Josh Green To Return To Training

Cian Hanley will continue his rehabilitation from groin surgery.

Hanley spent much 2015 recovering from his ACL, before a decision was made by Lions medical staff that the 19-year old would require groin surgery.

“Cian’s on the indefinite list at the moment.

“He’s got a really complex groin problem that’s going to take some time to settle.”

Anymore news on where Cian is at?
Sitting near us at the Sydney game. Someone asked him how long till you're back out there and he said soon, not sure if it weather it was just a general response or he is making progress tho.

People have talked about C Hanley eventually coming back but has he actually played a game in anger yet? And if so, how did he go?

It has been a strange career for him so far. He really hasn't had a chance to show what he can do.

At pre match function at mcg.

Marty Francis just said that Cian has a genetic issue that he simply must grow through. The club does not expect him to train at all this year.

Bigger claim though, is that he then said that he 'expects Cian to have a twelve year afl career, and in years to come we won't worry about his first wasted two years.'

Big call. Hope he's right.

Sounds like they'll be persisting with him next year. I thought the club might consider cutting him at the end of this season due to his body not being up to it.

Surprised by that too, hearing it.

He can stay on the rookie list at least.

Player Reviews: No. 36 - 40

The young Irishman was unable to display the pace and agility both he and his brother Pearce are known for as he continues to rehabilitate from an unfortunate run of injuries. Upon being recruited as an International Rookie in 2014, Hanley was lauded for his work ethic and leadership abilities and has applied himself as such to his rehabilitation as he aims to make his AFL debut in 2017.

Coach’s notes

Cian was in rehab throughout the year, unfortunately his body has had some challenges in adjusting to the rigours of the AFL system. He hasn’t played a game for us yet, but we’re hoping that after two years of solid rehab and building his resilience up that he’ll be able to play some game time next year in 2017.

Training accident delays Mathieson's 2017

In better news, Cian Hanley is set to play his first game of Australian Rules Football on the weekend, when he lines up for the Lions NEAFL side in Saturday’s practice match against the Gold Coast SUNS NEAFL team.

The 20-year-old Irish recruit will return after two tough years battling injury – first an ACL and then groin problems.

“Cian Hanley, after two years of not playing, he will play for the first time,” Blanch said.

“It’s been tough for Cian, he’s had a number of problems but has worked really hard and he’s got a good result.”

The poor kid is only 15, so tough for the family....particularly for Pearce and Cian being so far away from home.

Thoughts to all of them..

Hanley brothers return to Ireland for 'family matter'

GOLD Coast recruit Pearce Hanley and his brother Cian, a Lions rookie, will return to Ireland to deal with a private family matter.

The Suns and Lions released a joint statement on Sunday evening confirming the brothers will return to their homeland.

Pearce spent time in Ireland over the Christmas break to be with his family, including younger brother Tommy, who is suffering stage four cancer.

"Both clubs will provide all the support the family needs during this challenging time," the statement said.

Pearce made his Suns debut in Saturday night's QClash, collecting 17 touches in the narrow two-point loss.

Meanwhile, Cian played his first match in Lions colours in a NEAFL practice match against Gold Coast.

The 21-year-old has endured a horror run since being recruited as an international rookie at the end of 2014, with a knee reconstruction keeping him out in 2015 and ongoing groin problems sidelining him for all of last year.

'Another young man taken too soon' - Tributes pour in after brother (16) of Mayo AFL duo loses battle with cancer

Tributes have been paid to Tommy Hanley, the younger brother of Mayo AFL players Pearce and Cian, who has passed away following an illness.

The 16-year-old had been unwell for some time, with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson posting a get well soon video to Hanley online in 2016. Pearce and Cian Hanley returned home to be with their brother last week, with duo granted leave from their AFL clubs.
