Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Chris25, I noticed you don't have Mackenzie from SA in your ranking. I thought he showed a fair bit tonight and through the Championships, whilst also being touted as a highly rated youngster by those commentating. Where is he in your ranking of the midfielders?

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Overall, my bests would be...

Vic Metro - Dom Tyson, Toby Greene, Will Hoskin-Elliot, Billy Longer, Michael Talia, Jon Patton
Vic Country - Lachie Whitfield, Matt Buntine, Devon Smith, Nic O'Brien, Piva Wright

I'm taping the second game, so will watch that one eventually too.

Mitchell Wooffindin was comfortably among Metro's best players last night.

Yeah, I deliberately left McKenzie off that little list. The others I listed are more the genuine midfielders in my eyes, whereas McKenzie is more of a forward/back flanker at this stage. I had going at #12 in my actual draft, and his Championships definitely justified that.

I've been tinkering with the first and second rounds over the last few days, so I'll look to post it later on today.

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

I updated the opening post of this thread with Mock Draft Version 2.0. It's a better reflection of the current draft standings, as it is longer and my aim wasn't just on getting some more names out there like last time.

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Would love to see Greene slip to port's priority pick of 28 or so, he needs to quite down from here on in though

Is that a possibility or not

Grundy isn't a name a hear being mentioned much what r ur thoughts on him Chris?

absolutely dominated the hit outs last game didn't he? or is he next yr?

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Grundy isn't eligible until next year, although he can be a part of the GWS mini draft. He was easily the most influential player in the last quarter against WA, dominated the ruck contests and around the ground. If I was Port, I would be trying very hard to get in that mini draft to get Grundy.

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Totally agree regarding Marley Williams, was very good. Off the ball work was sensational, shepheard he laid in 3rd was excellent. If that kind of performance is regular for him he could easily push into the top 30.

Btw Sam Docherty is listed in the VFL/TAC cup record as 183cm 83kg.

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Yeah, I think Williams could quickly become one of my favourites in this draft. He reminded me of Albert Proud, and I mean that in a good way. Just has a lot of natural talent, and as you said he works hard and does the team things too (maybe not so Proud like in that regard).

And thanks for the Docherty info, not quite as tall as I thought but I don't think that will change all that much.

Good work Chris, I would be stoked with Kavanagh. I suspect he'll move up out of reach come draft day though.

Re: A Mock Draft In June?

Love the expansion of the draft, however you missed out on Lachie Neale from SA. He has been a key contributor throughout the carnival with his work in the midfield, and even though there are knockers on his height, I doubt he'd make it past the 2nd round, let alone 3rd (especially with the SA clubs having high picks in each round).

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. Kavanagh needs to be in first round calculations at a minimum at this stage, and once he if fit again he will likely move up further. Although with Richmond's form lately, maybe you'll move up the draft order with him. :p

I did leave Neale out, but it wasn't an oversight. He is a hard one to place for me, there have been plenty of players like him before who have got through to the rookie draft. His height could be a problem, although as you said he does have midfield form so he isn't limited to playing as a small at either end of the ground. Ultimately, he missed out because I went with players who have a higher ceiling in my opinion. I would probably have him late third to fifth round, maybe a bit low but a potential bargain.

Rory Laird was the small from SA I wanted to get in, but also missed out.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

One thing I'm expecting with this draft, is that different clubs will have vastly different lists and ratings. Could see a few more 'reaches' and 'steals' when the actual draft is compared to the BigFooty consensus.

While the midfield stocks are just as good as any other year, the depth of talls will be tested. A lot of the draftable types have question marks over various aspects of their games. A lot will depend on how clubs measure potential as opposed to performances.

So these are my early rankings of both tall and medium defenders. Bit of a difference to my actual mock draft. Some of the guys will probably be marked down due to size (Wright, Mihocek), while the glimpses of potential that some have shown will likely push them up on draft day (Frost, Richards). But this would be my order anyway.

1. Michael Talia
2. Piva Wright
3. Jordan Lockyer
4. Brody Mihocek
5. Adam Tomlinson
6. Aseri Raikiwasa
7. Sam Frost
8. Fraser McInnes
9. Xavier Richards
10. Michael Hartley

1. Matthew Buntine
2. Jordan Kelly
3. Luke Brown
4. Alex Forster
5. Brandon Ellis

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

Really like the list. Fantastic effort!

One player rating I find interesting is Clay Smith. A couple of similar types have slid in the past. But really like his game. Feels like a slightly shorter Josh Caddy. But at his height similar players have slid in the past - Luke Parker and co. But within those first 3 rounds outside of that top 15 or so you could probably have any player ranked anywhere within that range.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

Clay Smith is a difficult one. He is a good player, and can go forward which obviously helps his standing. But then there are also the likes of Adams, Devon Smith, Waldhuter and Greene. And really only so many of their type will go inside the top 40. And I suppose Clay is just the unlucky one, as the others are perhaps more complete footballers.

Speaking of midfielders, these are my current rankings of midfielders. I kept the outside/flank types separate, but Hoskin-Elliot, McKenzie and Sumner would have featured pretty early in a combined list anyway.

