Struggling to understand why the Sydney Swans passed on Ed Clarke a NSW kid and opted for Jarred Moore from Melbourne.

Both are 178cm onballers with clean hands and good foot skills. Both have been dominant in their onball roles with their respective clubs. Clarke is a goal kicking, natural rover who is hard to stop when he powering forward. This year I have seen him kick bags of 4 and 5 with several being 50 metre goals on the run.

Both are inside players who get their own footy although alot of Moores possessions at Dandenong were Handball Receives.

I liked Moore in the 6 or 7 games that I have seen but I loved Clarke in his 6 or 7 games. In them he was either BOG or that close to BOG it wasn't funny.

I would love to know why they went with Moore and not Clarke.

I think the general consensus was that because Clarke's body was so developed that his domination at U18 level wouldn't necessarily translate to AFL level - as GOALden Hawk's profile of him said - he was a man playing in a boys competition.

However, he's almost certain to be rookie listed by Sydney if he's not picked up in the pre-season draft.

The Swans are in the situation now that they can prelist Ed Clarke,Earl Shaw and Troy Bartlett as NSW rookies.Brisbane can do the same with the QLD boys like Hamill and McDonnell.

Only after the Pre-Season draft - these players are still available to all clubs in that draft.

That's the way I read it too.

I'd also suggest that the SCG is the ideal ground for the likes of Clarke and Moore because the game is a bit tighter and there is effectively no half-forward line. Centre-clearance specialists really help when you are one kick from goal.

The rookie concession to the Swans and particularly Brisbane is becoming more significant. There are some good kids coming through those states now.

Damn. This is what happened with Fixter, isn't it?
Given that Sydney got him anyway, did it matter?

IIRC Fixter was training pre-season with one of the SA clubs - the Crows I think - and the Swans probably thought they would nab him. This may have been before the Swans had their NSW rookie concessions and I think the Crows had a rookie pick before the Swans that year.

Fair point -I didn't know as much about Moore pre-draft as I did about Clarke - but the key point is, provided that Clarke doesn't get picked up in the PSD (and I don't think he will), then Sydney can automatically rookie list him - so this way they end up with both, which could not have happened if they chose Clarke instead of Moore
