As fantastic as Matthew Egan was in 2007, it really makes me cringe to hear people say that he plays on the best forward most weeks, because not only is it misleading but is casts doubts over Scarlett's heroics.

Firstly, I define "BEST" forward as the oppositions most dangerous and legitimate goal scoring threat.
NOT
Necessarily the oppositions most profiled forward, such is the case at St. Kilda with Riewoldt and Port with Tredrea.

Whilst they may not always be the best 'players', they are the most important player to stop when defending.

Here is a list of who I think is each team's most DANGEROUS, GOAL- KICKING forward and which Cats backman played on them in 2007. If you disagree let me know:

Adelaide- Scott Welsh (M. Scarlett)
Brisbane- Jonathan Brown (M. Egan)
Carlton- Brendan Fevola (M. Scarlett)
Collingwood- Anthony Rocca (M. Scarlett)
Essendon- Scott Lucas (M. Scarlett)
Fremantle- Matthew Pavlich (M. Egan)
Hawthorn- Lance Franklin (A. Mackie)
Kangaroos- Corey Jones (T. Harley)
Melbourne- David Nietz (did not play; M. Scarlett would have)
Port Adelaide- Brett Ebert (M. Scarlett/ J. Hunt)
Richmond- Matthew Richardson (M. Egan)
St. Kilda- Fraser Gerhig (M. Scarlett)
Sydney- Barry Hall (did not play; M. Scarlett would have)
West Coast- Quinten Lynch (M. Scarlett)
Western Bulldogs- Brad Johnson (M. Scarlett/ T. Harley)

Looks pretty in favour of Scarlett to me. What needs to be clarified is that Scarlett plays FB, thus he mans the FF. Egan plays CHB and mans the CHF.

If the best forward is the FF, he's Scarlo's and visa versa.

Rest assured these match- ups are 100% correct.

Fair points mate, good research. I think you'd find that most people around here still expect Egan will improve and is not the superstar that Scarlo is yet, despite being very good.

Egan is a champion defender in the making no doubt, I just hate ignorant members of the media and public casting dispersions over Scarlett's game.

Big JB Jonathon Brown is the best foward in the league. Egan killed him the first time and in round 22 was beating him again. Egan broke his foot, Scarlet moved onto Brown, Brown kicked 7!

Egan took the best foward every week no questions asked!!!

no he didn't.

Cant we just say they shared? i mean cmon who gives a shit now,The 07 season is in the past and i dont think matty or ego would give a shit who they plaued on or not so, what is the point ?

That is perfectly fine, I just wanted to clarify that in fact Egan didn't take the best forward MOST weeks, as was implied by many who obviously seldom watched the Cats play, or who have a very distorted view of what it means to be the BEST forward.

If you can successfully prove your point as I did, then we may take you seriously.

Until then...

Should have been perhaps "biggest forward" instead, with the exceptions of Fevola, Lynch, Gehrig and Rocca, who Scarlo plays on due to their near complete lack of accountability, and Hall, who Scarlo likes to play on.

I think it's fair to keep in mind then when Egan played the rnd 15 game against Collingwood he was good but not great. I don't think he won the battle that day (one on one).

Having said that, modern footy is not one guy versus another, it's about a defensive spread or group against another, and Ego is a highly capable part of a highly successful defense team.

Biggest ain't always the best...

And I don't think the Geelong match committee would sit down each week and pick out who they think is the least accountable key forward and say "there's Scarlett's man."

That's perhaps a little far fetched.

All those players you mentioned are FF's, so it should be expected Scarlo would take them.

I would have thought that Travis Cloke was your best forward.

All due respect to Rocca he's inconsistant where as Clokes only
worry is his kicking sometimes (great lead up player in my view
Collingwood's best)

Egan would always get Cloke

Hall is CHF, O'Loughlin is the FF. The defenders generally choose amongst themselves the match-ups, I think, at the Cattery. Scarlett is the most senior, picks his man.

Egan is a CHB who usually plays on the CHF of the opposing team. No-one I know has said this crap about him playing on the "best forward" in a match. Just because some person yabbers on like this on the main board doesn't mean we do here.

No, No, No.

Didn't you hear all the unwarranted commotion leading into the first final against the Kangaroos?

Egan got injured, Brown killed Scarlett and all of a sudden the football media were saying Geelong are in trouble because Scarlett would have to take the best forward, "which he rarely did".

It was all complete bullshit. Complete wrong, and completely misguided.

To be fair, it wasn't all of them, not the good ones. But blokes like Tim Watson were leading the charge, definetely.

I am just so glad Scarlett came out and stuck it up all those who doubted him, in a big, big way.

I am not bagging Matty Egan at all, I just wanted to hear some more Geelong fans opinions on the matter, because I posted this notion on the "Egan as a mobile ruckman" thread and some Cats fans said I was wrong.

I think the best way to put it is that they shared the duties. Scarlo took the power forward closer to goal eg Fev, Tarrant, Rocca as he shud considering he is our full back, and Egan took the power forward further up the ground eg. Pav, Brown, Cloak. Its didnt matter who was the better forward i think it was all about the position they played. to say one player took the #1 forward "Most" of the time is a total lie. Scarlo is a Full Back he plays on the Full Forward, Egan is a CHB he plays on the CHF whether they are the most dangerous or not. It's really that simple :thumbsu:

Precisely, thank- you, nicely summed up. My original sentiments exactly. Well done.
