Thanks for the great read Chris, very pleased with what you have given the Tigers the only issue is Docherty at 26. By your discription he just doesn't seem like someone we would look at taking. Would much prefer someone like Merrett Yeo Waldhunter or Ellis Yolmen. Now I know they might seem like a reach but we have shown in the last couple of drafts that we're happy to reach for a player if we are really interested in them.

I'll wait to see O'Hanlon in your RD?

He might feature. He is good at what he does, but doesn't necessarily have that next level to his game that will make him a best 22 player. If I was looking at a medium forward type, I'd prefer Murdoch or Hender myself. Maybe that's my SA bias coming through though.

Dont know if hawks would take a key forward with their first pick with Buddy, Roughead and now Gunston set to be their awhile.

Yeah, it was a late change to give Hawthorn the KPF. I ended up taking the view that Gunston isn't exactly a Lisle replacement, as he isn't a true KPF as such. With the midfield depth you have, I thought you could afford to take your pick of the key forwards in the second round rather than wait.

always enjoy reading your drafts chris, and this is no excpetion. i actually never even thought about us using our first pick on devon smith but he really is a little goer isnt he. i always thought that we would use our first pick on tal or an inside midfieler but i would not be dissapointed with smith.

I must say, I hadn't really considered Devon Smith until he was available at our pick. Thought he was the best of the midfielders available, and could realistically go inside the top 12 or so. Is also something we don't really have - can play both inside and outside, has speed and can go forward. Would be a huge upgrade over Palmer and Schammer.

All WA boys for West Coast then?

Huh, didn't notice that. Thought Lockyer was the best available/most versatile tall at your first pick, and think Newman would be a great addition to the Eagles side - I would love him at Fremantle. Manson was always going to be a late pick to one of the WA sides.

Another pick I made a few changes to. Obviously Richmond have quite a few half backs, especially now with the addition of Steve Morris. But thought Docherty would be as good a match for Kavanagh as anyone else. Reads the play really well and has a good turn of pace. Push him up to a wing and let him run forward, and he'll be an even better fit.

Round 2

#33 Hawthorn - Nick Murphy (194cm forward - Oakleigh Chargers)

One player I’ve held off on, as I’ve wanted to see whether others rate him or not. And it looks like I could be on my own at this early stage. Not necessarily the year Murphy would have been hoping for, wasn't selected in the U18 Championships and missed out on a Draft Combine invite. But he was the leading goal scorer in the TAC Cup. Attended the Combine last year as a 17 year old, he is bigger than what he was and that has only helped his marking game. Another former basketballer but he is a very good and espcially on goal, where he has an interesting yet effective kicking style. AFL Comparison: Jack Riewoldt.

Really interesting pick Chris. Saw Murphy in the TAC Cup Grand Final and really stood out. Seems like he is a good height, good hands, composed with the ball and looked pretty agile. Thought i had him mixed up with Roberts for a while when everyone had him shooting up the rankings for kicking 5. Yet Murphy kicked 5 as well and has no hype on him at all. A bit strange for the leading goal kicker in the TAC Cup.

Just wondering if you could give any more info on him. What are the knocks on him? Is there anything in particular holding him back? Admittedly i've only seen him the one time but he looked like a good prospect and this is the first draft i've seen him get a mention.

Knowing our recruitment team we will take Lockyer, but he is the last type of player we need right now.

Hoping somehow Mcinnes slides to 23.

Newman is exactly what we need and should be on the radar at Pick 28.

Given our pick range it would probably be safest to pick home grown stock and most on our board have considered that a fait accompli but we may look east for a quick winger/HFF/crumbing type.

great effort Chris If we got those players we will have done well I think we do have pick 74 as well so if Waylon was still there snap him up with that pick too
Smith Kersten Frost Wilson Lee Manson

Great effort Chris as soon as Clark was off the table my thoughts turned to your mock draft to see who was heading our way.

I was just wondering what is the go on Doug Morris. Basically was the leading ball getter/clearance player in the TAC. I don't know anything about him outside of the numbers he put up, doesn't seem as though he featured in the u18 carnival so does this translate into not being able to step up to the next level?

Yeah, I must say I was very surprised he hasn't gotten more of a mention. I rate Murphy as being right up there with Dobosz in terms of early round KPFs. Roberts got all of the attention from the TAC Cup GF because he dominated a quarter, whereas Murphy was consistent all game. Doesn't really seem fair, but I suppose Roberts was on the winning side.

