heap of posters here who have seen any U18 SANFL football. I know people involved in underage football over here in SA really like him, even though he didn't get a lot of exposure in the U18 Championships.

First round talent, but not necessarily a first round pick.

If you just look at his measurables, he is 191cm and 88kg. That alone is exciting for a midfielder. His beep test and 3km run results were better than a number of other potential first round midfield prospects. So you've got a genuinely big bodied midfielder, with a tank in line with players much shorter and lighter.

He also averages nearly 30 touches in the SANFL, and while you could argue it is only U18s it shows he can win the ball. And a large reason for that is because he can win his own ball. Strong in contested situations - hence his 5 clearances a game average. But I see him lining up on a wing, Morabito style where he can use his size and run to link up. One of those loping type players, which doesn't necessarily highlight his athleticism. But it's there.

As for when he has the ball, I have no problems there. His hands in particular are quite clean. Kicking skills are fine too. When he is outside, he is a creative player who can be used to set up the play. If I were a coach, I'd just give players like him free reign to do whatever they want. Maybe that's why I'm not a coach though?

I think I've talked him up enough. Not sure if someone like Richmond will take the punt on him, I would recommend it though. Might be more likely that a team with a few early picks could go for him - GWS, Port Adelaide or Adelaide (if they don't trade their picks away).

A very fine description. I rate him quite highly and would add that he's good in the air as well. He has had a knee re-con. This may have caused him to fall in estimations and obviously with the time out of the game, he may have been forgotten a little.

Thanks for the insight Chris. I really appreciate it. He is definitely a name I'll be keeping an eye on.

I think he may gain a lot more attention from the BF masses when they put a clip together on AFL.com

He sounds exactly like a player we need but I would be reluctant to place him in any mock having never watch him play.

I think the fact he has two last names would scare many Richmond supporters away. :D

Speaking of two last names, it seems like Jordan Wilson might be going by Jordan King-Wilson now. He is another player who doesn't have the profile on BigFooty that he deserves. But I guess that's the SANFL factor at play again.

Is a very good half back, with good vision and foot skills. I'd love Fremantle to draft him, would be a perfect replacement for Roger Hayden. Hopefully he is another one who can get a bit of a following around here.
