AFL Statement

The AFL this week made inquiries into an incident involving North Melbourne Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson during Saturday afternoon’s match in Hobart.

The AFL was made aware of the alleged comments by a match day official post-game who heard the comments, with the AFLIU following up the report.

Clarkson has admitted to loudly swearing and using inappropriate language while standing near the umpires and officials’ bench in response to an umpiring decision during the third quarter.

After talking to match officials, the AFL was not able to be comfortably satisfied that Clarkson’s swearing was directed towards a specific person or persons and in particular an AFL match official or officials and as such no finding of a breach of AFL Rules has been made.

I’m sick of the umpire whinging. Surely there’s more fun in footy than just nitpicking slow mo replays from a million different angles to see whether there was a touch, a mild slip of the shoulders etc.

People don’t even care about the game, they just instantly whinge about every decision. Even decisions that are correct. The Rankine one was a perfect example - clearly correct, ran a mile, and the footy world was in meltdown because the umpires are now not meant to pay the right decision, they have to interpret whether the time is right in the game to pay it. And because other umpires have let a 17m run go unchecked, THIS ONE should let a 24m run go!

I would love a player basic skill error montage to go up against an obvious umpire error montage (not just a 50/50 subjective grey area disagreement, but one where say a player threw the ball or got taken high right in front of the umpire unobstructed view). Players skill error would go for ages longer. A highly paid gun like Tom Lynch for example I can remember has missed some shots from 10m out. That’s way more impactful to the game outcome.

Clarko can’t even set a defensive game plan that means the opposition doesn’t walk through a training drill on attack. He can’t protect the corridor. And he wants to whinge about umpires? GTFO. Have a 2 week rest & come up with a defensive plan.

Where he’s a fool is he trusts people to play the same game - have it out and move on - trouble is there’s a new Sherriff in town, the arch campaigner…the one that thinks rope-a-dope is clever, manly, smart.