It's been an odd year for Murphy though. GWS invited him to the Combine last year, but he missed out on U18 selection and only got a state screening invite this year. But then again, he was the leading goal scorer in the TAC Cup. So it's not like he has exactly had a poor year or anything.

I really like him though. 194cm former basketballer, but unlike many converts he is a good kick - especially on goal. I'd be surprised if he made it past the second round.

Morris will be an interesting one to watch come draft day. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if someone looked to him earlier than what some might expect, as you said he is a genuine ball winner and will be one of those guys who will push for selection early. These types of players are coming back into vogue, after being overlooked for athletes in previous years.

But something about him just strikes me as being more of a rookie pick. Just doesn't seem to have that extra something to his game, that will take him past being anything more than solid depth.

I know people like saying this draft is a weak one, but I've always said the top 30 or so are strong. It's just the overall depth that is a bit weak. So I think teams will use their picks after the second round on players with one or two AFL quality traits that they can work with, and look at Morris type players in the rookie draft.

Can't see Melbourne taking a tall defender this year, we took two last year in McDonald and Davis who are both coming on well.

Yeah fair point. Kelly is more of a big bodied half back, a bit like Joel Macdonald for you guys this year. I think he could be developed into a good Sam Fisher type CHB, but you could just as easily let him run and be more of an attacking option.

I would be annoyed if we passed on Toby Greene. We really need more quality mids.

I thought the Greene selection would raise a few eyebrows. Do I think he will slip that far? No. I do think with GWS having so many early picks, that he will drop a bit further than what he would have if say Melbourne still had pick 12 however. I don't think the Giants will take him considering their list already, and for Brisbane I would go with more of an outside player.

Looking at my draft, you could make an argument for him going to either Richmond, Fremantle or Essendon in the top 20. And then pretty much any team after that. But you can just as easily have other players going at those picks instead, as I have done.

There is always someone who drops, and I've never been as big on Greene as others. So he was the unlucky one in my draft - not that I expect it to happen like this come draft day.

I'm not a huge draft expert, but I believe this draft will be very subjective from 10 onwards. With a lot of talent already taken from Last year (Cameron, Shiel and Treloar), clubs will certainly have a different opinion on anyplayer considered outside the elite "10". Especially when GWS have room to manouver with 11 of the first 14 picks.

I really have no idea who we will take at 27. We pretty much have already done our draft by getting Crouch for 2013 and Brown who we seem to rate very highly (Top 15 according to Sando).

I would be happy with Greene, Talia, McKenzie, Grigg, Waldhuter and Elton at this selection.

A full back?

Unless you see him as a HBF.

I think there is a very good chance he won't be able to hold down a key position at the next level and then yes we will be left with yet another half back flanker/ 3rd tall defender. He may turn out to be a Hunter like swingman but even then I don't like the swingman role, it more than often means they are not quite good enough at either end.

I really rate Blayne Wilson and reckon he will fill the same position that Lockyer can.

Not totally against him as a player, but given his size and our depth in defenders I just don't see the point. It is the perfect time to recruit a couple of outside runners/crumbing forwards with our 2 picks in the 20s.

Yeah, I've been saying for a while that every team will have vastly different lists - obviously Adelaide will claim whoever they draft was in their top 10 regardless. So I wouldn't be too surprised if someone was to drop further than expected, and there were more 'reaches' than in previous years.

Yeah my phantom is quite different to yours, this may be due to a TAC cup bias though or i'm no good at this lol.

Good to see someone has Boseley rated higher then Talia. I was beginning to think I was alone on this. I rate Boseley as the best key defender in this year's draft, Talia a very close second. McInnes I'm still yet to see.

Regarding Mihocek, do you think given his draft combine results that he's a chance of slipping to the rookie draft?

Yeah, Boseley has really grown on me. Is a really smart player, so he doesn't just rely on strength. Looks to play the ball on it's own merit, and I really like that. I like Talia, but would take Boseley if I wanted a KPD. Will be interesting to see how high he goes, I wouldn't be surprised if GWS did look at him early.

The Giants have a few young KPFs already, especially with Patton to go top 2 this year. But their defensive stocks aren't as deep. Davis is a good option at CHB, and it looks like they have Tim Mohr at FB now. Jack Hombsch will be a good player, and Ben Casley is a likely type. But they could really use some more height down there - wouldn't expect much from Cornes in terms of playing on the key forwards. So I expect they'll look to take at least one key defender with picks 13/14 as opposed to a tall forward which they don't need as much.

As for Mihocek, I rate him pretty highly. So he'll always feature in my draft. Another really smart player, knows where to run. Also not a lot of players his size with his versatility and ability in close.
