Timeline of key moments in the investigation:

27 January 1996: Sarah Spiers, 18, goes missing from outside a Claremont nightclub after celebrating Australia Day with friends.

9 June 1996: Childcare worker, Jane Rimmer, 23, goes missing from outside the Continental Hotel in Claremont after drinking with friends.

10 June 1996: Police link the disappearances of Jane Rimmer and Sarah Spiers, and launch Operation Macro.

3 August, 1996: Jane Rimmer's naked and partly decomposed body is found in bushland in Wellard by a passerby. It had been lightly covered by leaves and twigs and was not visible from the road.

14/15 March, 1997: Lawyer, Ciara Glennon disappears from Claremont after last being seen near Bay View Terrace after drinking with work colleague just after midnight.

3 April, 1997: Ciara's body, partly clothed, was found in scrub 45 kilometres north of Perth near Pipidinny Road. It was hidden under branches, but not buried. A witness claimed he saw a taxi with its headlights off in the area the night Ciara disappeared. Police later told media they believed the killer had used "planned disposal sites" and dumped the women's bodies soon after their abductions. Following her disappearance, thousands of taxi drivers gave saliva samples and more than 1000 taxis were inspected.

October 2004: Having investigated somewhere in the region of 3000 people over the course of the operation police consider disbanding the task force - after it became the most expensive in Australian history.

August 2008: Police release unseen CCTV footage of Jane Rimmer exchanging a greeting with an unidentified man outside the Continental Hotel in Claremont the night she was abducted.

2014: Rumours swelled that detectives were close to an arrest. The rumours were swiftly quashed by police.

October 2015: The Post reveals a breakthrough in the case, a first in years of silence - claiming police had linked the rape of a teenager in Karrakatta years earlier. Speculation that it provided a new forensic link

27 January, 2016: Sarah Spiers' parents marked twenty years since her disappearance.

22 December, 2016: Police swarm on a Kewdale house, arresting a male occupant and seizing evidence from the property. The man was taken into custody.

TIMELINE AS SET OUT BY THE PROSECUTION:

February 1988
Huntingdale attack charges: A 19-year-old Mr Edwards, living in his Huntingdale home with his family, is accused of entering a woman’s house and attacking her inside her bedroom by sitting on her back and attempting to force fabric into her mouth. She struggles and he runs from the house.

Proposed evidence The attacker leaves behind a women’s kimono stained with his semen DNA profile. The state alleges the DNA matches Mr Edwards' DNA profile.

1988
Huntingdale prowler: The state alleges Mr Edwards prowled the streets within a one kilometre radius of his home, stealing women’s underwear and night gowns, and on occasion wearing them.

Proposed evidence The prowler leaves behind finger and palm prints and foot impressions at a residence. The state alleges the fingerprints match Mr Edwards'.

May 1990
Hollywood Hospital assault: Mr Edwards confesses to attempting to drag a young social worker into a toilet block at

Hollywood Hospital, where he was contracted for work at the time.

Mr Edwards gagged the woman with a piece of cloth, but she managed to fight him off.

Police later found cable ties in his pockets. The incident occurred after Mr Edwards had learned his then-girlfriend had cheated on him.

Proposed evidence Mr Edwards’ fingerprints were taken and entered into the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

May 1990
Mr Edwards pleads guilty to the common assault of a social worker. He is sentenced in June to two years’ probation. He keeps his job at Telstra.

February 1995
Karrakatta Cemetery rape charge: Mr Edwards is accused of abducting and raping a 17-year-old girl late at night as she walked to a friend’s house from Club Bay View in Claremont. He allegedly bound and gagged the teenager, and placed a hood over her head, before driving her to the cemetery to rape her.

Proposed evidence DNA of the Karrakatta cemetery rapist is taken from the victim, who attends hospital that evening. The state alleges it matches Mr Edwards' DNA profile.

January 1996
Mr Edwards’ marriage begins to break down and he learns his wife is having an affair. She moves out of their home, leaving him alone.

January 1996
Sarah Spiers murder charge: Sarah Spiers, 18, is last seen leaning on a Telstra bollard waiting for a taxi in Claremont after a night out with friends. The taxi arrives soon after but Sarah is already gone.

Around 20 minutes later, witnesses in Mosman Park hear “blood curdling screams” and a car matching the description of Mr Edwards’ is seen in the vicinity parked on the wrong side of the road with its lights on.

May 1996
Mr Edwards learns his wife is pregnant to another man.

June 1996
Jane Rimmer murder charge: Ms Rimmer, 23, is allegedly taken from Claremont by Mr Edwards and murdered in Wellard, where her body was later found in bushland.