1. Stephen Coniglio
2. Chad Wingard
3. Tom Mitchell
4. Elliot Kavanagh
5. Mitch Grigg
6. Dom Tyson
7. Shane Nelson
8. Devon Smith
9. Sam Milne
10. Taylor Adams
11. Alex Sexton
12. Toby Greene
13. Josh Waldhuter
14. Clay Smith
15. Dylan Buckley

1. Will Hoskin-Elliot
2. Brad McKenzie
3. Liam Sumner
4. Sam Docherty
5. Marley Williams

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

i reckon hawks will either pickup michael talia, adam tomlinson or henry schade with there first pick and tom curran is rated by most people as a 2nd or third round pick so there's no chance we'll pick him up with our first pick

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

I disagree in regards to Curran. And most of what I have heard is that he is rated as an early second round prospect. But I think there is a very good chance that Hawthorn will be forced to use their first pick.

He is just as good a KPP prospect as the others around the same mark. He has good size, and a strong set of hands. But also moves well for someone his size. As I've said before, there will be a lot of different rankings for the various talls on offer. For instance, I have him as my #8 KPF but his versatility means he could play in the back line too. So I think it's feasible that more than one team may have Curran rated as a first rounder.

Talia would suit Hawthorn more than someone like Tomlinson, but if they do want Curran then the choice may be taken away from them.

Adelaide is looking for someone who can assist Scott Thompson in the middle. I know Hoskin-Elliot and McKenzie (Grigg will go before our pick I reckon) are more flankers, with McKenzie being named at FF in 4 of the 5 Championships games. My question is, do you think the 2 players I named could develop into hard nosed in and under players when they gain experience and muscle, or even something lighter but just as effective such as a Pendlebury kind of player?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

I think McKenzie could make a permanent move into the midfield. Although he has played mainly off both flanks and his kicking is his strong point, he is a hard player. And he just seems like one of those players who could play anywhere, and make a career of it. And Hoskin-Elliot is already good in congested situations, so while he would be the lighter type as you suggested, I wouldn't have any real worries there.

I imagine the ideal pick for Adelaide would be Hoskin-Elliot, because he does have that combination of speed and skill. And while the Crows may need inside help, they also lack run and skill on the outside for mine. But Tyson and Kavanagh would definitely help out Thompson in the middle, so they would probably be my top 3 along with Hoskin-Elliot.

Really though, take any of those players I mentioned and actually play Dangerfield in the midfield with Thompson, and it's a decent midfield.

What is Hoskin-Elliot's or even McKenzie's tank like? I know that some of the "smarter" players or more physically mature players find more of the ball in the U18 Championships purely from those attributes but without a strong endurance it can be a while before that ball-winning prowess can really replicate to AFL level standards (Such as the Dangerfield example - dominates in younger or lower levels due to size, but just doesn't have the endurance to be a full fledged midfielder).

I'd imagine they would be the kind of player that would start their AFL careers off the flanks purely because of their size then move into the midfield later on, but perhaps that transition could be made earlier in some cases (Such as Savage or Shiels from Hawthorn). What type are they?

Chris, can you tell me/others what type of midfielder Elliot Kavanah is? Who is similar to in the AFL. Apparently he is pretty good, but hasnt played all year coz of injury. How was he at under 16 level?

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

I could describe Kavanagh as a player, but really this article sums him up pretty well. It does say this...

Kavanagh has drawn comparisons with North Melbourne star Andrew Swallow for his lightning speed, precise foot skills and ability to read the play.

...and I would suggest it is a pretty good comparison in regards to his inside skills and football smarts, but I tend to think Kavanagh is a classier player than Swallow and has better foot skills. Swallow would have the edge in actual clearance work, but Kavanagh also has more versatility to play outside and up forward.

He is an interesting prospect. If he played the Championships, no doubt he would be considered a definite top 10 and possible top 5. But then again, he missed with knee tendonitis so do teams consider him an injury risk? He is one of the more complete midfielders on offer, so I don't think teams will be too put off by injury.

That's awesome news as a swans fan Chris :) How big is the gap between the top 2 and Mitchell in your opinion? And how would you rate him against the father/sons from last year in Wallis and Libba? We've seen Libba come in and have a fantastic debut season just wondering if you think we'll see the same from Mitchell.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

The gap between Coniglio/Wingard and the rest is pretty big at the moment, although there are a few players who could close that gap before the draft (namely Mitchell, Hoskin-Elliot and Kavanagh).

I think Mitchell could have a real impact early on in his career. He isn't big by any means, but he isn't one of those skinny kids who look like they should still be in the U16 either. The guy is a genuine ball winner, and in my opinion probably has a better offensive side to his game than Liberatore.

Re: A Mock Draft In June? Version 2.0

Because Collingwood don't really need anything, so they can afford to go best available regardless of position. They could maybe use a medium sized forward to add another dimension to their forward line, in which case I would go with Duffy even if Kersten was still available.

And just for you, because I know how much you love Witts, my current rankings of the ruckmen...

1. Billy Longer
2. Myles Bolger

3. Jarrod Witts
4. Ben Brown
5. Jay Lever

Testing at the combine will probably show the other chances, but it isn't a strong year for rucks as a fair few of the prospects are more your undersized part time ruck options. Don't expect many rucks to go in the National Draft, teams might be looking to some older players in the rookie draft.
