Hi Team,

I was just reading the replay thread and this came in my mind how important these two players are in the effectiveness of our backline.

With Clancee being an enforcer who puts his body on the line at whatever the cost, not the most excuisite but does the job and works hard. Whilst Ibbo the importance of his intercept marks to prevent balls from being lobbed into our backline.

Two things we missed in the GF physical toughness when needed i.e. the duffield stuff up on gunston being discussed and the plenty of intercept marks that would have helped us. Especially with Ibbos smartness.

How important do you think these 2 are and who will come out to let them in?

Ibbo will certainly come back into the team as I believe our current best back 6 is:
Spurr Dawson Ibbotson
Duffield McPharlin Johnson

Maybe Sutcliffe or Suban out

Sutcliffe, Sheridan , Lachie and deBoer will be under the most pressure to hold their spots ahead of Ibbo, Sylvia and Gumbleton.

Ibbotson for Sutcliffe

Sylvia for de Boer

Gumbleton for Lachie standing on Sheridan's shoulders.

Yep. Like for like.

We cannot keep all the mids and smalls in the side as well as the new talls we have acquired.
Someone is going to make room for Gumbleton and I am suggesting lachie will be under pressure along with a few others.

Yes I realise that and agree. Gumby presents a pretty interesting problem though. I like having our runners. I think we will see him in for the injured Clarke to start with and see how that goes. A little bit of time in the ruck.

Both really important players with exquisite kicks. Kicking is so important and these to have it. Both these players put their body on the line. They are also two quite different players but both could easily fit into our backline. Ibbotson for me was borderline all australian this year when fit so if he plays like that he will be a lock. Sutcliffe to make way for Ibbo. Clancee is a player who could get even better as I think some people forget how young he is and he has improved through the roof over the last 2 seasons.its too hard to put a best 22 together now because of our depth so I think a few players will be rotated into the team this year due to injury or form. Sutcliffe I really rate and he's definitely part of our future. Ibbo if fit a definite and Clancee to come in and out of the team at various stages. But love em both

With names like Subcliffe and Subin, they were born to wear the Green vest.

To be honest though, handy players to have rested on the bench.

I rewatched round 12 game of 2013 , the Collingwood game today on fox .
Ibbo was in all Australian form and Clancee was putting his body on the line time and time again .
The highlight for me was RTB not rushing out to the boys at 3\4 time but moving the magnets on the board and grafting the plan to humble the Pies .
Dawson into the ruck ,Walters on the ball , Hannath to full forward tell me if anyone saw that coming not me or anyone who I spoke to after the game .
Players missing Fyfe , Pavlich , Sandilands ,Hill , Kepler ,Clarke and Griff does his knee in the second quarter .
Buckley must have been licking his lips in anticipation of 4 points easy before the game and after the shocking first 2 quarters and being down 60 points wondering WTF but when Griff went down and the Pies lifted to within 2or 3 points at 3\4 time he must have thought that he had us and like Freo of old we would go into our shell and not come out and play
but what a way to finish off a game and Mothers Day as well .

i REMember the magneton game being played by RTB and he was only 1 level of his personal best so he stayed in the dug out and the fox commentry was like wtf? and wallah we redeemed ourself, with dawsons loosing ruck taps but getting the ball on the ground, roving his oppositions taps !!!

Clancee is so crucial to rebounding as much as his off the ball defence is. Think he has something like 80% or more Disposal efficieny? Just missed his big body at crucial times in the GF, he uses it well and intimidates his opponent. But Sutcliffe did a quality job on Rioli to be fair, not easy getting that job and let alone in the big dance.. He was always on him and negated him when he could. Cyril ended up with one goal and for a chicken wing tackle HTB right in front of goal which was up there as one of the decisions of the game o_O

agree big time missing body contact bonecrushing clancee

I usually hate these threads because everyone has great depth this time of the year but it would be fantastic if we can stay injury free and actually choose a 22 from a full list.

You would think Ibbo is best 22 simply because he doesn't seem to have any competition for that "big bodied but mobile fourth tall" role that was vacated by McPhee and Ross seems to love. So really you'd think it's going to come down to Clancee vs Duffman as the rebounding defender. At this stage it's hard to see Duff losing the spot as he has never, not performed but he is getting on in age so Clancee could overtake him. Other guys like Suban and Sutty are mids who'd only play other roles as part of a rotation or if injuries make it absolutely necessary. Of these two Suban is usually more valuable as he's more comfortable playing inside/outside as well as back and forward as required. I get the feeling Sutty is more restricted as an outside running player. That said he is certainly a great team player.

As for the second tall forward spot we've got Keps, Tabs and Gumby. Keps might get it and he can kick goals but he doesn't seem to play like a true tall forward for mine. I see him as a utility who by virtue of being freakishly tall has pushed him into that tall forward spot. Gumby is a better bet as a true tall forward and has the experience but Tabs could step up. Will have to wait for the season to start to see what happens there. My money is on Gumby getting first crack as the proven option with Tabs to earn his spot via the WAFL. Of course other rucks can play tall as well but I think Ross values the best role players over the best players so this makes it harder for the part-timers.

Woah woah woah, Michael "Son son" Walters is an exquisite kick. That is all.

Clancee and ibbo both missed the grand final and in my opinion where the reason we lost due to theses facts
Both take good intercept marks and apply pressure on opposition forwards in marking contests
Both are very good under extreme pressure from opposition players and don't panic in disposal of the ball .
Both are excellent passes of the ball by hand and foot .
We missed Clancee's ability to kick a 50 metre pass to a player in space who could then deliver the ball lace up to the forwards .
Lastly the way they work with the other defenders to give options other than just kicking it to a contest and hope that someone will take a pack mark.
They are always there offering support and are ready to back up and run again and again not only in the back line but up forward as well .

We lost by 15 points, so of course if we had our best 22 out there we woulda/shoulda won. Then Hawthorn supporters would be making similar posts on their Board (like Cats fans are). Reality is we had a chance to win it with the players who were out there, and they weren't good enough on the day.