Her cause of death is unknown as her remains had decomposed, but a post-mortem noted a ‘prominent defect’ to her neck.

Proposed evidence A Telstra-branded knife was found on the same road as Ms Rimmer’s remains. As a Telstra technician, Mr Edwards was issued with the same type of Telstra knife prior to the Claremont killings.

Proposed evidence Fibres found in Ms Rimmer’s hair match the car seat fibres in the make and model of car Mr Edwards was driving at the time.

October to December 1996

Mr Edwards allegedly had a brief relationship with an older woman.

1995/96/97
The state alleges a man matching Mr Edwards’ description and driving a Telstra car offered young women in the western suburbs lifts home late at night. It’s alleged he picked up women on five occasions and dropped them at their requested destination.

March 1997

Ciara Glennon murder charge: Ms Glennon, 27, is murdered after allegedly being taken by Mr Edwards following a night out with friends in Claremont.

The lawyer’s body is later found in bushland in Eglinton, covered in a “strikingly similar way” to Ms Rimmer’s body.

Her cause of death is a cut to the throat.

Proposed evidence The state alleges Mr Edwards’ DNA was found underneath Ms Glennon’s fingernails.

Proposed evidence The state alleges fibres found in Ms Glennon’s hair match fibres found in the car seat of the make and model of vehicle Mr Edwards was driving at the time.

Proposed evidence Mr Edwards was meant to stay over at a friend’s house the night Ms Glennon was murdered, but instead arrived mid-morning the next day. He said he was late because he was trying to reconcile with his wife, which the state claims was a lie.

April 1997
Mr Edwards meets the woman who would go on to become his second wife.

December 2016
Mr Edwards is allegedly editing erotic stories involving abduction and sexual assault themes in the days before his arrest.

December 2016
Police conducting cold case reviews test a kimono found at a 1988 Huntingdale assault for DNA evidence and allegedly find DNA matching the profile of the Claremont serial killer. The case is re-investigated.

Proposed evidence Mr Edwards' fingerprints are allegedly found at a house scoped by the Huntingdale prowler.

December 2016
Mr Edwards is arrested by police at his Kewdale home and charged.

September, 2018
Mr Edwards pleads not guilty to all charges against him.

Claremont serial killings: accused Bradley Robert Edwards injured in prison

WA News
The man accused of the Claremont serial killings has been injured in prison.
Bradley Robert Edwards, 50, was due to appear in the Supreme Court today for the start of a three-day pre-trial hearing into what evidence should be included in the case.
But before the matter began Justice Stephen Hall told the courtroom the matter would be adjourned until he can find out more information.
It is understood Mr Edwards was found this morning with injuries to his neck in a shower block in prison. The incident - and how he received those injuries - is under investigation.

18th February, 2019 (via the ABC)

WA Corrective Services Minister Fran Logan later revealed Mr Edwards had been attacked in a shower block and had suffered a "relatively minor" ear injury.

"At this stage [prison authorities] believe it was an attack by another prisoner. It occurred in the shower and it occurred about 20 minutes after the prisoners were unlocked," he said.

"Unfortunately prisons are full of people who are quite violent and some who are disturbed, and it's not unusual for prisoners to go at each other and sometimes attack each other.

Mr Logan said investigations were underway into how the attack happened.

18th February, 2019.

Speaking this afternoon, WA’s commissioner of prisons Tony Hassall said that a prison officer found Mr Edwards at 7.55am in the shower block in the secure unit of Hakea this morning, bleeding from the right ear and with a pencil nearby.

Mr Hassall said when officers found Mr Edwards bleeding from his right ear, he refused to tell them what had happened.

But authorities from the Department of Corrective Services and police have launched a full investigation into what happened, and how the 50 year-old could be kept safe until his trial, which is due to start later this year.

“He was asked that question (about what happened) and the information I got was he was refusing to speak to the officers that found him,” Mr Hassall said.

“I have asked the deputy commissioner for prisons to go over to the prison to see what further controls, if any, we can put around him when he comes back.”

St John Ambulance confirmed they were called to Hakea prison this morning at 8.53am to reports a 50-year-old man had been found in a shower block with injuries to his ear.

He was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital under normal road speed.

"Claremont serial killer victim Ciara Glennon had injuries consistent with her throat being cut and had accused man Bradley Robert Edwards' DNA under her fingernails, the Supreme Court was told today."

