OK so for some reason, i've had this sudden obsession with acquiring an epic strategy game that will immerse me and keep me entertained for many a sleepless night.

I've narrowed it down to 2, however i've never played either of these games.. can someone offer some advice?

(yes i am aware that there are sequels to these 2 classics coming out soon)

Thanks

I never really got into Civ. I had a heap of fun with Rome Total War though. I found it much more interesting than the Medieval and Empire Total War games. The historical aspect of it was awesome.

The only thing that stopped me playing was a corrupt save game!

Go pick it up mate. It's dirt cheap.

Rome: Total War is by far my favourite game. Truly awesome and immense.

Civilisation series is also good as well though.

Really, they're both pretty cheap these days...could probably get both.

Civ 4 is such an awesome game, but I'm more of a turn based strategy fan as opposed to RTS. Civ 4 community is massive too... check out www.civfanatics.com, its encyclopedic coverage of all CIV games (especially Civ 4) is brilliant. Their user generated strategy guides and game walkthroughs are also fantastic learning tools if you are new to the game.

If you want a real epic strategy game (and epic challenge) highly recommend you try Galactic Civilization II. By far the deepest of all the turn based strategy games around, AI tactics far more advanced, and each successive expansion pack made it better and better. Best AI out of any game I've ever played, including their taunting of you when they think they've got you on the ropes.

Only thing missing is multi player, but the AI is so awesome you don't really miss it. Only $US39.95 for game plus the three expansion packs... talk about value. This would be my "desert island game", you could play it for 10 years and each game would still feel unique.

Check it out here...

If I were you I'd get all three (Civ 4, Rome TW, Gal Civ II), hunt around and they'd cost you only slightly more than a brand new game combined.

Civ 4 is one of the best games ever made. Years after I first played it I can still chuck it on and enjoy the game

I agree & if you get civ 4 & like it you can look to upgrade to civ 5 when it comes out in the near future.

Another older game I liked was rise of nations, but not as controlled game play as Rome, when you attack your army goes nuts & does its own thing so you have to keep on re focusing them.

Went into the game store and found Rome: total war for $10  not only that, but a choice of 2 games for 1 :D

started off thinking meh. Then after defending a population outnumbered 2:1 with mainly flaming bow and arrows, I was starting to see what all the fuss was about. Was addicted and fun for a good 10 or so hours. Then it got to being addicting but annoying, as in not really enjoying it so much but continually going to 1 more turn to complete 1 more thing.

Now it's just annoying. The battles are repetetive, especially when the same army comes over and over and over again slowly wearing your troop numbers down. Was good fun for a while, but I'm now over it. Well worth the $10.

Total War games (and Rome, in particular) are pretty easy, as the AI isn't all that great, which makes things get a little boring after a while. The grand campaign is what usually keeps me going as the battles start to get a little too repetitive. Still, you can opt to skip battles, and Empire introduces naval warfare which keeps things a little more interesting.

I use to skip the battles. Would build a massive army and let them take care of it.
I was far more interested in the strategic side of building your empire all over the world and keeping your cities wealthy and population happy.
