The most horrifying thing about that story was that an Aboriginal player's partner was pressured to have an abortion, and he was coerced into cutting her off. I know a lot of people see Leigh Matthews as the GOAT, but in my opinion, Peter Hudson was the greatest Hawk ever. The only person I've ever seen who was consistently unbeatable. Kept goalless only 4 times in a very long career, and having an average of over 5 goals per game. Hawthorn have had many great players, but among those I've seen, Peter Hudson's record stands alone. Best goal average in the history of the game. And I'm writing that as someone who had a big tribute to Tony Lockett in my room. (Some called it a shrine, but I personally didn't think it went that far). I would never say Cyril Rioli was in that class.

I'm with you on Peter Hudson. I'm a 69yo South Melb/Swans fan and declared Hudson the best player I had seen until along came Gary Ablett Snr. I remember one day at Glenferrie Oval, my father and I stood behind the away goals, it was wet & muddy. I told my Dad thank goodness it's wet as it will restrict Hudson. We had John Rantall playing on him (one of the best ever undersized defenders). That day, Hudson kicked 13 goals. The following year in 1970 (we made the final four that year), our next game against Hawthorn? Hudson follows it up with another 13! People may say that he had some good players delivering it to him. Nope. Kennedy's instructions were to clear every forward out and leave Hudson one on one and to just kick it long. The VFL introduced the diamond (not centre square) to help discourage teams from crowding the backline, instigated primarily to beat Kennedy's game plan. Years later people would call it 'Pagan's Paddock' when a guy named Carey surfaced.

I agree - I only saw Hudson once, in 72 representing Tassie in the ANFC vs SA in SA. I went with a mate who later played for Sturt U19s. I told him him ‘this guy Hudson was something special’

SA walloped them but there was one genuine chance he had where he beat Greg Phillips (Erin’s dad) to the ball and walked around him like he was standing still.

My mate’s jaw just dropped, I laughed.

Came out on one leg and ran rings around SA’s Hall of Fame Full Back.

My 2nd would be Matthews just for consistency, flexibility and resilience.

I always say - who did they play on?

Hudson - Southby, Lofts, Barry Davis, Kevin Murray, Dench , Bourke, John Rantall etc.

Matthews - As a fwd pocket - Barry Davis, Allan Davis and an array of ‘switch hitters’ who were poorly matched - Newman, Frank Dempsey, John Schulz and even Len Thompson.

So what is clear is there were few sound match ups for Matthews, making him tough to beat - that was his best weapon.