"She said Mr Edwards' DNA was also detected from intimate swabs taken from the 17-year-old girl who was abducted and raped at Karrakatta Cemetery in 1995. "

'Ms Barbagallo said Mr Edwards had also been convicted of common assault, which he pleaded guilty to and was sentenced to two years probation, relating to a May 1990 incident in which he attacked and tried to drag a female social worker into a toilet cubicle while he worked at Hollywood Hospital as a telco worker for Telstra, then known as Telecom. The woman kicked Mr Edwards and was able to break free and Mr Edwards was found to have cable ties in his pocket, the court was told."

Fetish

Prosecutors: In 1988, at the time of the Huntingdale prowler series, the accused was an "introverted and socially awkward man" who was not involved in any intimate relationships.

He had a long standing tendency to collect women's underwear.

It is the State's case that he had a fetish for such items.

19/02/2019 14:04
Hollywood Hospital

Prosecutors: Mr Edwards met his first wife. This had a significant impact on him.

In 1990, in the early hours of the morning, Mr Edwards allegedly attacked a senior social worker when he was working at Hollywood Hospital.

He went into her office, went into the toilets, came out and attacked the woman from behind.

Mr Edwards allegedly put material over the woman's mouth as she struggled and tried to drag her into the toilets.

The victim kicked him and broke free. Mr Edwards apologised. Police allegedly found cable ties in his pocket.

Telstra living witness

Prosecutors: Between 1995 and 1997 there were a series of incidents involving a male driving around the Claremont area approaching young women who were alone.

The driver was either in a Telstra car or identified himself as someone who worked for Telstra

There are five occasions that form part of the series.

Early December 1995, a man driving a white van along Stirling Highway in Claremont offered a lift to a woman walking alone.

The woman told the man about a fight she had with her boyfriend.

The man told her he worked for Telstra and was "looking for damsels in distress just like her".

He drove her to her requested destination. He grabbed her at least once and tried to kiss her when they arrived.

19/02/2019 13:25
More on Telstra

Prosecutors are outlining similar incidents in Claremont involving a man who was in a Telstra car or who identified himself as someone who worked for Telstra.

In one incident, the man drove three intoxicated young people to Shenton Park.

The description of the driver "very broadly" does not exclude Mr Edwards, according to prosecutors.

19/02/2019 13:27
Telstra driver

Prosecutors: During this period in 1996 the accused worked for Telstra and had access to a Telstra car.

The victim gets help

The teen waited in the bush until she heard her attacker leave. She ran to a nearby nursing home for help.

No one came to her aid. She managed to free one hand from a restraint and run to a phone box.

She called her parents and asked her dad to come and get her before making her way to Hollywood Hospital, cords still around her wrist.

She told a nurse she had been raped.

At some point a security guard allegedly saw a white van that appeared to have telco markings on it drive past the hospital.

DNA taken from the complainant allegedly matched the accused. He is a complete stranger to the victim, according to prosecutors.

19/02/2019 13:31
Karrakatta allegations

On Sunday 12 February 1995, a 17-year-old was walking to a friend's house after a night out in Claremont.

When she walked through a park the accused allegedly grabbed her from behind and pushed her to the ground.

He allegedly bound her hands with a cord and forced a piece of cloth into her mouth.

It is alleged he put her in his car and put a hood over her head before driving her to an isolated area of Karakatta cemetery,

The teen was allegedly sexually assaulted in "various ways"

Sarah Spiers

Sarah Spiers was last seen in Claremont in January 1996.

She made a phone call and was waiting for a taxi when she disappeared.

Between 2.30am and 3am that same morning there were a series of bloodcurdling screams heard in the Mosman Park area.

A witness saw a white or cream coloured vehicle parked on the wrong side of the street near a Telstra phonebox.

Jane Rimmer

Jane Rimmer was last seen on 9 June, 1996 in Claremont.

Her body was found in Wellard 55 days after she was last seen alive. Two witnesses in the area had heard a loud, high-pitched female scream that stopped abruptly.

A knife was found in the area. Two similar knives were allegedly found in the accused's toolbox.

A post-mortem examination of Ms RImmer's body was done but a cause of death could not be determined because of the decomposition.

There were fibres in her hair. They allegedly correspond to seat inserts of a particular car that has been identified as a 1996 Holden Commodore or something similar.

The accused allegedly had access to a 1996 Holden Commodore at the time.

Ciara Glennon

Eighteen days after Ciara Glennon went missing in Claremont in March 1997 her body was found in Eglinton.

She had injuries consistent with her throat being cut and fibres in her hair that allegedly corresponded with fibres from a car Mr Edwards had access to at the time.

The car was seized by police in December 2016.

The State's case is that Mr Edwards took Ms Glennon from Claremont, willfully murdered her and dumped her body.

