The issue muddying the waters it that we are drafting 17/18yo's who aren't physically matured, especially the talls. KPP's and Rucks tend to bloom 20+ yo age, so the projection is massive. Mids and flankers are easier to project, plus a failed mid may succeed as a flanker. WRT Freo's picks, Cerra and Brayshaw weren't that complementary with each other. Still, they got great return on him. You don't not pick special players by going for need, and of things are close you should go for need.

At the end of the day, the ability to identify and project talent is the most difficult skill to have. I don't think anyone saw Naughton as a plus KPF.
Look at the consensus on Sonsie from last year and how he has shown this year! Would have loved him on our squad.

I said before, IF at the end of last season we could guarantee Hewett and Broadbent as our first 2 picks we would have taken it and ran. This age group is very variable, and hard to project. Development in first 2-4 years is massive too.
Sonsie is an interesting.

The consensus of the proper BigFooty draft watchers, was that he was a first round pick. Some had him top 10, others had him top 15.

On the Lions board, he was firmly amongst the favourites for our first pick.

There might have been something in his interviews that saw him drop. He was a big Tigers fan growing up, so he’s ended up at his boyhood club.

Does Sheezel go to North at 2 after aschroft?

They have a few young mids already so he fits a need there. Also he is very close to family and would prefer to stay in Melbourne from all reports.
The strong rumours are North were in to Tsatas.

20-25 is where he should have gone, and was just pushed out a few more picks with clubs going for needs. The second round was pretty strong last year as well.

So I've posted this in a few draft threads, but not getting much. Probably a question for the likes of WCE_phil / Monocle etc:

Can someone help me see what I'm supposed to be seeing in Tsatas? Hard to argue with the numbers, but, I dunno, everytime I watch him I'm just...unconvinced.

I see a receiver type who runs more one way than the other, has an albeit impressive knack of getting the ball and carrying it, and doesn't do anything particularly remarkable with it.

From the matches I've watched, I definitely can't see how anyone would want him over Sheezel, and I'd just about be more comfortable if we reached hard for someone like Mackenzie or Humphrey.
Quite a few of the draft watchers on the draft board work for RMC, which means they have to be politic in their answers, as they need to maintain google relationships with the clubs and kids, so they can interview them throughout the season, and particularly in the week before the draft, for their podcasts and videos.

In what way?
Pretty much answered in the posts after.

TLDR version.

He’s been vocally critical on his YouTube platform of all recruiters, and saying he’s a better talent identifier. In many cases identifying specific clubs and saying he would have done a better job.

That would be fantastic for us.

Ashcroft
Tsatsas

then we are up.

Wardlaw - if anything he is the 'too-obvious' choice. Hammies the absolute only concern
Sheezel - not like-for-like with Junior leaving, but creativity in the forward line is something we are losing, so adding that back in would be beneficial

Outside of those 2 I think we could/may trade back if an offer comes from Essendon, Gold Coast (assuming they hold Adelaide's pick) or Hawthorn.

There is a chance if we do a deal with Essendon that they take Sheezel, GWS take a tall (Cadman or Busslinger) and we still get Wardlaw. Even if not there are still a small handful of players that really fit our needs.

If we were to trade back (lets say for an early 2nd round as the steak knives), plus having 20, 26, 27 (rioli) already - there would certainly be enough currency to try to nab another 1st round pick (early teens likely). There would be a few talls in that range (tall forwards who were rated at the start of the year, but have slipped slightly), which I think would be a good move.

Bailey Humphrey still a bit of a dark horse also.

On Sonsie, went from top 5 early to outside top 20... judging from Y1, looks maybe top 5 in a redraft. I really liked him, shades of Cotchin IMHO, could not understand dropping out of R1.

That was always the pre draft comparison as a player likeness.

could not understand dropping out of R1.

It happens most years that there is a major slider or two.

It’s just the way the ducks line up, it’s the vagaries of how different Clubs rate players, mixed with Club needs and then when runs on certain positional groups happen at what point in the draft.

It’s why I really want us to hold onto our second round pick, as I am confident that we either get a slider (like Sonsie was) and if not a slider, this year I can see some really good prospects for us at that pick range, both quality and positionally.

Like I have said a few times now, we have a very good draft hand…..now over to RO’B to nail the draft.

I'd really like to know if there were offers to trade further down last year. Honestly, there were a lot of really even players (Sonsie, Johnson, Van Rooyen) that I'd happily have taken.

If we get a future 200 game premiership player with pick 3 in this years draft, I’m taking that

Always a spot on the West Coast Big Footy Board for a another whipping boy.

With the probable departure of Nelson there will be a “ Situation Vacant “ sign being installed very shortly.

Each year we need a winner of the Whipping Boy of the Year.

Otherwise know as:

The Chris Masten Medal 🎖

Gaff already has that title all sewn up.
