Keeping Gunston and Breust has not prolonged the process of list regeneration

Paying overs for players coming in, and accepting unders for players leaving, has
What I said was “if the question was asked”, where was the plan B to get a bigger bite of the draft pie if the club knew where it was at?
asking the question admits concern.
not having a plan B or not forcing the issue is the problem.
In hindsight, the spin and the top up player dialog was nothing more than fluff to distract the issue that was coming full steam and head on.
Even if we had Gunston, Sicily and Day all up and running I would bet my left nut we would be in the same situation but with a better percentage.
Last season Covid papered over the cracks as an excuse. There is nowhere to hide this season and I’ll stick by the Breust re-signing as a flat put stuff up. It 100% didn’t need to be done in February.
now we are riding the bumps with a grin but nobody said we were to be riding a bike over those bumps without a seat on the pole.

Probably goes against the grain for Clarko but we really need to experiment with the structure and players in the midfield.
That's my fear with Clarko - that he's trying to mould our existing squad into one capable of playing the way our 3peat teams did, rather than crafting a new structure & style around their strengths.

Its not so much that he's old, its that he's been in the same job at the same workplace a really really long time. He's human, people need to freshen up with a change of scenery once in awhile or they go stale.

Hawthorn's future lies without Kennett & Clarko, the only debate is over timeframe. Both are well past their best, why put off the inevitable any longer?

Good point but with regards to Clarko, this may be all speculation. We won't know what is exactly happening, unless we are within the inner sanctum of the club.

it reminds a lot of us of the rebuild years in 2005-2007

The ability to tackle properly, pinning the arms etc and not allowing the release of the ball would be a great place to start for us moving forward.

Yeah our skills by hand and foot are bad, but our tackling is putrid. We allow so many oppo players to release the ball or fully break tackles.

Missing out on Lynch in free agency should have been the fork in the road for us really... instead we doubled down and here we are.
As if Lynch was ever going to come over. At that time, we were no longer a destination club for those seeking to win flags. And still won't be for at least another 2-3 years. Once this current list of younger players, combined with some high end drafts, reach 50-100 games, only then we'll be able to better gauge which direction we'll be heading. Right now some of the recent recruits like Chad, Frost, Philips, Hartigan are just list fillers while the rebuild happens.

Exactly, patience is required. This year we give games to Kosi, Jeka, Reeves, Brockman and hopefully DGB, Downie and maybe even Saunders. We've seen improvement in CJ and Scrimshaw. If we find 5 players this year, that is a massive outcome. Interesting watching the Box hill game, Saunders and Jeka amongst the best two teen rookie selections while some first round draft picks at the blues were struggling. First round draft picks aren't the total solution, yes we need elite talent but you don't trade out your culture. Carlton have some hits and some losses in their high end draft picks same with Melbourne, Toupas, Morton etc. The current AFL system suits teams trying to stay at the top so they're more attractive to free agents and trading in players. If you're at the bottom we need to nail most of our draft picks, create a great culture and then players will want to come on for the ride. Things can turn really quickly if there is the right culture in place.