Depraved computer stories

State: stories written in the first person were found on computers. They are predominantly about someone of some time ago.

Those stories allegedly reference the attacking or abduction of women and non-consensual sex.

State: one of those stories, the "Chloe story" makes reference to abducting a woman, taking her clothes off, binding her and sexually assaulting her.

The State argues it is clear Mr Edwards possessed, authored or contributed to the stories.

The content has been described as "unusual and depraved".

Police interview

The accused was interviewed by police in December 2016.

He allegedly denied any involvement in the offences.

  • His DNA on the Karrakatta victim
  • His DNA from or around the fingernails of Ciara Glennon

19/02/2019 14:05
Prowling tendency

The State: The Huntingdale offences show a tendency for him to prowl in an area of familiarity.

19/02/2019 14:47
Huntingdale and Claremont

The State says in Huntingdale Mr Edwards allegedly moved around on foot about 1km from his home. He allegedly "created and seized" opportunities effectively motivated by his underwear fetish.

The State says during the Claremont "Telstra living witness" series he allegedly seized and created opportunities to attack young women.

The State says there was an "evolution".

19/02/2019 13:57
Allegations

It is important to note the comments from the prosecutor are allegations, there is no evidence before the court.

19/02/2019 13:55
Prowler

State: All of the Huntingdale offences were within one kilometre of Mr Edwards' home. They came to an end around the same time the accused went to Bali with his family.

All offences happened at night and involved women's underwear or kimonos.

Prosecutors say this was at a time when Mr Edwards allegedly had a fetish for such items.

19/02/2019 14:46
Back to Huntingdale prowler

State says the accused had a tendency to prowl an area at night time in a distinctive manner.

"He has moved about the Huntingdale area in a way to allow him to seize and create opportunities"

Prosecutors say he prowled on foot in Huntingdale and in a car in Claremont during the "Telstra living witness" series.

19/02/2019 14:15
Women's underwear

State: In the evidence of Mr Edward's second wife she talks about him dressing up in women's clothes. At Mr Edward's house police allegedly found homemade sex toys and stockings with holes cut in them.

Prosecutors are arguing his fetish for women's undergarments is long-standing.

19/02/2019 14:12
Sexual gratification

State: Mr Edwards' second wife talks about occasions where he has been in stockings. Where he has masturbated into sandwich bags while wearing women's undergarments.

19/02/2019 14:31
Cottesloe

Prosecutors are arguing Mr Edward's had a work association with Cottesloe, was involved in swimming championships in the area and worked out of Congdon Street.

They say that was the area where a man was seen driving around in a Telstra car inviting young women to get in for a lift.

19/02/2019 14:28
Police interview

The State says Mr Edwards told police he had nothing to do with the Claremont area, but they argue he is familiar with the western suburbs.

19/02/2019 14:24
Familiarity

State: "He was familiar with Huntingdale, he grew up and he lived there.

"He worked in and around that Claremont area for some years. He socialised in that area, the OBH, Leederville, in and around those locations."

19/02/2019 14:19
Prowling awareness

State: Both examples of prowling occurred when there was heightened awareness in the community about what was going on.

In Huntingdale, people were talking about a prowler in the area. Despite that, the assailant allegedly continued.

19/02/2019 14:53
Huntingdale escalation

State: There is an escalation of offending even with the Huntingdale prowler series. It started with stealing clothes from clotheslines, moved to breaking into houses and sifting through clothes and ultimately led up to an alleged sexual assault.

Nicholas story

State: There is a "Nicholas story" that involves a male driving around and abducting intoxicated women.

19/02/2019 14:57
More on the stories

State: "The stories were definitely altered over the course of the time that this accused lived at the house and on his own at that house".

There were allegedly modifications to the stories from July 2014 to December 2016.

Mr Edwards was arrested in December 2016.

Bradley Robert Edwards was going through a marriage breakdown and his wife was having an affair at the time Sarah Spiers went missing in 1996, the Supreme Court has heard.

Prosecutor Carmel Barbagallo said that in the January in which Ms Spiers went missing, Mr Edwards’ first wife moved out of the marital home in Huntingdale.

She claims that she then moved in with the man she was having an affair with.

“Not only did she leave him, but she left him alone in the matrimonial home,” Ms Barbagallo said.

The State does not say the affairs were the reason for the alleged offending. But they say it is notable that the alleged events occurred when Mr Edwards was under ‘extreme stress’.

“He was drinking a lot, being checked on by his friends,” Ms Barbagallo added.

Mr Edwards’ first wife later told him she was pregnant to the man she had left him for the court heard.
